Afternoon Racing

Thursday 6th April 2023 Official Programme

Thursday 6th April 2023 Official Programme
Rather than our usual Thursday evening fixture, we look forward to a great afternoon of racing today with seven races on the card.
The novice race at 2.45pm has 12 interesting runners and, with fillies at this time of year, it would take a brave man to predict the winner. Throughout the rest of the afternoon, we have six handicaps to test your skills in finding a winner but I must draw your attention to The Bay Warrior, who runs in the 4.30 pm race This admirable horse has already won three times at Chelmsford and has been second twice here as well as winning in the last four months. He loves this racecourse and we shall be looking for another bold show today.
I hope you have a lovely afternoon and that we are able to ease you gently into this Easter weekend.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
You must be 18 or over to place a bet

SIMPLY GORGEOUS was beaten by a pair of subsequent winners when finishing third of four in a 0-70 handicap at Lingfield last month. Eased 1lb in the ratings and down in class, it might be worth taking a chance on Phil McEntee’s charge, whose sole success to date came over C&D.
Recent Wolverhampton scorer Eagle Eyed Freddie must feature prominently in calculations, along with Calin’s Lad, who has to carry a 4lb penalty for his win in selling company one week ago.
Leading course trainer (17-22): M Appleby (75 wins from 623 runners, 12%) runs EAGLE EYED FREDDIE

AMERICAN BELLE was no match for a progressive rival (now rated 101) when filling the runner-up spot over C&D in November but a similar performance could see her shed the maiden tag at the sixth time of asking. Archie Watson often excels in these types of contests and he boasts a strong hand with Concon Candy, who looks likely to improve on her debut third, and newcomer Hildegard. Any market support for her would be interesting.

Things appear to have clicked into place for LETMELIVEMYLIFE, who is 2-3 since joining the Sean Curran yard. He must saddle a 5lb penalty in a deeper race than those successes, but he’s less exposed than most and could yet have more to offer Barging Thru left it late to land a similar C&D event 26 days ago and a first-time visor could unlock further improvement. PLAY SMARTER
Sean Curran has very quickly found the key to LETMELIVEMYLIFE who is taken to make light of a 5lb penalty and complete a hat-trick. Secret Strength is more than capable off his current mark and is second choice ahead of Revolutionise.
Several hold chances including Winklevi, who is 1lb well-in and appeals on these terms, whereas Later Darling is respected under top-weight but has to prove his stamina over this new trip. Crescent Lake could also be a factor now he has had a couple of spins for his new yard. However, preference is for dual C&D winner MURHIB, who is still well handicapped despite a 3lb rise after a 2m success last time

WINKLEVI was back on song when second at Wolverhampton last week and might be able to land a second course win of the year. Veteran Murhib got his head back in front at Lingfield last month and is feared most ahead of Amanda Perrett’s Later Darling.
THE MINISTRY OF SOUND DISCO 2ND SEPTEMBER
THE BAY WARRIOR is holding his form well and having been nudged up just 2lb for winning over course and distance in a higher grade last time, he has a solid chance of following up. It’s notable that Rhys Clutterbuck was in the saddle for each of the gelding’s three previous career successes, all over C&D, and it would come as no surprise to see him do well again. Boasty is an obvious threat, while Mc’ted and Angels Roc are others to note.

Charlie Johnston is enjoying a good spell and the Middleham based trainer can strike again if SMOOTH RYDER enjoys a smoother passage than the one he endured during a near miss at Lingfield last month. He was a bit short of room at a crucial stage near the finish that day and from just a 1lb higher mark, he could make amends. Corporate Raider is tried in cheekpieces and could find improvement, while Chester Tonik remains unexposed over the trip.

The step up in trip could be just what the doctor ordered for STORMINGIN having shown plenty of stamina at the end of each of his last two races. A mark of 54 still looks within his grasp and he can see off the likes of Liva, who is now 4lb below his last winning mark, and Reset Button. He was a fine second last time and has since undergone wind surgery.
