Evening Racing with One Night of Queen Thursday 2nd June 2022

Official Programme £3.00

Welcome We have seven races for you this evening followed by One Night of Queen, when Gary Mullen will be rocking us to many of Queen’s greatest hits from Bohemian Rhapsody to Radio Ga Ga. Frankie Dettori is riding here this evening in the 7.40 and the 8.40 pm races, which is always a joy, as his riding and exuberance has brought so much pleasure to so many people over the years that we cherish every opportunity to see him ride. Sadly, we lost one of the heroes of our sport this week in Lester Piggott and we offer our condolences to his family. Lester was a hero to me and I shall never forget, in particular, the ride he gave to Royal Academy in the Breeders’ Cup when he returned to riding at the age of 54; he rode many of the great horses of all time from Sir Ivor to Nijinsky, he was champion jockey 11 times and won virtually every big race in Great Britain. I hope you have a lovely evening and manage to find some winners.

Timeform Rating

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CITY SELECTIONS LADY LAVINA displayed plenty of promise when finishing fourth on her debut at Ripon a week ago and she could be hard to beat with the benefit of that experience. Confederation has been running well in defeat of late and it would be no surprise to see him in the mix once again this evening. Mascapone was fourth in the Brocklesby on his debut in March and he has to be of some interest on his first start for these connections. LADY LAVINA

CITY SELECTIONS GLASSTREES bounced back to form when finishing second over 5f here on Saturday and she merits plenty of respect off the same mark this evening. PLAY SMARTER

There isn’t a previous winner here and TAHANI could be the one who breaks her duck today. She’s shown a fair bit in 3 quick runs, her performance at Redcar behind the recent listed Cecil Frail scorer Sense of Duty catching the eye, and she could be well treated off a mark of 57 on her first go on AW. CITY SELECTIONS A case can be made for all of these but marginal preference is for DUBAI HOPE, who was successful over 7f here last month and she should remain very competitive off just 2lb higher this evening. CITY SELECTIONS In this competitive contest marginal preference is for the lightly raced MARDOOF, who gave a good account at this venue when second last time. The son of Awtaad has only been handed a 1lb rise for that effort and may be able to shed the maiden tag in these calmer waters. Although Be Fair failed to justify favouritism on his latest outing, the six-year-old demands respect, while Typewritten is another to consider. MARDOOF

CITY SELECTIONS SPINAROUND ran well in testing conditions when second at Goodwood last time and it would be no surprise to see the son of Kodiac go one better returning to an artificial surface. The gelding has been given a 4lb rise to overcome and gets a tentative vote with Frankie Dettori in the saddle. Seattle King was last seen in Group 2 company as a juvenile and he merits plenty of consideration on handicap debut, while New Dimension also holds claims. SPINAROUND

CITY SELECTIONS LILA GIRL showed a willing attitude when getting off the mark over C&D last month and could prove hard to beat on her handicap debut. The Michael Bell-trained filly was a neck too good for Glory And Gold on that occasion and an opening mark of 71 looks more than fair. Vivency did well to win over C&D last time having suffered interference up the straight and has been given a 4lb rise since. Baileys Accolade had her first try over this trip at Doncaster last time and may be worth another shot for the stable that won this race last year. LILA GIRL
