WELCOME

A very warm Cartmel welcome to you all today – Cartmel’s day to celebrate with our two Class 2 Races in terms of quality and prize money. Both have seen strong support over the years, and for this we are very grateful. Our ambition with the race programme is to offer a varied selection of races, to suit the horse population and racing overall in the North of the country – to this end we continue to invest in the higher-class races.

Of course, in order to continue with this strategy, our sponsors are so very important, and I would like to give heartfelt thanks to Oakmere Homes who have supported the two Class 2 Races for some time now.

With grateful thanks also to our other sponsors today : Fleets Farm, Beckside Spa and A.W. Blake.

Today our Charity is Beep Doctors –this charity represents a crew of highly skilled Doctors, who volunteer their time to help those in need The Doctors have specialist training in enhanced pre-hospital emergency care and provide additional patient care that paramedics alone cannot provide

They are situated on the Paddock side today and I would recommend you visit them to learn more about the service they offer.

Finally, please do look out for Bob Champion today, I am so delighted he is able to join us.

Please do enjoy your day with us. From me and the whole team here at Cartmel, thank you once again for your support - may I wish you all the very best of luck

CARTMEL JOCKEYS’ CHALLENGE

In third is our 2024 Jockey Challenge winner Sean Quinlan He gave Evenwood Sonofagun a fantastic ride getting up close home in the Traffic Management Handicap Hurdle

There was little movement at the top the leaderboard for the Cartmel Jockeys after the third of our 9 days of racing.

Champion Jockey Sean Bowen is still at the top despite a rare visit without a winner His two second places ensure that the points tally is ticking over, highlighting that being in the frame adds plenty to the scores Similarly, Brian Hughes has yet to have a winner at Cartmel this season but a number of placed finishes sees the 3 time Champion Jockey in second place.

The top points scorer on the night was James Bowen. He was successful on his only rides on Shantwopointfive in the 1st division of the Traffic Management Handicap, and Shillanvogy in the Womens Community Matters Handicap Both were for the same Trainer/Owner combination with joyous scenes in the Winners Enclosure

A special mention must go the Harry O’Dwyer who was successful on Autonmous Cloud in the concluding NPG Fire and Safety Hunters Chase This was Harry’s first visit to Cartmel and a winning one. Congratulations go to Harry.

James Bowen

TRAINER PTS

CARTMEL TRAINERS’ CHALLENGE

The Training performance of the night came from Warren Greatrex He had 3 runners and came away with 2 winners and a second The fist success was a very comfortable success for Shantwopointfive in the 1st division of the Traffic Management Handicap followed by Shilanavogy in the Womens Community Matters Handicap The runners were looked after by Assistant Trainer Olly Kozak and with 3 horses owned by the same group, we are sure to see them all back soon.

Warren has rocketed into joint second place in the standings behind our reigning Trainer Challenge holder Ben Haslam As in the previous 2 days racing, Ben had one winner for owner JP McManus. The tough Coqolino made it 2 wins in 4 days when easily landing the Go Green Solar Novices Chase Despite carrying a penalty the gelding beat some in form horses and further successes through the Summer are likely to follow

Brian Ellison had only 2 runners and they finished in first and second places. The Hales of Cartmel Novices Hurdle was won by Terrorise under a power-packed ride from Craig Nichol, getting up the last few strides. Brian’s runners are worth looking out for with a fine record here.

Another trainer in form is Cumbrian Lizzie Quinlan Evenwood Sonofagun followed up his win here just 2 days later with another success at the course Who is to say that Lizzie won’t equal or even better last year’s 4 successes from City Derby with this popular winner?

Ben Haslam
Warren Greatrex

HOW TO PLACE A BET

PLACE YOUR BETS....

Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.

BET IN TWO WAYS -

1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides

HOW TO READ

2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

JOLIE COEUR ALLEN showed enough to think she retains a fair level of ability in a handicap here last time and is the form choice. Green Bonnet should have a say on the back of last month’s Kelso hurdle debut second. Out On Her Own and Miss Jm Reidy achieved enough in their sole bumper starts to think they could make their presence felt in a race like this if taking to hurdling

Race Description This is a two miles, six furlongs and 31 yards handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Race Description This is a two miles, six furlongs and 31 yards handicap hurdle race for novices aged four-years-old and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 95. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 95 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90.

Race Description This is a two miles, one furlong and 46 yards handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

Leading course trainer (20-25): J Moffatt (34 wins from 212 runners, 16%) runs HURRICANE ALI Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): G Cromwell (2 wins from 17 runners, 12%) runs COME ON THE LADS

Fancy That: C Collins won this race in 2023 and 2024. The stable runs FIVEONEFIVE & MIGHTY TOM today.

Longest Travellers: FIVEONEFIVE & MIGHTY TOM trained by C Collins, COME ON THE LADS trained by G Cromwell, both Ireland.

The winner of the previous two renewals, FIVEONEFIVE looks to have been campaigned with this race in mind once again and with cheekpieces refitted, he can complete the hat-trick. The progressive D Day Arvalenreeva was impressive when readily landing a hat-trick over C&D last month. That form is working out and she’s feared most ahead of Come On The Lads representing the powerful Gavin Cromwell yard. Hurricane Ali deserves an honourable mention from his falling handicap mark.

Race Description This is a three miles, one furlong and 107 yards handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

UNAUTHORISED BOOKMAKING

It is a condition of entry to this Racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets in the course of their business. Any individual found contravening these conditions will be evicted.

PRIZE MONEY

The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £179,945 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 23rd June to 14th September 2025

Our final race today is named after Bob Champion CBE, a legend of our sport. We are honoured that Bob is here today.

His incredible story of courage and endurance has been an inspiration to many both on and off the racecourse. Bob was having a successful riding career when diagnosed with cancer in 1979 and was given 6 months to live. After chemotherapy, Bob beat the disease and returned to race riding, winning the Grand National on Aldiniti soon after in 1981. This emotional triumph earned the accolade of BBC Sports Personality of the Year Team award

His courage and determination to overcome adversity was highlighted in the film Champions, where the recoveries for both Bob and Aldiniti were brought to a wider audience. Bob wanted to use the fame generated to help others, and after his retirement formed the Bob Champion Cancer Trust. This has raised over £15m pounds for prostate and testicular cancer research. After first getting a MBE, Bob was appointed a CBE in 2021.

Many will know Bob for his racing legacy, but his after racecourse life has inspired and helped millions. Bob will be around the Parade Ring today for those who wish to meet him.

THE BOB CHAMPION HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 5)

BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE

Race Description This two miles, one furlong and 61 yards handicap steeple chase has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 105. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

PLAY SMARTER

GREENROCK ABBEY (engaged to run here on Friday) has been resurgent in recent weeks for James Owen, putting it all together in a switch of headgear when running out an easy winner at Market Rasen 9 days ago. Remaining with plenty of handicapping scope on old form, he’s very much of interest again if turned out quickly. Pittsburg, Lermoos Legend and Jolyjump head up the dangers
