Evening Racing Tuesday 9th August 2022
Official Programme £3.00
Welcome
Everyone at the racecourse has been working hard all summer, not only on our events, but also on our turf course. The incredibly hot and dry summer that we have been experiencing has meant that we have had to work extremely hard in order for the grass to thrive under these extreme conditions. As you can imagine, we would seriously welcome some rain, for the reason, as Henry Thoreau said: “A single, gentle rain makes the grass many shades greener.”
Wesley Ward galloped his horses on the grass before Royal Ascot and loved the way that it rode, saying that the horses really bounced off the turf. This has encouraged us to make plans to stage some races this autumn, which will be a first for British racing. No other course in Great Britain is able to stage turf racing under lights and we are delighted to be leading the way in this ground-breaking venture. As our plans progress, I shall keep you updated but, in the meantime, I hope you have a wonderful evening.
Neil Graham Racing Director

Timeform Rating
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CITY SELECTIONS COMEDIAN LEADER comes out as the likeliest winner, with the Gay Kelleway stable in among the winners recently. Only beaten a nose on her final start for Alice Haynes, she made her debut for new connections at Newmarket where she was hampered at the start before coming home a four-length last of eight. She has been dropped 2lb and looks ready to get off the mark. Menalippe has a chance if blinkers do the business, while Senor Pockets is also noted. COMEDIAN LEADER

All of these come with risks attached but MENALIPPE figures on a good mark so gets the nod in the hope the fitting of blinkers gets her back on track. Comedian Leader has less on her plate than on her nursery bow at Newmarket and rates the chief threat to James Ferguson’s daughter of Bungle Inthejungle.

CITY SELECTIONS David O’Meara has hit a rich vein of form lately and it may be worth chancing IMPERIAL KHAN. Still a maiden after six starts, he was beaten less than three lengths at Ripon off this mark earlier in the month and may do better if ridden with a little more restraint. Wrought Iron is an obvious danger with successes at Wolverhampton and Lingfield already this season, while Glasstrees deserves a win after some decent placed efforts. IMPERIAL KHAN

CITY SELECTIONS Dubai Immo wasn’t at his best when fourth at Yarmouth last month, but would be the one to beat here if he can repeat his length fourth at Nottingham in May. He wears a tongue-tie now and may find improvement, but it is interesting that Hollie Doyle rides the newcomer QUANTICO. The son of Make Believe is starting off at a sensible level and might make a winning debut. Good Measure was only beaten a length when third at Nottingham last month and is another to consider. PLAY SMARTER
MUST BE ROYALE opened his account in taking style here last month and with that form having been franked he’s weighted to follow up off just a 1lb higher mark with this longer trip likely to prove within his compass. Bristol Hill is feared most if, as expected, building on his Newcastle fifth after a wind op, with Sienna Breeze in the mix too if the fitting of blinkers ekes out some improvement.

CITY SELECTIONS BRUTE FORCE boasts a tremendous record at this venue and the Roger Teal-trained six-year-old gets the nod to record a second victory over C&D. The son of Paco Boy stayed on in determined fashion to get the better of Bayston Hill on his penultimate outing and he can repeat that feat. The latter must be respected, while Wendell’s Lass completes the shortlist. BRUTE FORCE

CITY SELECTIONS COMPANY MINX is one of two C&D winners in the field following last week’s smooth triumph at the Essex track in this grade. She is the joint top-rated horse in the field and it makes a lot of sense to stick with her while she’s clearly in good nick and has a 7lb claimer in the plate.
