Evening Racing Thursday 13th January 2022
Official Programme £3.00
Welcome Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse!
We have a 7-race card for you this evening with, as ever, some really competitive racing. Our feature race, The Betsi Handicap, has five runners, all of whom have run here before and either won or been placed but Hathlool looks the one to beat. In the previous race, The Racing Welfare Novice Stakes, Typewritten returns after his eye-catching second here a month ago and he warrants close attention on the back of that run. Looking forward to the summer, our exciting schedule of events is starting to take shape. On 16th June, we welcome the return of our ever-popular Ladies’ Day, offering everyone the chance to dress up and fall under the charm of a perfect day’s racing in the wonderful Essex countryside. Clockstock returns on 25th June and intends to deliver on its growing reputation as the best music festival around with music to suit all age groups and every musical taste. This is followed a month later, on 20th August, by The Ministry of Sound with their 15-piece band performing some of disco’s and house music’s greatest hits. We will have much more to offer you this summer and as soon as each act is confirmed, we will let you know. Have a wonderful evening. Neil Graham Racing Director

Timeform Rating
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CITY SELECTIONS HANNALITE was too keen for her own good when disappointing at Lingfield last time, but a return to the form that saw her place in her previous three outings, including once over this course and distance, could be enough to land this contest. Smart Qibli is the highest rated on official figures and could go well if granted an easy lead, while Cinzento hinted at a return to form when fifth over this trip at Southwell last time. HANNALITE

PLAY SMARTER
CINZENTO took this event 12 months ago and rates the pick at these weights too so gets the nod in a race where most have major question marks against them. Hannalite saw her run of good form come to an end when only eighth at Lingfield last week but can’t be ruled out here with Teemlucky another maiden who warrants respect after her solid Wolverhampton fourth.

CITY SELECTIONS OASIS IRLANDES looked a shade one-paced on his debut over 5f last week, but he is likely to be sharper for that experience and could relish the extra furlong here. Judy’s Park has earned a mark of 66 with some useful displays in her five starts to date, while Debit Card has a chance if producing her best form. However, the biggest danger could be newcomer Shin Saw Gyi, a 20,000gns purches who is out of a half-sister to a winner on the all-weather. OASIS IRLANDES

CITY SELECTIONS She Got The Look shaped as though a stiffer test of stamina would suit when staying on for third over an extended 9f at Wolverhampton last time, but she may have to give best to TYPEWRITTEN here. Andrew Balding’s filly took a step forward from her debut when second over this course and distance last time and could build on that performance. Opticality is interesting after a couple of solid efforts over a mile at Kempton, while Cerulean looked flattered by an official rating of 75 when struggling on his UK debut but could be capable of better in this. PLAY SMARTER
HATHLOOL wasted no time getting back on track when winning at Wolverhampton last week, having more in hand than the bare margin suggests, and remains one to keep on the right side of. Alhammaam probably did well under the circumstances given he raced close to the strong pace when runner-up here last week so rates the main threat.

CITY SELECTIONS A competitive event and Bella Colorossa has an excellent chance if taking up this engagement (also declared at Kempton yesterday), having shown improved form when winning easily at the Sunbury track on her debut for this stable last week. However, in the event that she sidesteps this race, DUBAI EMPEROR may prove to be the best option after shaping well when a close fifth at Wolverhampton last month. Captain St Lucifer landed a gamble over C&D last time and should prove competitive, while James Park Woods is another to note. DUBAI EMPEROR

PLAY SMARTER
It might be worth taking a chance on the lightly-raced DUBAI EMPEROR who made quite an encouraging return from a break at Wolverhampton on Boxing Day. Ivan Furtado has his team in good form so last month’s C&D scorer Captain St Lucifer rates a likely threat. Bella Colorossa could also be a major player depending on how she fares at Kempton on Wednesday.

CITY SELECTIONS Cases can be made for a few but preference goes to WHITTLE LE WOODS, who made a promising stable debut for Mick Appleby when staying on well to finish second at Newcastle earlier this month. The son of Lethal Force now steps up in trip and he can defy a 1lb rise for that latest effort. Porfin has been in terrific form but this appears to be a tougher assignment for him in this higher grade, while Full Intention and Legende D’art also make the shortlist. WHITTLE LE WOODS

PLAY SMARTER
This looks competitive despite only 7 runners. WHITTLE LE WOODS gets the nod on the back of an encouraging first run for this yard at Newcastle last week but Legende d’Art, who had winners behind him when scoring over C&D last time, and the thriving Porfin should ensure Mick Appleby’s charge doesn’t get things all his own way.

CITY SELECTIONS THE GAME OF LIFE caught the eye when making late headway to finish third in a low-grade handicap over this C&D earlier this month and he can build on that performance now dropping to this weaker grade. Trevie Fountain appears to be the chief threat to the selection after his latest second at Newcastle and he could be suited by the return to this shorter trip, while Laurentia is one to note for any market support as she tries first-time cheekpieces.
