HORSE WELFARE AT CATTERICK

At all Catterick race meetings we has a minimum of two fully qualified equine vets who are employed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. They work closely with a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer who is also always in attendance. In the unfortunate event of an accident or a horse becoming hurt or injured, the racecourse vets are on hand to act swiftly and treat a horse without delay. It is now standard procedure that all racecourses have modern, fully equipped horse ambulances so that horses can be moved and treated in more comfort. If a horse is injured out on the course, the vets and their assistants will erect screens enabling them to work in private - the use of screens will not automatically mean the horse has been seriously injured. Serious injuries at Catterick Racecourse are thankfully very rare, but we regard any injury, however slight it may be, an absolute priority and we would like to assure all racegoers that we have the right people, the right equipment and right procedures to deal with them efficiently

FIRST AID

Will all racegoers please note the location of the first aid post which is at the entrance to the Disabled car Park.

RACE CONDITIONS

For today’s race conditions, please see page 31.

SHUTTLE BUS

Catterick are pleased to announce that they are now providing a shuttle bus service between the racecourse and Richmond town centre. Today the shuttle bus will leave the main entrance approximately 10 minutes after the last race. For further details please contact the Racecourse Office.

BF = Beaten Favourite

d = disqualified

Bold form figures = All-Weather form

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

A brief history of Catterick Racecourse

Catterick Racecourse is located on the site where a 6,000-seater amphitheatre was constructed by the Romans – part of the Roman wall can still be seen today just inside the track. The amphitheatre also doubled as a military parade ground and entertainment venue where the public could watch gladiators and dog-fighting. Today – the racecourse still serves as an outdoor public entertainment venue, just as it was in Roman times – just with different entertainment!

Part of the Brough Estate, Catterick Racecourse is owned by the Worthington family and has been in the same family for centuries. The preceding Chairman, Valerie Worthington – who’s maiden name was Lawson – is the daughter of the 4th Baronet of Brough Hall. In fact, the racecourse apparently used to be almost in the ‘front garden’ of Brough Hall, prior to the construction of the Great North Road (what is now the A1), when it was moved to its present location and became popular for its easy access.

Although racing took place in Richmond from as early as 1669, the first recorded meeting at the location of the present day Catterick Racecourse was a two-day meeting on Easter Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd April 1783.

The racecourse has changed a lot over the years. A permanent course was not built until 1813 and the first grandstand was only added in 1906. The framework of that original grandstand is still evident, despite a number of more recent developments at the course. In 2004, the stable yard and hostel was redeveloped, while the first of a three-phase development started with the new entrance, offices and saddling boxes in 2019, followed by the parade ring redevelopment, weighing room extension and new hosebox park. Finally, Rishi Sunak MP for Richmond (Yorks), opened the Dales Stand, in April 2021.

Catterick first issued membership tokens in 1848 to raise funds for development but it was not until 1888 that the general public were charged an entry fee. Prior to this time, only those using the stand were charged entry.

In 1946, Major Leslie Petch became Clerk of the Course and the track was redesigned to its present form. Mr John Sanderson, took up the role of Clerk of the Course and Managing Director in 1972. John stepped down as Managing Director on New Year’s Day 2023, although remains as one of the course’s Director’s.

Memories of Catterick Racecourse

John Sanderson, Director at Catterick Racecourse, reflects on some of his memories of the track

I joined the staff at York Racecourse as Assistant Manager on 1st November 1966 and Major Perch (who was the manager at both York and Catterick) arranged for me to work at Catterick on race days. Betting Duty (tax) had just been introduced by the Government and every racecourse had to check that all bookmakers were in credit with their duty before selling them a daily betting badge to operate. If they were behind with their duty/tax, we had to sell them a betting tax voucher of sufficient value to ensure they were in credit before we could sell them the betting badge. I was put in charge of that operation (presumably because I was a newly qualified chartered accountant!) and it went OK but as there were many more on-course bookmakers in those days we could collect up to £15,000 in betting duty at a time when the race day gate receipts would be less than £4,000.

There's a TIME CAPSULE buried in the centre of the Parade Ring which was placed there in a ceremony during the Catterick race meeting on 1st January 2000. The capsule contains that day’s race card and the names of those involved in the ceremony – it is not to be dug up and opened until 1st January 2050!

FRANKIE VAUGHAN, a highly successful and quite famous singer/actor whose ‘signature’ song was “Give me the moonlight” once came racing at Catterick when he was doing a ‘summer season’ at Scarborough and I persuaded him to lead the singing of ‘Happy Birthday to You’ for a racegoer who was having her

birthday celebrations at the race meeting - it went down very well with the crowd!

The now picturesque lake in the middle of the racetrack was created over a period of some seven/eight years during the late 1980s and the early 1990s when the landlords decided to have the gravel deposits extracted from that area. Prior to that it had been grass fields on which sheep used to graze.

During a Catterick Saturday race meeting in June during the mid-seventies, there was a severe thunderstorm during racing when the horses (which were two-year-olds) were in the parade ring. In the commotion one got away from its groom, escaped from the parade ring and ran loose amongst the crowd for about 5 minutes before we could catch it. Luckily no one was hurt and after an inspection of the racetrack racing continued. The last race that day was an Apprentice Race with 10 runners and as the horses left the parade ring to go to the start the Senior Steward (who was Lord Bolton) looked at me and said, “It’s been an eventful day John and we now have 10 of the worst riders in Europe setting off to race round one of its trickiest circuits so if we can survive this, we can survive anything!” All went well and we survived!

During the late 1970s, I arranged for 4 Polish horses to come from Warsaw and run at York, and they stayed at York for just over a week. The party included two jockeys Melnitski and Mazurek (Micky Melnitski being the ‘Lester Piggott’ of Poland) and an apprentice jockey called Robert Sardovski. There was a two-day race meeting at Catterick the week before the York meeting where Peter Poston, a Newmarket trainer I used to ride for in my riding days, had some entries and I persuaded him to use Robert Sardowski for one of his runners. The Polish trainer, Mr Gwovatski, came to Catterick with Melnitski and Sardovski and we all walked to the track together before racing with Melnitski giving advice to Sardovski about how to ride it. The actual race was uneventful, and the horse was unplaced, but Catterick got quite a lot of publicity out of having a Polish apprentice jockey riding! In those days Poland was very much a member of the old ‘Communist Block’ and although the trainer, both jockeys and the apprentice all hated communism and the Russians the horsebox driver was a ‘mole’ so they had to be very careful what they said when he was around!

TODAY’S TIP

STAR GUEST looks the way to go given she raced freely on her first start for four months when runner-up at Newmarket, and she can take a step forward from that. Roger Varian’s improving Wolverhampton scorer Centrefold should ensure Charlie Appleby’s filly doesn’t have things all her own way though, while handicap debutante Wild Side can’t be taken lightly either
