Morning Racing
Saturday 13th April 2024

Saturday 13th April 2024
We are proud to be staging the first morning fixture in British racing today with the first race at 10.00 am. Today, for many people in Great Britain and even around the world, is Grand National day and we look forward to being a fitting precursor to this race of legends, such as Red Rum and Aldaniti.
The seven-race card kicks off with some beautifully bred fillies in the ten furlong maiden, in which Godolphin’s Galileo filly, Winter Snowfall, sets the standard but the Niarchos family’s Everywhere is a fascinating newcomer, being a granddaughter of the mighty Miesque. For those of you, who don’t remember Miesque, she won both the French and English 1000 Guineas, she was a dual winner of the Breeders’ Cup Mile and during her magnificent career, she was a multiple Group 1 winner at two, three and four years of age.
I remember her with particular affection, as I was fortunate enough to ‘pony’ her before she won the 1987 Breeders’ Cup Mile at Hollywood Park in California; she was a beautiful and, as is often the case the case with fillies of this calibre, feisty racemare. I look forward to inspecting her granddaughter
Have a great day.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Danielle is closely related to Ascot Gold Cup winner Courage Mon Ami, so it would be no surprise to see her leave her Southwell debut effort behind, but she was soundly beaten in third over 7f that day and preference is for WINTER SNOWFALL. Charlie Appleby’s filly was only held by half a length over 1m3f at Kempton on her recent introduction and shaped as though she would benefit plenty from that experience. Sir Michael Stoute doesn’t have too many runners here and his Everywhere is the most interesting of the newcomers.

2023: NO CORRESPONDING RACE LAST YEAR
DANIELLE: Following its run on 12/12/2023 it was reported that the horse was slowly away
Probable S.P’s: 2-1 Danielle (GB), 6-1 Everywhere (IRE), 10-11 Winter Snowfall (GB), 12-1 Sea Stream (IRE), 33-1 Moonsilver (GB), 50-1 Sweet Painted Lady (IRE)
An interesting clash between 2 highly promising fillies, with preference just for DANIELLE, who was clearly learning on the job at Southwell before Christmas and looks capable of much better with that experience under her belt. The similarly well-bred Winter Snowfall showed plenty to like on her debut last week and is another who could make up into a smart performer, so rates a serious threat to the selection. Sir Michael Stoute’s newcomer Everywhere can take third.
The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.
No dogs are allowed anywhere on the racecourse, with the exception of Assistance Dogs.

Malacanne ran well in defeat latest and is a recent Wolverhampton winner. However, preference is for AWTAAD PRINCE, who has remained in good heart since scoring off 2lb lower over C&D in February and he ran with credit to make the frame at Doncaster last time. The returning Oriental Art would be a player if picking up where he left off in the autumn.

The most experienced in the field, Pentacle has been threatening to score and should have a big say, but MISS SUNSET STRIP makes slightly more appeal after keeping on for the silver medal over 6f here second time out. BENAVENTE finished behind Cephalus at Lingfield last month but was caught further back than the winner and, with a beneficial draw in Stall 2, is taken to turn to the tables and end the winning streak of Gary Moore’s gelding. Cephalus has to be respected given the roll he arrives on, whilst Darkness went close on his return last year and looks on a handy mark.

MERRIJIG arrives here having won his last two starts and a 3lb rise for the most recent of those victories, which came over this course and distance, may not be enough to stop him from making it a hat-trick. Star Legend was a close third on that occasion and is an obvious threat to the selection once again, while Placated and Major Major also merit places on the shortlist.

A few in with a squeak but MERRIJIG is a progressive stayer and having returned from 6 months off with a really likeable effort on all-weather debut over C&D last month, John Berry’s lightly-raced 6-y-o gets the vote to complete the hat-trick at the expense of Star Legend, who was narrowly behind the selection in third last time. Placated and Buxted Too can do battle for minor honours.

Aces Wild justified favouritism in smooth fashion at Wolverhampton on his latest outing and he is seeking the hat-trick off a 4lb higher rating. However, the vote goes to THE DEFIANT, who outran his big odds when just being touched off by a neck into second at Lingfield last time. Luke Dace’s eight-year-old looks well placed to record his third C&D victory, while New Hope Bullet can fight it out for the minor honours. THE

Prince Ali has hit the frame on each of his last three outings, so he is likely to be on the premises once again. However, preference is for POWDERING, who struck by a length over 7f at Wolverhampton earlier in the month and a 5lb rise may prove to be lenient. With the step up in distance unlikely to pose her many problems, she looks the one to be with. Roscioli completes the shortlist.

PLAY SMARTER
Several in with a squeak in a big-field finale but the vote goes to LOCAL MUSIC, who is proving expensive to follow this year but it’s surely only matter of time before she opens her account. Second choice is Roscioli, who doubled his tally for current connections over C&D last time and he should be in the mix nudged up just 1lb. Powdering and Conquest of Power complete the shortlist.
TIMEFORM PREDICTION: 1.LOCAL MUSIC (IRE) 2.ROSCIOLI 3.POWDERING (IRE)
