Evening Racing

Thursday 16th March 2023

Thursday 16th March 2023
Tuesday afternoon at Cheltenham served as a timely reminder why I love this sport of horseracing so much. Constitution Hill’s complete dominance at every stage of the race was a joy to witness. He possesses all those qualities that great horses have: the ‘look of eagles’, the self-confidence bordering on arrogance, the athleticism that makes everything look so easy, the ‘cool dude’ temperament. In order to be recognised as one of the all-time greats, he will have to repeat that performance in the years to come to prove his durability but he may well be worthy of sitting amongst the pantheon of greats.
Just over half an hour later, we were treated to the heart-wrenching bravery of Honeysuckle winning the next race. This diminutive mare, already a two-time Champion Hurdle winner, has been a major part of Rachael Blackmore’s rise to the top ranks of National Hunt jockeys; she is also trained by the charming Henry de Bromhead, who, so tragically , lost his son, Jack, in a riding accident last year. The stories behind these three participants of horse, jockey and trainer have become so entwined that her victory was nothing short of a fairy tale.
I hope that we can bring you a small portion of that magic this evening.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

FLAME OF KODIAC didn’t see her race out on her Southwell comeback, but she was entitled to be a bit ring-rusty and gets the vote based on her encouraging debut effort in a Newmarket contest won by the high-class Mawj. Class Member didn’t really get the rub of the green at Wolverhampton, but is better drawn here and is a serious threat. Creme De Cacao was only just behind her at Dunstall Park when they made their introductions in January, while Heddewigii is an interesting newcomer

ZEALOT has improved again since stepping up to 1m2f, with a brace of wins at Newcastle since January, and Mick Appleby’s charge looks capable of shrugging off a further 6lb rise. Diderot has posted creditable efforts in defeat at Southwell and Lingfield and is an obvious contender He will need to settle better now returned to this trip so a bigger threat may emerge from Gloucestershire, who has been given a break since finishing fourth at Kempton in November

Hiatus was collared in the dying strides when runner-up at Kempton last week and he merits consideration now turned out quickly before going up 3lb. Preference, however, is for the lightly-raced MIDNIGHTATTHEOASIS, who had to settle for third when a warm order for his handicap debut at Southwell, but strikes as the type who has plenty more to offer. Last-time-out Lingfield winner Sassy Redhead has a career-high mark to overcome, but she can’t be dismissed lightly in her current form.

All five of the declared runners look to have some sort of chance, so DAWN VEGA receives what can only be a tentative vote. He looked to be getting to grips with the game towards the back end of last year and could improve significantly for a gelding operation. Get Stuck In has undergone the same procedure and warrants respect on his handicap debut, while Emily’s Eclipse is much better than she showed in Listed company at Salisbury when last seen.

Probable S.P’s: 11-4 Seductive Power (IRE), 10-3 Dawn Vega (GB), 4-1 Get Stuck In (IRE), 9-2 Emily’s Eclipse (GB), 6-1 Lady Marie (IRE)
PLAY SMARTER
The market should prove useful with most returning from absences, but DAWN VEGA shaped better than the distance beaten suggests when last seen at Newmarket in October and could be the way to go from a 1lb higher mark. Seductive Power, another likely improver stepping up to 1m, is feared most ahead of Get Stuck In.
The racecourse would like to thank our sponsors, their support sustains our sport.

CITY SELECTIONS
Angle Land wasn’t far off completing the hat-trick at Southwell last week and another bold bid beckons, but DALBY FOREST shades the verdict off his light weight. He beat the former’s conqueror two starts ago, over this C&D, and lost little in defeat when bidding to complete the double at Southwell last time. Alafdhal is 1lb lower than when a close-up third at Lingfield and must also enter calculations.
Leading course trainer (17-22): D M Simcock (47 wins from 294 runners, 16%) runs DALBY FOREST
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): T Carroll (5 wins from 54 runners, 9%) runs BEZZAS LAD
Weightwatcher: SAAHEQ won off a handicap mark of 76, his rating is now down 10lb to 66.
Longest Traveller: SAAHEQ trained by Adrian Nicholls, Sessay, 213 miles.
