Evening Racing

This evening is the first of our four meetings in December and the beginning of the run-up to Christmas. If you want to celebrate Christmas in style, we are hosting three Illuminate Christmas Balls in the next few weeks, on Friday 9, Saturday 10 and Friday 16 December.
These will truly offer you an evening to remember with fine-dining, cocktail lounges, comedy acts and casino tables all in our fabulous winter-themed marquee. If you would like to know more, please visit our website or give us a ring.
Back to this evening, when we have nine races for you, during which we look forward to plenty of exciting finishes and competitive racing.
Tonight, you may see our stewards and other racecourse staff wearing a white ribbon, as we proudly support White Ribbon Day. This campaign strives for gender equality and zero tolerance of violence towards women.
Good luck with finding some winners and have a great evening.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Lethal Touch won with a bit in hand at Wolverhampton in October and must be respected, but this is more demanding. With that in mind, a chance is taken on handicap-debutant PURE MOTION, who should be ideally suited by this step up in trip having raced over 1m in her three qualifying runs. Asdaa is now 11lb below his last winning all-weather mark and must enter calculations, although he needs to prove himself over this far

CAPITAL THEORY sets the standard with an official rating of 77, and he ought to be difficult to beat returned to maiden company Charlie & Mark Johnston’s gelding will need to be at his best to repel the challenge of Mayfair Gold, who was narrowly denied over 1m at Kempton having been denied a clear run in the closing stages. In a competitive contest marginal preference goes to JILLY COOPER, who gave a good account when runner-up at this venue last time out. The consistent daughter of Lope De Vega dead-heated for victory on her penultimate outing and it would be no surprise if she recorded a fourth career victory in this contest. Granary Queen has been knocking on the door of late and rates the most immediate danger, while Dreams Of Thunder completes the shortlist.

Although ARAIFJAN failed to justify favouritism at this venue last time out, the five-year-old gave a good account when second behind a progressive filly and may mount a bold bid yet again. The Michael Herrington-trained gelding gets the nod, while it would be no surprise if Sense Of Security went close after finishing a gallant second at Kempton on her latest outing. Real Estate is capable on his day and is worthy of consideration.

EXPERT OPINION hasn’t been with Mick Appleby long and on the back of a more encouraging effort over C&D a fortnight ago, he looks the way to go from a handy stall. Reigning Profit landed a few bets at Wolverhampton and is a danger, along with La Roca del Fuego.
MISS BELLADONNA is worth chancing on her return from a break as she’s gone well fresh before now and has a previous C&D win to her name. A strong pace will ideally suit the selection and, along with the consistent Thakrah, she could be hard to repel in the closing stages. Embla and Man On A Mission are strong candidates for cutting out the running but they do look vulnerable to stronger finishers.

STORM MELODY drops in class on the back of a more encouraging effort when last seen and this veteran is certainly weighted to strike. Miss Belladonna can be a factor if fully fit for this return, with Spanish Angel a danger if scaling a revival.
MICHAELA’S BOY is hard to oppose given the manner of his success over this trip at Newcastle in October, and even the 8lb higher mark may not be enough to stop him from following up. Tephi has been tremendously consistent so far and again rates as a player, but she was also engaged to run at Kempton yesterday. Grace Angel is another with compelling claims after making all in first-time blinkers at Southwell last month and she is feared most with the headgear retained.

The drop back to the minimum trip was right up MICHAELA’S BOY’s street when he bolted up at Newcastle in October and having not been with Mick Appleby long, there could well be more to come. He’s fancied to follow up at the expense of Tephi, who just got going a fraction too late on handicap debut at Wolverhampton last month. Democracy Dilemma is another who should go well with the visor back on.
