Afternoon Racing Thursday 8th September 2022 Official Programme £3.00

This evening is the first of our winter floodlit fixtures and, more significantly, our first fixture under the new LED lights. This marks the end of a rather fraught journey for us, from when some of the lights suffered damage during Storm Eunice last February to making the decision to change all the lights to LED. The size of the task cannot be underestimated, which involved taking down all the champagne flute lights, strengthening them and then replacing every light with the new LED lights. This commitment was not taken lightly but, apart from the energy-saving advantages of LED, we wanted a state-of-the-art lighting system. The other major consideration was the new turf course, as we are making plans to stage some trials and then our first races on the grass as soon as possible. You will be able to judge for yourselves this evening, but we feel that the new lighting system offers a rather magical quality to the experience of coming racing at Chelmsford City and we look forward to sharing that experience with you tonight. Have a great evening. Neil Graham Racing Director For more information about any of these events please visit chelmsfordcityracecourse.com or call the office on 01245 360300.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

Funny Story struggled in Listed company at Newbury last time, but she accounted for a useful rival on debut and it would be no surprise to see her bounce back on this occasion. That said, a chance can be taken with TURQUOISE DIAMOND, who lacks race experience but she is a half-sister to the Group 3 winner Perfect News and her dam won the Lowther. Centrefold is another with valid form claims, while Art Of Magic completes the shortlist. TURQUOISE DIAMOND Funny Story

However, a bigger threat may be posed by Centrefold, who is evidently well-regarded (Group 2 entry) and should come on for her encouraging debut at Newbury.

PHANTASY MAC keeps delivering the goods and while another personal best will be needed under a penalty here following her Wolverhampton success last week, she will probably be equal to the task. All Go got the job done when landing a Southwell novice recently and is likely to play a leading role now pitched into a handicap. Irresistable also has claims, along with Deep Sigh, who will be a threat if she gets a decent pace to aim at.

AGENT OF FORTUNE switches back to the all-weather following a good third over 1m 2f at Yarmouth last month. The seven-year-old kept on well during that contest and the fact she is unexposed as a stayer may see her step forward.
