Easby Abbey

Today's feature race is tituled in memory of Easby Abbey, a local bred son of Narrator (son of influential stallion Nearco) and Catterick racing hero who was born in 1967.

Across his racing life, Easby Abbey was the winner of 22 races under Rules from his 57 starts, and was notably runner up to Comedy Of Errors in the 1973 Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Trained by Peter Easterby, Easby Abbey ran seven times on the flat managing only one place and it wasn’t until he was put over hurdles that he found his true vocation.

In 1975 he beat Flashy Boy and Tingle Creek intheBensonandHedgesGoldCupatSandown and carried 11st 10lb to victory in the Massey Ferguson Gold Cup at Cheltenham, giving 18lb and a ten length drubbing to third placed Royal Frolic, who later the same season won the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

He won 13 times over hurdles partnered firstly by Paddy Broderick andthenexclusivelybyRonBarry, and as well as his near miss at Cheltenham was placed in the Scottish Champion Hurdle.

A rugged front runner and a lover of fastground, hewasbeatenonlyonceas a novice over fences, in the Mildmay at Liverpool.

The bay gelding then successfully made the transition from top hurdler to top chaser until leg trouble prematurely brought about the end of his career at the age of eight.

Sadly, injury ruled Easby Abbey out of that running of the Gold Cup and led to his retirement.

Easby Abbey went on to enjoy 17 years of happy retirement at Broken Brea Farm, Richmond, looked after by Clive Simpson, grandson of Mrs Gwen Blow who both bred

and raced the horse. Described by Mr Simpson as a ‘real character’, he remembered that Easby Abbey would frequently jump out of his field and gallop off down the road.

Today’s race is run in memory of this homebred local star
