Race Conditions

Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse for one of our regular Thursday evening fixtures. We have a 7-race card for you tonight, which includes five handicaps, a classified stakes and a novice stakes. For those of you, who may be mystified by these race types, the rationale behind the handicap race is, as follows:

In order to run in a handicap, a horse has to have run a minimum number of times, usually three, before he will be allocated a handicap rating by the BHA handicapper, which will determine the weight that he carries. Every horse is re-assessed after every race in an attempt to give each horse an equal chance of winning, which is, obviously, a tall order Therefore, the better a horse runs, the more weight he will carry next time and vice-versa. As a very broad rule of thumb, 2lbs is deemed to equate to a length, so, for every 2lbs extra that a horse has to carry, it is believed it will slow him down by a length.

I hope you have a lovely evening.
