HORSE WELFARE AT CATTERICK

At all Catterick race meetings we has a minimum of two fully qualified equine vets who are employed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. They work closely with a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer who is also always in attendance. In the unfortunate event of an accident or a horse becoming hurt or injured, the racecourse vets are on hand to act swiftly and treat a horse without delay.

It is now standard procedure that all racecourses have modern, fully equipped horse ambulances so that horses can be moved and treated in more comfort. If a horse is injured out on the course, the vets and their assistants will erect screens enabling them to work in private - the use of screens will not automatically mean the horse has been seriously injured. Serious injuries at Catterick Racecourse are thankfully very rare, but we regard any injury, however slight it may be, an absolute priority and we would like to assure all racegoers that we have the right people, the right equipment and right procedures to deal with them efficiently

FIRST AID

Will all racegoers please note the location of the first aid post which is at the entrance to the Disabled Car Park.

RACE CONDITIONS

For today’s race conditions, please see page 31.

SHUTTLE BUS

Catterick are pleased to announce that they are now providing a shuttle bus service between the racecourse and Richmond town centre. Today the shuttle bus will leave the main entrance approximately 10 minutes after the last race. For further details please contact the Racecourse Office.

11. Timeform Rating (TRF) Each horse is given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not without hope.

HIIII Given little or no chance.

Form Additions

/ = denotes new season - = denotes new year

C = Course Winner

D = Distance Winner CD = Course & Distance Winner

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

BF = Beaten Favourite

d = disqualified

Bold form figures = All-Weather form

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

EDUCATING RITA made a very encouraging start to her career when just touched off by Jm Jhingree, who had the benefit of experience, at Redcar last month. She enjoys a healthy pull at the weights with that rival here and is taken to go one better this time. Jm Jhingree wasn’t disgraced in a fairly valuable event at Beverley last time but he looks vulnerable all the same. Desdemona and Horus can both be expected to build on their debut efforts and may emerge as the main dangers.

It could be worth chancing REFUGE, who took a step back in the right direction at Ripon and he is lurking on a seriously tempting mark. Birkenhead has to be feared on the back of a decisive C&D success, while Object also did the job well here on his penultimate start and will be a threat if reproducing that level of form. 5th REGIMENT ROYAL ARTILLERY (THE YORKSHIRE GUNNERS)

5th Regiment Royal Artillery (The Yorkshire Gunners) is the Army’s specialist Surveillance and Target Acquisition (STA) Regiment. Based in Marne Barracks in Catterick Village since 1994. The Regiment traces its foundations back to 1939, formed on the outbreak of WWII, although the Batteries within the Regiment hail from as far back as the Napoleonic wars.

Originally 5th Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, the Regiment was equipped with light 18 pounder guns and remained a gun regiment until the late 1990s, when it re-rolled into a specialist surveillance unit. Today the Regiment is equipped with a range of technical capabilities designed to find and track the enemy, understand their intentions and if necessary, launch counterfires. The Regiment’s capabilities fall into two broad categories:

Weapon-locating Radar. The Regiment operates several types of radar, each optimised for detecting different types of weapon systems. Some examples include TAIPAN which are produced for the British Army by SAAB. The TAIPAN can detect artillery and mortars, identifying not only their firing points, but predicting where the munitions will land in advance. With the TAIPAN the Regiment can both conduct early-warning and cue counter-fires.

STA Patrols. The Regiment employs a battery of Surveillance and Reconnaissance patrols. A group of highly trained soldiers designed to operate at range and near the enemy. Experts in both urban and rural covert surveillance, they are skilled in both transmitting information and imagery of targets and calling in long-range rocket fire, aviation, or aircraft munitions.

The Regiment employs a vast range of capabilities, technically advanced and operated by bright, confident, and tactically astute soldiers to aggressively find an enemy who rarely want to be found. The Regiment is now a part of the newly formed Deep Recce Strike Brigade Combat Team as a part of 3 UK Division and provides a range of battle winning assets.

It is the Regiment’s pleasure to be part of today’s races and we remain ever grateful for the support of the community we serve.
