Official Programme £3.50

Thursday 31st August 2023
Official Programme £3.50
We are racing today on one of our rare Thursday afternoon fixtures, rather than our more usual Thursday evening ones. We have a six-race card, all with good size fields and winners will be hard to find but we are looking forward to seeing some great finishes and really exciting racing.
We are racing again on Saturday evening, after which The Ministry of Sound Disco will take to the stage; this is the fourth time they have joined us here at the racecourse and they are always a big hit with the crowds, so do join us if you can for a fun evening on Saturday.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Emperor’s Star rates highly after a couple of respectable performances and needs taking seriously However, his costly Sandown defeat has taken a few subsequent knocks and he might be worth taking on with fellow Royal Lodge entrant ANNAFEL, who is from the family of a Dubai World Cup winner in Well Armed. The Gosdens’ newcomer cost 220,000gns and is bred to be effective on synthetics so can make an immediate impact. Desert Rhapsody is another notable debutant.

A fair bit of potential on show and the market should reveal plenty but Charlie Appleby’s EMPEROR’S STAR is worth siding with to bounce back from an odds-on reverse in the mud at Sandown and belatedly confirm the promise of his debut Newmarket second. Run Boy Run is feared most on the back of his own encouraging initial Newmarket second, although newcomers Annafel and Desert Rhapsody could have a say too.

As those with previous experience need to improve, well-bred newcomers Dire La Verite, a brother to a middle-distance winner in France, and RAQEEBB, whose dam is an unraced sister to a French Group 3-winning miler, appeal most on paper The latter is preferred as he debuts for a yard that has hit a sweet spot over the last fortnight. Lohengrin can progress upped in trip, and the same can be said for Velvet Crush.

CITY SELECTIONS
Brian Ellison fields a a couple with solid chances and while Ramiro has already enjoyed some success this campaign, the in-form NORTHERN SPIRIT could be the trainer’s best hope. The three-year-old is two from six on the all-weather so far and, assuming he handles the switch to Polytrack, he has a lot going for him, despite creeping up the handicap. Zaman Jemil and Knebworth are also considered.

Under Curfew was beaten just a neck into second at Chepstow last week and arrives 3lb well-in. The seven-year-old, who has been running consistently well of late, is likely to be competitive once again. Universal Grace (second) and Profitable Dawn (third) were closely matched here earlier in the month and command respect, but a chance is taken with LAERTES. UNDER CURFEW: Following its run on 24/8/2023 it was reported that the horse hung left-handed under pressure.
LAERTES: Following its run on 25/7/2023 it was reported that the horse suffered interference in running.
Probable S.P’s: 9-2 Under Curfew (GB), 6-1 Laertes (USA), 13-2 Boom The Groom (IRE), 9-1 Profitable Dawn (IRE), Universal Grace (GB), 10-1 Mintana (GB), 12-1 Next Second (GB), 16-1 Storm Melody (GB), Darlo Pride (GB), 20-1 Toplight (GB), 25-1 Reversion (IRE)
This looks wide open but LAERTES is taken to make a winning start for Mick Appleby having slipped in the weights and gain his breakthrough success, with Oisin Murphy in the saddle for the first time. Under Curfew is handily weighted and rates a big threat with recent Lingfield scorer Boom the Groom also highly respected along with C&D second Universal Grace.

THE GENTLEMEN’S DAY 30TH SEPTEMBER HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6)
DAISY ROOTS backed up her classified efforts when placed in handicap company at Kempton last week and Adam West’s filly is unexposed over this distance, having finished third on her only attempt at Brighton. Native Melody can be forgiven her latest run at Doncaster, when slipping on the home turn, and is better judged on her Lingfield success prior. Frankfreya was outpaced on his handicap bow at Wolverhampton, but the step up in trip is likely to aid his cause.

DAISY ROOTS has improved of late, opening her account at Ffos Las late last month prior to posting solid efforts in defeat at Brighton and Kempton. She is unexposed at this trip and looks the way to go with Oisin Murphy doing the steering. Next on the list is Twilight Jazz, who shouldn’t be judged too harshly on her latest effort and was in good form prior to that. Native Melody is best of the rest.
