Evening Racing SATURDAY 23RD OCTOBER 2021

Official Programme £3.00

Welcome SATURDAY NIGHT RACING AT CCR! Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse for a fabulous Saturday night under our unique floodlights. It has undoubtedly been a difficult time for all of us up and down the country and we’re delighted to be able to offer our guests some normality once again. It has been fantastic to see people really enjoying themselves here at CCR in recent months. Whilst we are lucky to have plenty of outdoor space here, we can all continue play our part in relation to the ongoing covid situation. As such, we would encourage you to continue with some good practices recommended at all racecourses as these can benefit you and fellow racegoers. Please wear a face mask at your discretion indoors in busier areas and continue to use the hand sanitisers available. The guidance around “hands, face, fresh air” remains important for us all. Thank you. The eight races this evening have attracted 80 runners, and they’ll all be looking to win a share of the £50,000+ prize money pot that’s on offer. The feature event on our card tonight is race five at 7.00pm - the £9,250 “CCR supporting Racing Staff Week Stakes” over six furlongs. Eight talented sprinters are in the line-up for this quality handicap and it should be a cracking race! Three of the field have won here before and that is often a very good pointer at CCR. So it’s one of those runners, Robert Eddery’s Eevilynn Drew, that could well land the spoils. He finished second here in a similar quality race nearly two years ago and his only other run at CCR was when winning a lower grade event over seven furlongs last month. This is his first run at 6 furlongs, but he can dictate the pace tonight and grab his second career win here. We hope you have a fantastic time with your friends and family this evening. Our next fixture is Thursday night, 28th October when we’ll hope to see you again for all the colour, fun and excitement of floodlit horseracing at Chelmsford City Racecourse. And remember – Christmas party season is nearly here, so be sure to book a great night out at one of our weekend parties throughout December.

Timeform Rating

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CITY SELECTIONS Mark Johnston’s SPIRIT CATCHER, who changed hands for 120,000 pounds at the breeze-ups, produced a taking debut performance when justifying heavy market support over this trip at Redcar and looks capable of defying a penalty in a race of this nature. Richard Hannon’s Windseeker ran with promise on his debut over 1m at Nottingham and looks the obvious danger with this drop back in trip likely to see him in a better light. Expensive purchase Francesi underwhelmed on his debut at Yarmouth but should do better with that experience under his belt. SPIRIT CATCHER

This looks like a two horse race. WINDSEEKER ran a nice debut at Nottingham 10 days ago and he should come on for that outing. He’s just favoured to get off the mark at the second time of asking. Spirit Catcher won well on debut at Redcar earlier in the month though and he should be thereabouts once again.

CITY SELECTIONS This contest which could be within the grasp of HEERS HARRY, who appeared to take a step forward when fourth on his nursery debut over 5f at Wolverhampton after a three-month break. He is entitled strip fitter now and the combination of a longer trip and a 2lb fall in the weights might just be enough to see him home in front. Jusumi, a staying-on second over 5f at Wolverhampton last time, is an obvious danger over this longer trip from a low draw, while blinkers could eke out improvement from Berry Quick who was a decent third over C&D last month. CITY SELECTIONS An open contest in which the unexposed HOWZAK makes a level of appeal following a much-improved effort on his handicap debut from an unfavourable wide draw over 6f here last month. The fact that he was only overhauled relatively late having set a strong pace suggests that this drop back to 5f will suit and his present mark looks exploitable. Rockesbury recently shaped with similar promise on his first 5f start since his juvenile days and should remain competitive, as could the regularly-placed Bluella. HOWZAK

PLAY SMARTER

HOWZAK improved on handicap debut over 6f here a fortnight ago, should have no issue with the drop in trip and is less exposed than most of his rivals. He makes plenty of appeal in a thin looking contest. Bluella looks the best alternative as she is relatively consistent for one operating at this level. Jaffathegaffa isn’t out of it either.

CITY SELECTIONS Really competitive stuff but a solid case could be made out for C&D winner COMMIT NO NUISANCE, who ran arguably better than ever when a runner-up to a well-handicapped sort here last time. Lafan finished virtually upsides that day and is also an obvious player having only picked up a 1lb rise for a subsequent win at Kempton. Frantoio was below par at Brighton last time but had shown enough previously to be of interest off his present mark, while Mark Of Respect is running too well to dismiss despite a less than perfect draw. PLAY SMARTER

COMMIT NO NUISANCE has a good record over C&D and he’s been lightly raced over the summer unlike a few in here so he may be a bit fresher than his rivals. He looks the one to side with in a competitive race. Lafan has two all-weather wins to his name including over C&D and he will be a formidable threat. Azets is consistent and his yard are in good form so he could offer some each-way value.

CITY SELECTIONS IGOTATEXT bumped into a useful rival when runner-up at Yarmouth on his penultimate start in May and, having looked in need of the run on his return at Salisbury last month, the three-year-old is tipped to notch up his third career win. CITY SELECTIONS EMBLEM EMPIRE got the better of a couple of subsequent winners when scoring at Lingfield last month, giving the impression he had more in the tank than the winning margin would suggest. The son of Gleneagles makes plenty of appeal under a 7lb penalty, with Bluenose Belle rated his main danger, having impressed when landing a Newcastle maiden on her latest outing in April. Immelmann finished behind some smart three-year-olds in turf maidens earlier in the year and is also worth noting in first-time blinkers. EMBLEM EMPIRE

Western Beat was only narrowly denied when returning from a break at Wolverhampton last time and should go well, while Arabic Welcome returns to an artificial surface and is another to consider.

Several in with a chance but it could pay to side with ENGRAVE. Julia Feilden’s charge is yet to score away from this venue and, having slipped back down in the weights, she’s taken to notch a fifth C&D victory. Athers proved better than ever to open his account over C&D a fortnight ago so could give the selection most to think about, ahead of Western Beat and Wimpole Hall.
