Evening Racing

Official Programme £3.00

Welcome Back, Oisin

This evening, we are delighted to welcome back Oisin Murphy to race riding. His brilliance in the saddle has been lighting up racecourses since he was crowned champion apprentice in 2014. Recognition quickly followed when, in 2016, he was appointed first jockey to the powerful Qatar Racing; then, in 2017, he rode his first Group 1 winner aboard Aclaim in the Prix de la Foret. His association with such great horses as Kameko, on whom he won the 2000 Guineas; Alcohol Free, winning the Cheveley Park Stakes, the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Sussex Stakes; and Roaring Lion, winning the Eclipse Stakes, the Juddmonte International and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes took his career right to the top.

In 2019, he was crowned ‘champion jockey’ for the first time, before going on to take the title for the next two years. We have missed his style, panache and determination in the saddle and hope that tonight will be the first step to another champion jockey’s title in the not-too-distant future.

Good luck, Oisin!

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

TFRHHIII BHA-

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CITY SELECTIONS

Working on the theory that a change of scenery has perked his interest, BENEFICIARY is an interesting candidate for a race such as this and it would be no surprise to see him get off to a flyer for his new yard. The four-year-old is versatile regarding sprint trips and, after going close in first-time blinkers (retained) over 6f at Newcastle last month, dropping back to the minimum distance could prove ideal. Porfin and Frisky complete the shortlist.

STAKES (CLASS 5)

The first-time tongue-tie/cheekpieces combination could provide the missing link for MAGICAL MAX in his bid to end a winless drought that stretches back to July 2019 However, the six-year-old has posted several good efforts in defeat during that period and he is currently on a competitive mark. Bezzas Lad and Thismydream have both held their form well lately and are respected, while Autumn Flight is also dangerous to underestimate.

CITY SELECTIONS

Several hold solid chances here, but none appeal more than the well-handicapped GOT NO DOLLARS, who is set to race from 1lb lower than his last winning mark. While that succuss came over 6f, the Stuart Williams-trained gelding has won over this trip before and his proven effectiveness on this circuit is an added bonus. Politics and Gorak both arrive on the back of solid performances over this distance and are of interest, as is Boafo Boy

GORAK had failed to meet market expectations on stable debut but quickly put that behind him when runner-up to an unexposed sort in this headgear at Southwell last month and is taken to go one place better off the same mark. CLOSENESS came agonisingly close to breaking her duck in a similar event at Kempton 2 weeks ago and is fancied to make amends on what is only her third start for this yard. Forbearing lost out in a 3-way photo there 8 days ago so looks the obvious threat, while Vertical has a chance on these terms if dropping the bit.

HENRY THE FIFTH has been knocking on the door of late and this looks like as good an opportunity as any to regain the winning thread. The five-year-old is now 3lb lower than when scoring at Yarmouth last May and he may have too much for Bird For Life (second) and Reset Button (third), who were separated by less than a length at Southwell in December. Boundsy Boy and Global Wonder cannot be underestimated either

CITY SELECTIONS

THE BAY WARRIOR was narrowly denied in a 0-80 contest over C&D two weeks ago and Mark Usher’s charge is fancied to go one better in these calmer waters. Engrave has been in good form recently and, given that she remains well treated from a mark of 59, the daughter of Dark Angel needs to be taken seriously. Connections opt to fit a first-time eye-shield on Kardinya and if that can help him focus, he ought to be thereabouts.

THE BAY WARRIOR was edged out only late on over C&D 2 weeks ago and, for all he had an easy time of things up in front, it was still a career best and a reproduction of that form could be good enough to see him go one better here Engrave did well to stick in there for as long as she did over C&D last week having pulled hard early, so she’s respected, along with Pillars of Earth, who should be all the better for his reappearance.

It looks best to side with SICARIO, who arrives in search of his hat-trick having notched back-to-back successes at Wolverhampton and Southwell. Michael Appleby’s gelding must concede weight to all of his rivals, but that might not stop him. Sausalito failed to land a blow having been well supported on his return from an absence at Southwell two weeks ago, but a first-time visor could hold the key. Glencoe Boy is another to consider SICARIO Sausalito
