OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

WELCOME TO CATTERICK On behalf of everyone at Catterick Racecourse I would like to welcome you all racing today. I would especially like to welcome today’s sponsors and thank them for their generous support. I would like to wish Lyn Cresey a very happy birthday and hope her and her family enjoy their day celebrating, and I would like to wish the family of Bryan Bell Pratt the best of luck in picking the winner of the race run in his memory. As today is an Annual Badge Holders Guest Day, I hope that plenty of Catterick Badge Holders have been able to take advantage of the offer and are enjoying sharing a day out at Catterick Racecourse with friends and family. Looking ahead we have three further meetings coming up in quick succession on Friday evening 20th May, Saturday 28th May and Friday 3rd June which falls on the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend, so there is plenty of action to look forward to. I hope that you all have an enjoyable and successful day and look forward to welcoming you back on Friday 20th May Best wishes,

HORSERACE BETTING LEVY BOARD Horserace Betting Levy Board – The Horserace Betting Levy Board kindly provides a ratecard contribution towards prize money at this Racecourse in 2022. HORSE WELFARE AT CATTERICK At all Catterick race meetings we has a minimum of two fully qualified equine vets who are employed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. They work closely with a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer who is also always in attendance. In the unfortunate event of an accident or a horse becoming hurt or injured, the racecourse vets are on hand to act swiftly and treat a horse without delay. It is now standard procedure that all racecourses have modern, fully equipped horse ambulances so that horses can be moved and treated in more comfort. If a horse is injured out on the course, the vets and their assistants will erect screens enabling them to work in private - the use of screens will not automatically mean the horse has been seriously injured. Serious injuries at Catterick Racecourse are thankfully very rare, but we regard any injury, however slight it may be, an absolute priority and we would like to assure all racegoers that we have the right people, the right equipment and right procedures to deal with them efficiently. FIRST AID Will all racegoers please note the location of the first aid post which is at the entrance to the Disabled car Park RACE CONDITIONS For today’s race conditions, please see page 27. SHUTTLE BUS Catterick are pleased to announce that they are now providing a shuttle bus service between the racecourse and Richmond town centre. Today the shuttle bus will leave the main entrance at approximately 4.40pm. For further details please contact the Racecourse Office.

Look out for the charity Racing to School today; you shouldn’t miss them as they will be leading a group of local pupils and their teachers through every corner of the racecourse for an action-packed day of fun challenges and discovery. The charity works nationwide with over 250 schools, and in this its 20th anniversary year will reach around 9,000 young people – at UK racecourses, trainers’ yards and studs. They deliver free, outdoor activity days to support the learning and to boost the self-confidence of children aged nine and above. Racing to School uses racing venues as unique, fast-moving classrooms full of opportunities to practise and improve subjects like maths, literacy and problem-solving. The charity is only able to support young people’s education through the kind donations it receives.

This race is being run in the memory of Bryan Bell Pratt who farmed near Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales and who in tandem, had a lifelong love of and involvement in horse racing. Bryan was fortunate enough to have some success over the years with horses he had in partnership with friends, including here at Catterick racecourse. Whilst he enjoyed racing under both codes, Bryan really loved flat racing and above all, had most success with sprinters. Today’s handicap for veteran sprinters is therefore the perfect race to be run in Bryan’s memory, with his sons, close family and friends in attendance.
