WELCOME

My warmest of welcomes to you all This May Whit meeting heralds our new season, and I am always so thankful to all who join us.

The brand-new Summer Jumps Championship continues today – it is going to be exciting to see how the results are shaping up at this early stage

We appreciate the support of our partners and today we welcome : Hadwins

Hales of Cartmel

Yarwoods

I am also delighted to welcome guests of Racing TV today – our thanks to you for joining us.

Today’s Charity is Women’s Community Matters, a highly effective local Charity based in Barrow-in Furness. I would say please do go and visit them, where they will be happy to tell you all about their work.

This Wednesday meeting is truly a day for the core racing fans to enjoy the fields up close; there is nothing like being so close to the action

I hope we see you again later this season and I wish you all the very best!

CARTMEL JOCKEYS’ CHALLENGE

aboard Musiquee De Fee in the Molson Coors Handicap Hurdle, in the most exciting finish on the card The ever popular

We have a familiar name at the top the leaderboard after the last two days of racing Champion Jockey Sean Bowen has gone to the summit after riding a winner, a second and a third. It is a rare meeting anywhere that Sean comes away winnerless, and on Monday the first place came in the Carolines Big Birthday Celebration Handicap on Sir Tivo

Congratulations go to Josh Bryan who rode his first Cartmel winner on only his second ride

Tommie Beau looked set for a repeat victory, until Joshs’ powerful finish landed the spoils by the smallest of margins. The winner ran only 2 days previously and will be one to follow

Brian Hughes is in second after a number of place finishes, and will be looking to close the gap to our leader with a number of good rides this evening

Sean Quinlan is up to a share of 3rd position Last year’s Cartmel Champion was successful on the impressive Evenwood Sonofagun in the John and Tony Connell Memorial Handicap Hurdle The winner will be out to follow up when turned out quickly tonight.

Sean Bowen
Brian Hughes

TRAINER PTS

CARTMEL TRAINERS’ CHALLENGE

There is more familiarity in the Trainer Challenge. 2024 victor Ben Haslam has posted an early marker, sitting at the top with 10 points after repeating Saturday’s result of winner and a second once again on Monday Cartmel course specialist Ilikedwayourthinkin won the Molson Coors Veterans Handicap Chase after the first past the post Moroder unfortunately lost his weight cloth during the race Ben has a number of good opportunities this evening to maintain his advantage. In hot pursuit is Rebecca Menzies. Placed runners are important to keep adding to the scoreboard and Rebecca’s runners kept hitting the frame on Monday to ensure that the gap between her and Ben is not insurmountable

There was plenty of Cumbrian success with Appleby trainer Lizzie Quinlan’s Evenwood Sonofagun victorious in the John and Tony Connell Handicap Hurdle, and Penrith’s Dianne Sayer’s ever popular Charlie Uberalles a comfortable winner in the Carer Support South Lakes Handicap There are always great scenes in the winner’s enclosure when locally trained horses win, and our podium often isn’t big enough for the numbers of connections celebrating Young trainer Alex Wilson had his first winer when Hollywood Harmon was successful in our concluding Fraser Cup. Alex has had winners on the Point To Point circuit, but this was his first win under Rules Alex trains in Peter Beaumont’s old yard and we wish him every success in his future training career

Ben Haslam
Rebecca Menzies

HOW TO PLACE A BET

PLACE YOUR BETS....

Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.

BET IN TWO WAYS -

1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides

HOW TO READ

2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

Sam England took this opening novice hurdle last year and may do so again with French recruit SANG POUR SANG, who achieved fairly useful form in his native country. Ben Haslam is another trainer who does well at this lakeland venue and At Vimeiro is an interesting newcomer to the hurdle ranks after an AW Flat success when last seen. Terrorise and Musselburgh winner Spit Spot are others likely to have a say.

GREAT BRITISH BONUS SCHEME

The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Majority funded by the HBLB.

THE YARWOODS SELLING HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (CLASS 5)

Race Description Selling races exist as an outlet for connections to sell their horses Any horse that wins a ‘seller’ such as this two miles and one furlong hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards, is automatically put up for public auction in the Winners’ Enclosure at the end of the race and goes to the highest bidder The auction is often well worth seeing, so make sure to head that way after the race

Race Description This is a two miles and six furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

SHANTWOPOINTFIVE is a previous C&D winner with a progressive profile and, having shaped well in a well-contested Cheltenham handicap on her most recent outing, she makes plenty of appeal. The dangers are headed by Rock Hurley, who remains well treated on his French form and Mojo Ego, who shouldn’t be taken lightly from a career-low mark.

Race Description This is the second division of Race 3. Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for To avoid horses being denied a run, which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority allows the race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.

Race Description This is a two miles and one furlong handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100.
