Timeform Rating
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

A distinctly weak event in which the straightforward option is to side with recent Yarmouth winner BATTLEOFBALTIMORE. Lewis Barnes could dispel a poor run last time, so he’s on the shortlist and Colors of Freedom can get involved if she’s able to back up a solid showing at Southwell 2 weeks ago.

The form of Gilet’s Southwell second received a timely boost when the third came out to win at Hamilton on Tuesday evening and he must be respected with that in mind, but it is FIRE FLAME who gets the verdict. The son of Wootton Bassett was picked up for 200,000gns at the sales last October before showing clear promise on his debut at Ascot last month. Rogue Invader is also noted.

This can go the way of STANLEY SPENCER, who performed with credit at Wolverhampton last time out and a drop in grade is likely to suit, having scored at Kempton on his penultimate outing. A comfortable winner over 5f at Musselburgh, Union Island can give him the most to think about following his breakthrough success at Musselburgh, as well as Scarboroughwarning, who may have finished closer but for racing keenly over C&D when last seen in January.

It was a stronger race than this in which HORSE WHISPERER trailed in last of nine at Ascot last time and she is of strong interest back down in grade here The form of her Ffos Las success on penultimate start looks pretty decent (the second again went close at Lingfield on Saturday and the third has won since) and she remains on a workable mark. Stanley Spencer is next on the list ahead of Union Island and handicap debutante Scarboroughwarning.

UNDER SIEGE never recovered from a slow start when failing to land the odds at Windsor, but it’s difficult to ignore his debut second to subsequent Dante winner Economics back in April and he merits another chance on that form. The four-year-old Lordsbridge Blu steps up in distance after a decent debut fourth over 7f at Yarmouth and may prove a solid threat, while others for the shortlist include Calanthe and Shimmering Spin.

Gaiety Musical finished runner-up over 7f here on her penultimate start and can have a say in proceedings if staying this extra furlong. However, URBAN LION is less exposed and with improvement expected, having been gelded since running green at Newmarket on his introduction, the son of Zoustar gets a tentative vote with Jack Channon’s yard in such good form. North Summit and Blue Sky Boy are newcomers to keep an eye on.

URBAN LION shaped with encouragement in a much better race than this at Newmarket first time out and he’s likely to improve past Gaiety Musical, who needs to bounce back from a lesser effort. Breathless Spirit also has the scope to improve from his debut but he didn’t achieve as much as the selection first time out.

Cuban Harry holds sound claims on his recent Wolverhampton fourth. Ed Dunlop’s charge will have to break alertly to negotiate his wide draw though and, with that in mind, preference is for GREGORIANNA. Her latest performance was perhaps the most promising so far and she may well build on that now sent handicapping over the mile. Soveraine might prove best of the remainder having hit the frame twice in recent weeks.

It could be worth siding with SOVERAINE, who promises to be suited by this drop back in trip after finding 9.2f too stiff a test at Hamilton recently She still performed with credit to finish third in that handicap, despite sporting first-time headgear, and gets the nod ahead of Cuban Harry and Theworldsnotenough. It will be interesting to see if support arrives for handicap debutante Gregorianna and she is also worth a second look.

Lightning Bay went close at Wolverhampton last time out and he could make it 13th time lucky from 1lb higher, but a chance can be taken on DROUTHY NEEBOR. Hughie Morrison’s gelding didn’t show much in three novice events at Windsor, but he appeals as a likely improver now upped in trip, especially based on his full-brother Supamouse, who was a smart bumper winner for the stable. Idyllic is also noted.

Probable S.P’s: 11-4 Lightning Bay (GB), 7-2 Idyllic (GB), 11-2 Drouthy Neebor (GB), 8-1 Jolty Jem (IRE), 10-1 Old Grey Whistle (IRE), 12-1 Stretch (GB), Indian Romance (IRE), 50-1 Peter Piper (GB), 66-1 Leon Trotsky (GB)
DROUTHY NEEBOR has failed to shine in a trio of Windsor novice events over a mile but he has the look of a potential improver now faced with a stiffer test and pitched into a handicap. Next on the list is Lightning Bay, who put in a good shift at Wolverhampton last time. Idyllic and Old Grey Whistle both make each-way appeal.
