WELCOME

A very warm welcome to you all on this opening day of our 2026 season.

It is wonderful to see you all here; if you are returning to us, thank you so very much, and if this is your first day with us, may your visit exceed expectations.

During the Winter months the racecourse team have been busy working on several projects, with the aim of improving the experience of both human and equine participants whose welfare is all-important to us

I offer my sincere thanks to all Owners and Trainers for their support of Cartmel Racecourse Your contribution is especially heartfelt, given the headwinds facing racing in general and small racecourses in particular

A really integral part of our business is the support of Sponsors and Partners and I am delighted we have a real mix of both longstanding and new Partners with us today :

Sticky Toffee Pudding

Hadwins Motor Group

PSR Marquee Hire

Molson Coors

I must make a special mention RF Miller & Co, now headed by Anita Brook, who has sponsored our main restaurant within the Grandstand We owe her special thanks

Today’s Charity is St Mary’s Hospice, Ulverston – a really highly valued local facility The care and compassion provided by St Mary’s are second to none. Please find out more from their volunteers this afternoon and support the Charity if you can.

I hope you have a very enjoyable first day of 2026 racing at Cartmel

HOW TO PLACE A BET

PLACE YOUR BETS....

Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.

BET IN TWO WAYS -

1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides

HOW TO READ

2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

ENJOY THE RACES IN SAFETY

A day at Cartmel Racecourse should be great fun for everyone; nobody wants an injury or an incident to spoil their day. So, when push comes to shove, we need to make sure that there isn’t any pushing or shoving

The racecourse team prepares carefully for each event and we take every precaution to ensure that the site is as safe as is practical. However, we also need some help from you – to take responsibility for your own safety and to respect the safety and comfort of those around you. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a brief list of precautions that we’d like all visitors to consider:

ALCOHOL & SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Fortunately very few accidents occur at Cartmel Racecourse, but those that do are most likely to be relatively minor incidents involving someone who has had too much to drink Quite simply: you’ll be safer if you drink less alcohol

On the rare occasion that we receive a customer complaint, it’s quite likely to be linked to the behaviour of someone who’s had one too many So please drink responsibly and encourage your friends to stay within their limits

Any incident involving substance abuse will be dealt with by Cumbria Police.

SLIPS, TRIPS, FALLS

parkland, that forms the racecourse, includes many uneven surfaces which may become slippery in wet conditions. Please take care of yourselves and mind where you walk. Don’t try to run faster than your legs can go, even if you think your bookmaker might be packing away for the day.

The most common cause for a visit to our medical tent is sunstroke… Okay, that’s only on hot days The most common cause, on a normal day, is a grazed knee Many of these incidents involve children aged under five years old or adults that have had one drink too many (see previous point about alcohol). Customers are reminded that the natural

FENCES, WALLS & BARRIERS

The fences, walls and temporary barriers located on the racecourse are intended to segregate people into specific areas. This may include segregating people from horses or people from sensitive or hazardous equipment Please do not attempt to climb over, sit on or stand on any barriers – regardless of whether they appear to be permanent or temporary features – they are not designed to take a person’s weight.

ENCLOSURES

We remain very happy that our visitors can travel between enclosures to experience all that Cartmel Racecourse has to offer However, these routes use the racing surface and we must always make sure that the

horses have fully left the track, before we open the gates to humans. Whilst we are sorry you may need to wait – please understand that any delays are due to us keeping you safe

RECYCLING

All of our waste is recycled at the waste depot so please feel free to use any bin.

TREES

The scenery at the racecourse is enhanced by beautiful trees, including some very old oaks However, despite clichés such as ‘strong as an oak’ it should be noted that all trees are capable of shedding branches with little warning While we inspect all the trees on the racecourse annually, we recommend that you do not sit beneath the branches. We especially ask that neither children, nor adults, swing or climb on the branches of trees within the parkland

PARKING

areas) and do not sit on or lean over barriers near to the horses. The running rails are designed to encourage the horses to stay on the track – but they will not withstand a horse’s weight if they hit them, nor a jockey’s if he is thrown over them – so be prepared to move if a horse is behaving erratically

VEHICLE MOVEMENT

Be aware of moving vehicles at all times. If you are driving a vehicle, please pay special attention to pedestrians.

BARBECUES

Every year the first aid team will treat at least one person with burnt fingers and we will be required to extinguish at least one fire in a wheelie bin. If you intend to bring a barbecue, please ensure that you handle it safely, take care not to scorch the grass and dispose of it in a metal bin – only when it is fully extinguished

Why do I need to pre-book parking now? This is a decision taken by the authorities out-with our control and what they are looking for is a record in advance of everyone who is driving a car on-site. Why is there less car parking on site now? Again, this has been mandated by the external authorities in order to maintain a safe distance between vehicles and pedestrians.

WATER

No gas barbecues or gas canisters are permitted on the racecourse

Please extinguish all BBQs 20 minutes before racing starts

CHILDREN

Children are naturally attracted by the water in the beck that meanders through the Paddock Enclosure For reasons that should be obvious, we recommend that children are supervised at all times. We also recommend that anyone paddling in the beck wears shoes or boots to protect their feet Animals use the beck upstream (and downstream), so please do not use the beck for washing up your picnic utensils, for drinking or for cleaning your hands.

HORSES

Whilst its brilliant to be up close to the racing action, we would appreciate you not allowing children to sit on the racetrack perimeter fence. Also – if you see any damage to racecourse fences, temporary structures or furniture we would appreciate you reporting this damage as soon as possible to a member of our stewarding team

ABANDONMENT

Horses are big and run very fast; hopefully yours will run fastest of all. Please pay attention when in close proximity to the horses: stay on the public side of any barriers (close to the track or horse walk

Abandonment refunds: Full refunds for general admission tickets will be given if racing is abandoned before the first race A 50% refund will be given if racing is abandoned before the third or featured race No cash refunds will be given on the day, but will be administered by post after the meeting Please retain your tickets as they will be required for your refund application Applications for refunds should be sent within one month of the fixture.

JOCKEYS’ & TRAINERS’ WINNERS 2025

JOCKEYS’ CHALLENGE

TRAINERS’ CHALLENGE

Charlotte Jones regained her top Jockey title, having the win wrapped up long before the season end to the delight of her many supporters The biggest crowds are around the winners Enclosure after Charlottes victories, where it is all smiles, with maybe the exception of the Bookmakers.

We are pleased that the Bowen brothers support us frequently Sean rode his first ever winner at Cartmel, and the dual Champion Jockey is certain to ride a number of winners here this Summer He amassed an incredible 241 winners last season, almost twice as many as his nearest pursuer. Fresh from 2 winners at the Cheltenham Festival James will also be among the winners here this Summer

Another Cheltenham victor was the ever popular Richie McLernon He is a regular in the top 3 of our Jockey Challenge , with many successes in the in the famous JP McManus colours.

Sean Quinlan rides the track so well, and will be among the winners for both wife Lizzie, Jennie Candlish and other yards. Danny McMenamin is a Jockey on an upward curve, improving on his winners tally each season, and is my tip as a Jockey to follow this Summer

The annual Trainers Challenge was won by Cartmel Trainer Jimmy Moffatt for the 7th time After relinquishing the Trophy the previous season, Jimmy made sure it was coming back to Pit Farm Stables, and had the title wrapped up before the final meeting Jimmy held a commanding lead ensuring that whatever happened on the last day of racing his lead he could not be passed With points given to first, second and third places in each race, he amassed an impressive 53, a huge 23 clear of his nearest rival Mickey Bowen. 2024 victor Ben Haslam was a point further away in third place. Ben has been have a very successful Flat campaign and will be looking to continue his good form here.

Local Trainers will be looking for success here this year Lizzie Quinlan will be looking to improve on last years tally, and hoping for another City Derby, who won an unheard of 4 races in 3 months here in 2024 Dianne Sayer is another local Trainer who rarely leaves a meeting empty handed Ther are always plenty in the winners enclosure celebrating when successful.

Other Trainers to look out for are the powerful Mickey Bowen yard, who always enjoys success here, and although they don’t have many runners no Trainer has had a better strike rate in the last few seasons here than Warren Greatrex He is definitely one to note especially in the early meetings.

A Trainer to follow this year could be Jennie Candlish. This shrewd stable often sends a number of runners North and when they do, usually go close. Her horses are in fine form at present, and will be looking for some early success over the May meetings.

Keep up to date on your favourite Jockey & Trainers’ standings with updated scores on the board near the weighing room each meeting. Jimmy Moffatt

Race Description The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles and six furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

THE HADWINS EBF MARES’ HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (CLASS 3)

Race Description This is a two miles and one furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares only which have been rated from 0 to 125. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

BETTING ADVICE - HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager.

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, by naming the horse and horse’s number Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct the bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms, Place Betting, not all on-course bookmakers accept each way bets, i.e. for a win or place

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the punter to his rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes e.g £1, £5 or £10, but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 125 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 120.

Race Description This is a two miles and one and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb

Race Description This three miles, one and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 125. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st 2lb so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage
