Evening Racing

Saturday 25th February 2023

Saturday 25th February 2023
On this rather chilly Saturday evening, we have a fascinating seven race card that promises to warm up your ‘little grey cells’ in the effort to find some winners. The evening is book-ended by three maidens – two to begin the evening and one to end it - for which a paddock inspection is a must to evaluate their physical progress over the winter There are some particularly well-bred individuals in the last race with middle-distance pedigrees that are likely to show considerable improvement as they are stepped up in trip.
In the 6.10 pm race, Kensington Agent has been in great form this year and may still be ahead of the handicapper but it looks an open race with all of them appearing to have a chance. Then, in the 6.40 pm race, we have Sir Rodneyredblood running back at his favourite racecourse. This splendid six year old has won, I believe, five of his eleven races here at Chelmsford Racecourse and, obviously, loves the track. He has a good draw, from stall 2, and I would be looking for a bold show from him tonight.
I hope you have a lovely evening and manage to find a winner or two

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

THE CCR RESTRICTED MAIDEN STAKES (CLASS 5) (for horses in Band D) (GBB RACE)
Magnusson, who is a full-brother to 7f Listed winner Aldaary, appeals most of the three newcomers and is one to monitor closely in the betting market. However, SEA THE BUCKTHORN ran well in defeat in a novice stakes contest at Southwell last month and created the impression that the return to this trip should suit. Woodstock has shown ability and is respected as a likely improver, while Margaret’s Fuchsia can also figure prominently

This is best left to WOODSTOCK, who attracted support ahead of his promising debut second at Southwell recently and will be more street-wise this time. Newcomer Magnusson is one to note in the betting and is put forward as the suggestion for forecast purposes ahead of stablemate Sea The Buckthorn and Scramble.

Halic scored comfortably on his handicap bow over 1m4f at Lingfield last month when trained by Owen Burrows and must enter calculations on his stable bow for Robert Eddery. However, BIT HARSH arrives on a four-timer and shades the vote, especially given Pierre-Louis Jamin’s claim negates most of the gelding’s 5lb rise for his recent success . Captain Kane reverts back to the Flat following a disappointing spin over timber and completes the shortlist.

BIT HARSH has thrived this winter back on all-weather with cheekpieces applied, completing a hat-trick of handicap wins with success at Wolverhampton, and the 4-y-o can extend his winning run in his current mood. Halic made a winning handicap debut last time and is respected on his first run for a new yard, with Red Flyer completing the shortlist.

Now that the penny has dropped for SAUSALITO, who recorded a convincing win over C&D last time, there should be plenty more to come from the four-year-old as he looks to follow up for his in-form trainer There was just over a length separating Red Evelyn (first) and Crazy Spin (second) when they met here last week and both are likely to be thereabouts again.

There wasn’t much between stablemates Mountain Song (second) and ETERNAL HOPE (third) when they met at Wolverhampton recently and it is the latter who is taken to come out on top this evening. The daughter of Teofilo was making her debut on that occasion and is therefore open to more improvement, especially over an extra half-furlong. Glowing Sky shaped with promise on her only start to date at Newmarket last October and is likely to be thereabouts.

Probable S.P’s: 13-8 Mountain Song (IRE), 7-4 Eternal Hope (IRE), 11-2 Glowing Sky (IRE), 14-1 Midsummer Dance (USA), 25-1 Afloat (GB), 40-1 Grand Duchess Olga (GB), 150-1 Kalama Sunrise (GB)
ETERNAL HOPE wasn’t knocked about on her recent introduction at Wolverhampton where she finished hot on the heels of stablemate Mountain Song, who had the benefit of prior experience. It should again be close between them but Eternal Hope arguably possesses the greater potential and is taken to emerge on top this time. Glowing Sky looks the pick of the Gosden-trained duo and is best of the rest.
