HORSE WELFARE AT CATTERICK
At all Catterick race meetings we has a minimum of two fully qualified equine vets who are employed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. They work closely with a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer who is also always in attendance. In the unfortunate event of an accident or a horse becoming hurt or injured, the racecourse vets are on hand to act swiftly and treat a horse without delay
It is now standard procedure that all racecourses have modern, fully equipped horse ambulances so that horses can be moved and treated in more comfort. If a horse is injured out on the course, the vets and their assistants will erect screens enabling them to work in private - the use of screens will not automatically mean the horse has been seriously injured. Serious injuries at Catterick Racecourse are thankfully very rare, but we regard any injury, however slight it may be, an absolute priority and we would like to assure all racegoers that we have the right people, the right equipment and right procedures to deal with them efficiently
FIRST AID
Will all racegoers please note the location of the first aid post which is at the entrance to the Disabled Car Park.
RACE CONDITIONS
For today’s race conditions, please see page 31.
SHUTTLE BUS
Catterick are pleased to announce that they are now providing a shuttle bus service between the racecourse and Richmond town centre. Today the shuttle bus will leave the main entrance approximately 10 minutes after the last race. For further details please contact the Racecourse Office.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
The Pinker’s Pond Apprentice Handicap Stakes has been named after the horse that gave Willie Carson the first of his 3,828 winners in Britain, in a seven-furlong apprentice handicap at Catterick Racecourse on 19 July 1962.
William Carson, OBE, is a retired flat jockey. He is the fourth most successful jockey in Great Britain having been British Champion Jockey five times (1972, 1973, 1978, 1980 and 1983), won 17 British Classic Races, and passed 100 winners in a season 23 times. We are delighted that he is here today to present the prize to the Winning Connections of the Pinker’s Pond Apprentice Handicap.
Willie started his career as an apprentice at Captain Gerald Armstrong’s stables at Tupgill, North Yorkshire. Interstingly, Pinker’s Pond is also a fairly large tarn situated next to Coverham Lane as the road drops down from Middleham Low Moor. The moor above the tarn is used for training racehorses close to the nearby riding stables at Tupgill where the young Willie Carson was apprenticed.

SHARK TWO ONE was successful over C&D last autumn and has been running well enough in recent weeks to think his turn may be near again. C&D specialist Langholm won comfortably at Thirsk last week and will be a big threat if an outside stall doesn’t prove too much of an inconvenience. Mutanaaseq and Obee Jo are others who know where the winning post is over this C&D.
