Summer has been slow to arrive this year but there are, finally, signs that the weather is starting to warm up and tonight is forecast to be a lovely, sunny evening. We also have a bumper 8-race card for you with two fascinating two-year-old races to start the evening, then, what looks to be an extremely high-quality fillies’ novice race for the third race, followed by five competitive handicaps.
Our Club Restaurant is now open and fully operational after being completely refurbished, so should you wish to treat yourself to the very best cuisine that, we believe, you will find anywhere in Essex or, for that matter, any racecourse in Great Britain, please enquire at reception or visit our website for more details concerning how to book.
I hope you have a wonderful evening.
For more information about any of our upcoming events please visit chelmsfordcityracecourse. com or call the office on 01245 360300.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

This could go the way of GUNS AND FLOWERS, who makes her stable debut for Alice Haynes following a fair fourth at Dundalk when trained by Adrian Murray She left the impression there would be more to come up in trip and can get the better of the progressive Mistress Teite, who makes her all-weather debut following a creditable fourth at Windsor. Opera Forever sports a first-time hood following a game win at Newbury when last seen in October, but she has to shoulder a 7lb penalty for that success, so CHERRY shades the vote.
The daughter of Dubawi is related to several nice types, and her dam was Group 2-placed at Royal Ascot during her career. Red Danielle was only narrowly denied at Goodwood last month and also merits consideration.

MORE THAN A GREY, who swaps cheekpieces for first-time blinkers, appeals at this level and, reunited with Neil Callan, he could provide a bit of value in his bid for a breakthrough success. The handicapper has given the three-year-old every chance from a basement rating and, having acted well on the Polytrack at Kempton last time, the surface holds no fears. Old rival Captain Wentworth is also respected but the improving Inverinate might be more of a threat.

You Saw Brigadoon has done well since upped in trip after joining Stuart Williams and, having won over C&D last month, he is respected off just 3lb higher However, DABBOUS, who was just a neck away in second that day, looks a good bet to turn that form around on these revised terms. This does look a slightly deeper race and the likes of Kodiman and Flame Of Kodiac are also taken seriously

Kodiman, another low-mileage sort, shaped well at Wolverhampton recently and is feared, along with Dabbous and You Saw Brigadoon.

Savoy Brown exploited a good opportunity to win a classified stakes at Lingfield in March and is highly respected back in a handicap off a competitive mark. However, his two previous visits to this circuit yielded little in return and he may be worth taking on over this longer trip. The more proven stayer DAS KAPITAL is more appealing on these terms, especially with the in-form Oisin Murphy booked for the ride. Dereham is also considered.

Most of these arrive with a question mark against them so SAVOY BROWN is taken to follow up his cosy Lingfield success back in handicap company Prince Abu is weighted to have a big say if on his A-game, with Dereham another who enters calculations if, as expected, building on his reappearance Pontefract fifth.
The Weatherbys Digital Solutions Handicap, a Class 2 event over 1m2f, has attracted a strong field and looks to be an extremely competitive affair
Diderot is one of two previous course winners in the field, easily despatching the field in a Class 4 last term on his first start for trainer James Ferguson. He has rose significantly in the weights since then but backed up a second over course and distance with a win at Lingfield on his penultimate start. He struggled at York last time but this return to the AllWeather is sure to suit. The other course winner is Arthur’s Realm, a onemile winner here last April who also placed in a pair of strong handicaps at Thirsk and Doncaster. He has now dropped to just 1lb above his last winning mark following a string of midfield finishes this term.
Howth was only narrowly held when second over course and distance here in November despite being denied a clear run. He has been gelded since and is now 3lbs lower than he was that day, with Michael Appleby also enlisting the services of uber-talented apprentice Billy Loughnane Misty Dancer had that rival well behind on his last start at Newmarket when finishing a staying on second. The daughter of Dubawi landed a hattrick last term for Simon and Ed Crisford and still looks a progressive type Aussie Banker placed on his only run at Chelmsford, finishing third in a novice contest back in 2021. Richard Hughes’ gelding fired in a quickfire double to close 2022 under William Buick but must bounce back from a rare poor effort latest, now ridden by David Egan.
Groundbreaker kept top company last term for Andrew Balding, finishing a good fourth in the Golden Gates Stakes at Royal Ascot before a pair of top three finishes in Listed events. He made a satisfactory return when beaten just three lengths after a 237 day break and will likely be primed for a better effort with that under his belt. Sun King finished a length ahead of that rival in the Golden Gates Stakes, then trained at Ballydoyle, and is now 11lbs better off with that rival. He is now trained by the in-form George Boughey and makes just his second start on the All-Weather, this son of Galileo sitting on a tempting mark.
The Saeed Bin Suroor yard is in red-hot form at present, still flying high from their Classic success last month. White Wolf spent the winter in Dubai, just failing to land the spoils by a shorthead when sent favourite for a £50k handicap on his first start there. The Invincible Spirit gelding is two from three on the All-Weather here in the UK though and has been dropped 2lbs for his latest effort on the turf
Moktasaab ran a great race when fifth at York on his last start, with the fourth enhancing the form with a good effort at Epsom over the weekend. William Knight’s five-year-old makes his first start on the All-Weather for almost two years and has generously been dropped a pound for that York effort. Selwan was a three-time winner in France but must bounce back from his first start for new trainer Alan King when finishing last of all, now taking a significant drop down in trip to a distance which should be more suitable.
Joe Ballard Weatherbysfor four yrs old and upwards x Total prize fund £25000
Owners Prize Money 1st £10668, 2nd £5333, 3rd £2668, 4th £1333 (Penalty Value £13500)
Weights raised 6lb and paragraphs 27 to 31 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable.
In an open event, it might be worth taking a chance on SELWAN. A winner on the all-weather when trained in France, he made a low-key stable debut, finishing down the field at Goodwood 12 days ago, but is entitled to take a step forward. The lightly-raced son of Zelzal could be far more potent back on an artificial surface, while Groundbreaker continues to run well in defeat and is considered, along with Misty Dancer
