Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse

This evening marks the beginning of our busy autumn period and, as the nights are drawing in, this is also our first floodlit fixture. The weather is forecast to be kind to us, so we look forward to being able to enjoy our nine-race card, for most of the evening, in the late summer sunshine.

The evening kicks off with the Fegentri World Championship Handicap, in which gentlemen riders from twenty five different countries are eligible to ride; this race has a truly international contingent competing with riders from Ireland, Czech Republic, France, Italy and Spain as well as two from Great Britain doing battle tonight.

Winners will be hard to find tonight with ninety five horses declared but I wish you the best of luck in finding a winner or two.

Have a lovely evening.

Timeform Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CITY SELECTIONS

THE BAY WARRIOR recorded a comfortable success at Southwell earlier this month and subsequent 4lb rise looks fair Mark Usher’s charge, a multiple winner over C&D, will not want to be slowly away as can sometimes be the case but, if breaking on terms, he can go in again. Silver Nightfall was narrowly denied over a mile at Lingfield on Saturday and has every chance of gaining compensation, while Platinum Prince appeals most of the remainder

Leading course trainer (19-24): E Dunlop (26 wins from 221 runners, 12%) runs LENNY’S SPIRIT

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): J Owen (5 wins from 32 runners, 16%) runs LASER FOCUS

Weightwatcher: SILVER NIGHTFALL won off a handicap mark of 73, her rating is now down 6lb to 67. Longest Traveller: THE BAY WARRIOR trained by M Usher, Lambourn, 128 miles.

CITY SELECTIONS

Lion Ring made most when successful at Lingfield recently and he merits respect under a penalty, but a chance is taken on SANKARI. Recent form figures wouldn’t suggest he is a winner in waiting, but his handicap mark is reflective of that. The son of Ribchester drops in both trip and grade, with newly-applied cheekpieces. He is completely unexposed on the surface and should the headgear have a positive effect, he might represent some value. Thismydream is also noted.

CITY SELECTIONS

There has been no stopping KINETIC of late and she arrives having completed her hat-trick at Musselburgh. James Owen’s filly has been raised a further 4lb but given that she has scope for further progress at this longer trip, it would come as no surprise were she to defy it. Standbackandlook was unable to pick up off a steady pace at Nottingham but he remains in good heart and is an obvious candidate. Delta Legend’s latest efforts would suggest a step up in distance will suit.

DECLARED RUNNERS 7 2023: NO CORRESPONDING RACE

Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No. 1, 6.

Stewards Note:

LE ROUGE CHINOIS: Following its run on 29/8/2024 it was reported that the horse was restless in the stalls.

Probable S.P’s: 11-8 Saint Riquier (FR), 9-2 Kinetic (IRE), 13-2 Beautiful Crown (GB), 7-1 Standbackandlook (GB), 8-1 Le Rouge Chinois (DEN), 16-1 Delta Legend (IRE), 22-1 Manu Et Corde (IRE)

SAINT RIQUIER (due to be 10lb higher in future) didn’t find things panning out ideally when runner-up in his hat-trick bid at Brighton 2 days ago, yet wisely turned out quickly, he’s well worthy of another chance to get back to winning ways. Standbackandlook and Kinetic, who has thrived since joining James Owen, head the dangers.

BLUE COLLAR LAD was only beaten a head into second over 7f at Lingfield a couple of weeks ago and the five-year-old merits the utmost respect on the back of that effort, despite a 2lb rise. Q Twenty Boy has not been disgraced on either start since winning over 5f here in mid-August and he should not be discounted, while Lewis Barnes and Poetic Jack are also noted.

LEWIS BARNES produced one of his better efforts for his current yard when runner-up at this course on his penultimate start, so with blinkers applied he is taken to leave his latest run behind having eased further in the weights. CUT TO THE CHASE remains unexposed and made the frame when third on his handicap bow at Brighton. With that in mind, he just gets the vote off a 1lb lower mark ahead of Doves Of Peace, who hit the crossbar in a classified event at Lingfield last time. Comedian Leader is another with valid form claims, while Irrelevant is the pick of the remainder.

MASTER DANDY responded well for Jack Doughty when landing an apprentices’ race over 6f at Lingfield last week and, given he is 3lb well-in after that first handicap success, it should pay to stick with the James Fanshawe-trained gelding, with the longer trip a potential source of further progression. Thapa VC and All Agleam have been holding their form well and have solid chances, while The Waiting Game is dangerous to underestimate.

CITY SELECTIONS

SAIGON DREAM progressed from his debut run when a close second to an 80-rated rival at Kempton last month and, with further improvement likely now he steps up to a mile, this is well within reach for the son of Oasis Dream at this stage. Mr Grimes (second) finished a length in front of Mauchline (fifth) in a Lingfield maiden a fortnight ago and can give the selection some food for thought with a step forward.

A big run was obviously expected from FOREVER PROUD when a well-supported favourite on her debut for James Owen at Lingfield last week and although she came up just short, that third-placed finish was an encouraging enough effort to give her another chance as she turns out quickly from the same mark. H Key Lails is effective on Polytrack and is feared most from a handy rating. Takes Time and Heerathetrack are other notable contenders.
