Chelmsford City Racecard - Thursday 31st March

Page 1

The European Road To The Kentucky Derby Thursday 31st March 2022

Official Programme £3.00

Welcome It has been nearly six weeks since Storm Eunice hit the racecourse and caused significant damage to our beloved ‘champagne flute’ lights. The damage to these lights meant that it would not have been safe to have carried on racing, so, as you can see, we have taken them down and placed them on the ground. They will remain down, pending full repairs, before going back up during the summer in order for us to be ready for the autumn. We are delighted that we are able to welcome you back to Chelmsford City Racecourse this evening for a truly splendid eight-race card, featuring the £100,000 Woodford Reserve Cardinal Conditions Stakes. This one-mile Kentucky Derby Points qualifying race has six highly talented three year olds vying for this valuable prize with Blue Trail, Harrow and Find all seeking to do battle again after their closely fought finish at Kempton a few weeks ago. We will also be offering you American-themed food and bars this evening , as well as live music, after racing, from The Steve and Ben Somers Country Band. Have a great evening. Neil Graham Racing Director For more information about any of these events please visit www.chelmsfordcityracecourse.com or call the office on 01245 360300.

Timeform Rating

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

CITY SELECTIONS An eye-catcher on his first start for this yard at Wolverhampton recently, Irish import BOASTY appeals most as he looks to go one better off a mark 3lb higher. Runner-up on his last five outings, Blazer Two may well have to settle for minor honours again, whereas Lake Sand arrives here 2lb below his last winning mark. Completing the shortlist are Carmela Soprano, Catch My Breath and Fen Tiger. BOASTY

PLAY SMARTER

Plenty are in with a shout. BOASTY made a promising start for Ivan Furtado when runner-up at Wolverhampton last week and is weighted to go one better here. In-form Fen Tiger rates the chief threat, although Shadow Angel didn’t enjoy the best of runs at Lingfield and warrants plenty of respect too eased 1lb.

CITY SELECTIONS WRATH OF HECTOR may have produced a minor surprise to win at Southwell earlier in the month but the form of that race has worked out well since, and the booking of Silvestre De Sousa can only be a plus. Mashaan would hold strong claims if bouncing back to the form of his penultimate win at Lingfield, while Critical Thinking has been knocking on the door of late and is likely to be thereabouts once more. Tell’em Nowt and last year’s winner Last Date also warrant consideration. WRATH OF HECTOR

CITY SELECTIONS The last time LOVE POEMS attempted this distance she won quite comfortably over C&D and since then she has been outstayed over further. Returned to her optimum trip here, the daughter of Camelot can regain the winning thread at the main expense of the unexposed Second Kingdom, who is interesting on his handicap debut having run well the last twice over shorter. PLAY SMARTER

LOVE POEMS has quickly developed into a reliable performer, and having shaped well when runner-up at Lingfield earlier this month, she gets the verdict to go one better with first-time cheekpieces applied. Hackberry raced closer to the pace than ideal last time so he could provide the main threat back under a fully-fledged rider, with Dubai Emperor next on the list.

CITY SELECTIONS STORM ASSET will likely prove popular in this sprint handicap and rightly so, because he’s evidently on good terms with himself at present and should appreciate the drop in trip. He was beaten just a short head off this mark at Wolverhampton five days ago and is officially 2lb well-in. A close-up second at Lingfield last time, Reckon I’m Hot heads the list of dangers from Music Banner.

CITY SELECTIONS JUNGLE RUN is taken to outstay these rivals on his return to action. Entitled to have improved from two to three years, Tom Clover’s charge scored on his final outing as a juvenile at Wolverhampton over 7f, when sporting first-time blinkers (worn again today), and placed on his only previous visit to this track. CITY SELECTIONS HARROW sets the standard on official ratings and showed up well when only just denied by Blue Trail on his reappearance at Kempton earlier this month. Blue Trail again takes him on again here, but he had the benefit of recent races under his belt last time and perhaps Andrew Balding’s charge can improve enough to exact his revenge. Find was only a neck behind the aforementioned pair at Kempton and is likely to be in the mix if adopting the same pacesetting tactics, while Mr Professor had a couple of placed efforts in Dubai before flopping in a Listed contest at Saint Cloud and could go well in this grade. PLAY SMARTER

BLUE TRAIL did well to overcome a positional bias when finishing narrowly in front of a pair of re-opposing rivals at Kempton 4 weeks ago and, with potential for better still on the back of just 3 career starts, he earns the vote to come out on top again. The runner-up that day, Harrow, rates the chief threat, ahead of Mr Professor.

CITY SELECTIONS Cuban Breeze won here last month and has run well twice at Wolverhampton since, including another success there last time. He’s now 12lb higher than when successful at this track so EXPERT OPINION may prove better treated. A consistent sort at this track without getting his head in front this winter, Henry Spiller’s gelding could be the answer here. Atiyah wasn’t beaten that far at Southwell last time, while Dark Side Prince is consistent enough to have his say. EXPERT OPINION
