OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

WELCOME TO CATTERICK On behalf of everyone at Catterick Racecourse, I would like to welcome you all racing today. On behalf of everyone at Catterick Racecourse I would like to welcome you all racing today, Racing TV Club Day. I would especially like to welcome our sponsors today, Mr Clive Simpson, who very kindly is very kindly sponsoring the Easby Abbey Handicap Chase, to commemorate his family owned top chaser. I would also like to thank Racing TV for their support and to welcome all those members who are taking advantage of complimentary admission with the club day. Today’s card looks quite intriguing, and in particular the smallest field on the card, the novices chase, which sees former Fighting Fifth winner, Cornerstone Lad, reoppose his previous race conqueror, Mackenburg, but on much more favourable terms. It looks potentially a very exciting contest. Looking ahead there is only one jumps meeting left of the Catterick 2021/22 season which takes place next Wednesday, features our only Hunter Chase of the season and is Countryside Ladies’ Day, so definitely a highlight! I hope that you all have an enjoyable and successful day and look forward to welcoming you back to our next fixture on Wednesday 9th March. Best wishes,

BETTING RING ENQUIRIES All Betting Ring Enquiries should be directed to the Betting Ring Manager. BIG SCREEN Catterick Racecourse are pleased to announce that the big screen is present at today’s race meeting and will be at all Catterick’s fixtures during 2022. CASH MACHINE A cash machine is available for use in the Gods Solution Bar. COMMUNICATION DEVICES The use of mobile telephones, laptops or any other communication device is strictly controlled on all racecourses. Mobile telephones may not be used in or near any designated betting area, or for off-course betting purposes. Laptops or tablets may not be used in public areas, including all bars and restaurants. Failure to comply could result in your removal from the premises as per the Terms and Conditions of entry. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES In the event of an incident which necessitates the partial or total evacuation of any area of the racecourse, announcements will be made over the Public Address and on the CCTV. Please follow the directions of the racecourse staff and leave your area in a calm and orderly manner. If you feel you require extra assistance please notify the nearest member of the racecourse staff. FACILITIES FOR DISABLED RACEGOERS A viewing ramp for guests in wheelchairs only is situated in front of the Tote building next to the Winning Streak Restaurant. There are disabled toilet facilities in the Winning Streak restaurant, the Gods Solution bar and next to the Winners Enclosure. A lift in the Gods Solution bar is provided for access to the first floor of the Grandstand. HORSERACE BETTING LEVY BOARD The Horserace Betting Levy Board General Prize Fund scheme provides a sum towards prize money at this Racecourse in 2022. HORSE WELFARE AT CATTERICK At all Catterick race meetings we has a minimum of two fully qualified equine vets who are employed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. They work closely with a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer who is also always in attendance. In the unfortunate event of an accident or a horse becoming hurt or injured, the racecourse vets are on hand to act swiftly and treat a horse without delay. It is now standard procedure that all racecourses have modern, fully equipped horse ambulances so that horses can be moved and treated in more comfort. If a horse is injured out on the course, the vets and their assistants will erect screens enabling them to work in private - the use of screens will not automatically mean the horse has been seriously injured. Serious injuries at Catterick Racecourse are thankfully very rare, but we regard any injury, however slight it may be, an absolute priority and we would like to assure all racegoers that we have the right people, the right equipment and right procedures to deal with them efficiently. MEDICAL ROOM Will all racegoers please note the location of the Medical Room, which is situated at the back of the weighing room. RACE CONDITIONS For today’s race conditions, please see page 27. SHUTTLE BUS Catterick are pleased to announce that they are now providing a shuttle bus service between the racecourse and Richmond town centre. Today the shuttle bus will leave the main entrance at approximately 4.20pm. For further details please contact the Racecourse Office.

CATTERICK NEWS TUESDAY, MARCH 1ST 2022

EASBY ABBEY LOCAL HERO

Easby Abbey, the winner of 22 races under Rules, and runner up to Comedy Of Errors in the 1973 Champion Hurdle, the bay gelding successfully made the transition from top hurdler to top chaser until leg trouble prematurely brought about the end of his career at the age of eight. Trained by Peter Easterby, Easby Abbey ran seven times on the flat managing only one place and it wasn’t until he was put over hurdles that he found his true vocation. He won 13 times over hurdles partnered firstly by Paddy Broderick and then exclusively by Ron Barry, and as well as his near miss at Cheltenham was placed in the Scottish Champion Hurdle. A rugged front runner and a lover of fast ground he was beaten only once as a novice over fences, in the Mildmay at Liverpool.

In 1975 he beat Flashy Boy and Tingle Creek in the Benson and Hedges Gold Cup at Sandown and carried 11st 10lb to victory in the Massey Ferguson Gold Cup at Cheltenham, giving 18lb and a ten length drubbing to third placed Royal Frolic, who later the same season won the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Sadly, injury ruled Easby Abbey out of the Gold Cup and led to his retirement. Easby Abbey enjoyed 17 years of happy retirement at Broken Brea Farm, Richmond, looked after by Clive Simpson, grandson of Mrs Gwen Blow who both bred and raced the horse. Described by Mr Simpson as a ‘real character’ Easby Abbey would frequently jump out of his field and gallop off down the road! Today’s race remembers this home bred local star.

DA VINCI HAND clearly goes well at this track and arrives in form, so he seems the obvious answer in a race that might not take much winning. Getaway Jewel is a player after his encouraging fourth last time, and Mymilan could make his presence felt dropped back markedly in trip.
