Racing

We have a nine-race card for you this evening with 89 declared runners, which is greatly welcomed by us, as it allows Chelmsford City Racecourse to offer you a longer and, we hope, better experience during your visit.
Many of you may be wondering why we have nine races tonight, rather than our usual six or seven races. The answer is that the BHA will have been contacted by the horsemen, requesting that they put on an extra 6 furlong, 3 years old and upwards, maiden race. They, in turn, offered to us what is now the 4.30pm race tonight, which, unfortunately, has only attracted four runners; nevertheless, we are delighted to be hosting the race and supporting the horsemen.
The Fireworks Spectacular Sunday 6th November Handicap then attracted 21 declarations, which has allowed it to divide into two races with 11 and 10 runners respectively. We are not always permitted to divide our races, if they are fortunate to attract sufficient declarations, but, if they do, we are always delighted offer this opportunity to everyone.
I hope you have a wonderful evening.

Owner(s) Breeder Trainer Timeform Rating
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Mister X has improved since entering the handicap ranks and warrants respect following a solid win and placed efforts at Brighton and Kempton respectively However, MADE OF LIR has done it here, winning in comfortable fashion over C&D two starts ago, and she shades the verdict. The dropped-in-class Senor Pockets also brings winning course form to the table and is one to note, along with handicap debutant Albert Cee.

Compensation awaits MISTER X, who went into many a notebook when a staying-on third on all-weather debut at Kempton just over a fortnight ago. Provided he encounters a smooth trip, Stuart Williams’ charge looks one to keep firmly on side. Senor Pockets was unable to land a blow in a valuable sales event last time but he’s feared most back in this grade, ahead of Made of Lir and Sassy Redhead.

CLIPSHAM LA HABANA sets the standard with solid placed efforts at both Kempton and Wolverhampton and a repeat of either of those performances could well be good enough. Mindthegap wasn’t disgraced when fourth on debut at Kempton and he could improve enough to figure here, while Bluff, Yankee Spirit and Poetic Jack are all interesting newcomers. The betting market could prove the best guide to their chances.

Epic Express steps up in class having just been denied at this track on his most recent run, and can make his presence felt. Preference is for LEGENDE D’ART, who could benefit from a stiffer stamina test following a creditable fourth over 6f in September He was successful over this trip on his penultimate outing on turf and has claims if transferring that form to the all-weather, while Yoshimi also merits consideration.

SHADES OF SUMMER has filled the runner-up spot on all three career starts and looks set to shed her maiden tag stepping back up in trip for this outing. There has been no stopping ADMIRABLE LAD, who arrives seeking a fourth consecutive win following a comfortable victory at Wolverhampton in September A 2lb raised mark for his last win may not be enough to stop him. Starjik shed his maiden tag at the eighth time of asking last month and is a threat, while Viewfromthestars is another to note.

The majority of these arrive out of form and it rates a good opportunity for MIMOSET to gain a first win. The Rae Guest-trained inmate looked a different proposition in the first-time blinkers 16 days ago at Yarmouth and, off the same mark now reverting to the all-weather, the three-year-old could prove tough to beat. Steel Duchess may appreciate the return to this distance, with Real Estate making most appeal of the remainder

Howzak can’t be ruled out up another 3lb for his second successive victory, with last-time-out winner Thank The Lord also considered in his respective bid for further success. ANGLE LAND may gain a second win of the season. The three-year-old is due to go up 3lb in future races after being denied by a short head to the reopposing Ornate over C&D seven days ago. She enjoys a 4lb swing with that rival.

CITY SELECTIONS
BUGLE MAJOR arrives in good form after posting a creditable effort in defeat when second at Lingfield last week and could prove tough to beat off the same mark. Course winner Rhubarb Bikini may give the selection most to think about now returned to the all-weather, with Balgair lurking on a dangerous mark now 3lb below his C&D win last October. Mc’ted may fare best of the remainder if putting his latest disappointment behind him.

SMARTERHaving scored readily at Newcastle earlier in the month, BARENBOIM shaped best when beaten in a photo there on Tuesday, so he’s worth a chance to resume winning ways while still looking well in under a penalty.
