Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse

Our feature race today is the Weatherbys Chelmsford City Cup, which, with £40,000 in prize money on offer, has attracted five useful performers including Alaskan Gold, who has been running well in Group company. For me, Fair Point looks an attractive proposition, as she ran well at Ascot last time out when not looking to stay a mile and I feel that the drop back to 7f could suit her well. We thank Weatherbys for their generous sponsorship of this race.

This evening, we welcome the Injured Jockeys Fund, who will be in the Grandstand as part of their 60th anniversary celebrations. This charity does fantastic work for the jockeys, so please support them if you feel able.

Also, we are delighted to have Racing TV Club members, as our guests, to enjoy a ‘Club Day’ in a private area as part of their membership.

Have a lovely evening.

Timeform Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CITY SELECTIONS

PATH TO GLORY shaped with plenty of promise when runner-up on her first outing at Ripon. She didn’t quite build on that effort when backed up relatively quickly at Nottingham just 11 days later, but the daughter of Masar may not have got home over 1m2f and the drop in trip could hold the key to her improvement. Fibonacci Sequence is capable of stepping forward after her fourth at Wolverhampton, while the sixth from that contest, Anamika, is another to note.

CITY SELECTIONS

MENG TIAN won off this mark at Wolverhampton in April and the five-year-old took a step back in the right direction when third at Lingfield on his latest start. Although he hasn’t won here yet, Sean Woods’ gelding has acquitted himself well in defeat on a number of occasions and this appears to be a suitable opportunity for him to strike. Covert Mission is respected based on his third at Kempton two starts ago along with Got No Dollars, who should prove happier back on an artificial surface.

CITY SELECTIONS

Alaskan Gold has to be of interest on his first start for Alan King, having placed in Listed company at Doncaster as a juvenile. The son of Kodiac, who was last seen finishing fourth to Commonwealth Cup hero Inisherin at Haydock, should appreciate the drop in grade, but may find NEVER SO BRAVE too strong for him. Sixth in the Jersey at Royal Ascot, things didn’t go to plan subsequently at Chester and he is well worth another chance on this occasion. Fair Point completes the shortlist.

DUBAWI TIME has finished runner-up on both starts since joining the William Knight yard and, with the promise of more to come, the lightly-raced three-year-old can go one better over this longer trip. Wannabe Brave is a three-time winner on the all-weather this year and look the chief danger, although the Sir Mark Prescott-trained Apostle remains unexposed and also merits a place on the shortlist.

Seemingly freshened up by a break, DOVES OF PEACE ran on strongly to land a similar event here 16 days ago and is an attractive proposition once again.
