Afternoon Racing Featuring Rio Fredrika Sunday 24th July 2022
Official Programme £3.00
Welcome We have a 7-race card for you this afternoon, featuring the £50,000 Betsi Handicap at 2:45 pm, which looks a highly competitive race with 12 runners. Chelmsford Racecourse has made the announcement this week that it is raising its prize money for all Class 5 handicaps to £10,000 and Class 6 handicaps to £8,000; we will also be running all our weight-for-age races in those two classes at the maximum permitted level by the BHA. We are constantly assessing our prize money levels as well as every aspect of the service we offer to our customers as part of our commitment to be the best we can be. Whether that is to the owners and trainers, that send their horses here, the stable staff who look after them, the jockeys or our customers on the racecourse, we strive to provide a top-class service. When we fall short, we apologise but we want Chelmsford to be a beacon racecourse and it is for that ideal that we strive. I hope you have a wonderful afternoon.

Timeform Rating
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CITY SELECTIONS ONE MORE OLLY was outclassed in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot, but she’d earned that tilt on the back of an impressive debut win over this C&D and a mark of 76 looks favourable on her nursery debut. A similar case could be made for Lingfield novice winner Lucy Lightfoot, who found Listed company too tough at York, while New Hope Bullet shouldn’t be ruled out after racing too freely at Ffos Las. CITY SELECTIONS As long as the market vibes aren’t negative, it is hard to look too far beyond Charlie Appleby’s newcomer APPOINTED ONE, who wouldn’t need to be one of the yard’s stronger juveniles to kick off with a win. The Bullion Bomber’s debut effort at Ascot two weeks ago seemed too bad to be true and he may be worth another chance given his $40,000 purchase price, while any market move for Miyagi would be interesting. With major doubts over Signcastle City’s participation (declared at Salisbury on Saturday), this looks ripe for a newcomer so APPOINTED ONE gets the tentative nod to strike at the first time of asking for leading trainer Charlie Appleby. Bernadine is worth a second look stepped upped in trip but the main dangers could be Miyagi and Matching Sox, who make plenty of paper appeal and can chase the selection home in that order.

CITY SELECTIONS TIME STEP displayed ability to win a Ffos Las maiden over 6f first time out and, though he has to shoulder a penalty here, there is enough in his pedigree to suggest he could go on to better things. Rogue Missile hasn’t been too far off in either start and remains of interest at this level, as does Masterclass, who ran well when second at Yarmouth before failing to get competitive from a high draw in a deep Kempton nursery latest. CITY SELECTIONS DUBAI STATION faced a stiff assignment in the Wokingham last month but, having won over C&D on his penultimate outing, the son of Brazen Beau could return to winning ways here. Emperor Spirit has been in fine fettle of late and must go on the shortlist, along with top-weight Misty Grey, who finished a good second in Listed company on his latest outing. PLAY SMARTER
FORD MADOX BROWN benefited from the return to 7f when third over C&D 3 weeks ago and he won’t need to step up much from that to open his account for Stuart Williams. Must Be Royale ran well on his only previous try on this surface, so he’s feared most, with Eternal Glory likely to make an impact if allowed to bowl along in front.
