Chelmsford City Racecard - Thursday 3rd February

Page 1

Evening Racing Thursday 3rd February 2022

Official Programme £3.00

Welcome Welcome to Chelmsford city racecourse.

We have 7 races for you this evening, including our feature race, the £15,000 Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Handicap, over 5 furlongs. It is lovely to see so many old friends running at CCR tonight and it never ceases to amaze me, when I look through the card, how many horses return here to run time after time; in fact, one third of the horses running tonight have already won here. We also have a new big screen for you today between the weighing room and the saddling boxes, which, I hope, will help you to keep a closer eye on the races and increase your enjoyment when watching the racing. As we build towards our summer of racing and events at Chelmsford City Racecourse, you will see many new innovations but I am particularly excited to see our new Fairwood restaurant when it re-opens next Friday. Have a great evening. Neil Graham Racing Director

For more information about any of these events please visit www.chelmsfordcityracecourse.com or call the office on 01245 360300.

Timeform Rating

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CITY SELECTIONS The Stuart Williams bandwagon rolls on and the Newmarket handler looks to have a cracking chance here with SOYOUNIQUE. The five-year-old was always doing enough over 7f at Lingfield last week and, due to go up 4lb in the near future, he could take full advantage of being quickly turned out again. Eleven Eleven drops in both trip and class and should make his presence felt, while Bahia Star also merits consideration with Tom Marquand in the plate. Eleven Eleven

PLAY SMARTER

This can go the way of SOYOUNIQUE, who opened his account for Stuart Williams at Lingfield last week and being 4lb “well in” here, he looks the way to go. Bahia Star ran up to her best on all-weather debut/reappearance last month so she could provide the main danger if building on that effort, ahead of the Mick Appleby-trained pair Finery and Clipsham Tiger.

CITY SELECTIONS A big run from Soyounique in the opening race would boost the claims of SPLIT ELEVENS, who was only a neck behind that gelding over this trip at Lingfield last week. John Butler’s charge is proven here and he is 1lb well in this evening, so another bold bid beckons. Bobby On The Beat won a 0-70 handicap over 6f at Lingfield recently and he warrants respect now quickly turned out again under a 5lb penalty, while Trepidation also holds solid claims. CITY SELECTIONS Durdle Door justified strong market support when winning over this trip at Lingfield last time and he demands respect representing a stable in red-hot form, but preference is for the top-rated ZARZYNI. The five-year-old has posted two solid placed efforts since returning from a break, at this level and above, and he looks to have a big chance under Tom Marquand this evening. DURDLE DOOR gained her first handicap win with something to spare at Lingfield in December and, despite being up in grade, she’s well worth backing to follow up. Zarzyni, who fared best of those held up when second at Southwell a week ago, ranks as the main danger, although a steady pace could give Shallow Hal a realistic chance from a likely good tactical position.

CITY SELECTIONS : It was only half a length that separated Lihou (second) and LUCKY AVA (third) when they met over C&D last month, and the latter who is fancied to overturn that form courtesy of a 1lb pull at the weights. Martin Dwyer’s mount is winless since last August but has been running admirably of late without tasting victory. Dark Side Prince’s winning run came to an end at Wolverhampton, but he can certainly get involved here along with Marnie James, who has been runner-up on his last two starts. LUCKY AVA

BEN MACDUI: Following its run on 27/10/2021 it was reported that the horse was found to have bled. PLAY SMARTER

Plenty are in with a shout, so at the likely odds it’s worth siding with LIHOU who has dropped to a good mark and hinted that his turn is near when runner-up over C&D last month. Lucky Ava comes here in excellent nick so this C&D scorer rates a big threat along with Mick Appleby’s polytrack debutant Night On Earth.

CITY SELECTIONS : EM JAY KAY rates a confident selection following a highly-promising third on debut at Lingfield, with the first two home that day going on to fill the same two places since. The son of Brazen Beau has subsequently moved to the Phil McEntee stable and can provide another winner for the in-form Daniel Muscutt. Alia Choice ran to a similar level first time out at Newcastle in December and, granted normal improvement, she is likely to be thereabouts, along with the likes of Highest Ambition and Sherdil, who are far more exposed. ALIA CHOICE is out of a smart sprinter and showed a bit when fourth at Newcastle 44 days ago, so she’s a straightforward choice to open her account at the second attempt in a thin race. CITY SELECTIONS A case can be made for several but a chance is taken on SMOKEY MALONE, who was not disgraced when he put in a gallant effort to finish fourth over 1m4f at Southwell last month. The four-year-old gelding seems to save his best form for the all-weather and he should be suited by the return to this shorter trip. Bella Colorossa looks to be the main danger if building on his latest third at Kempton, while the hat-trick seeking Al Qaasim and Copake also make the shortlist. SMOKEY MALONE

PLAY SMARTER

CAPTAIN ST LUCIFER was a touch underwhelming last time but had scored cosily over C&D prior to that, so he’s worth a chance to resume winning ways in a decidedly weak contest. My Lady Clare, who had nothing to spare when scoring here in January, should pose a threat along with Roby Mill.
