A very warm welcome to all of you joining us today; we plan, to give you excellent racing and a memorable musical experience.
If you are here for the first time, I hope you enjoy your day and will return in the future - and if you are a regular with us, thank you for your continued support. The variety of traders that make their way to Cartmel together with the on-course Bookmakers, some of whom we have been welcoming for years, is a valuable feature of this event.
Our thanks, as ever, go to those Owners and Trainers who have declared their horses to run today – their loyalty to Cartmel never goes unnoticed
Sponsorship and partnerships are very important to us, and help us to continue to invest in our race programme and racecourse improvements, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank :

HOW TO PLACE A BET
PLACE YOUR BETS....
Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.
BET IN TWO WAYS -
1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides
HOW TO READ
2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

ENJOY THE RACES IN SAFETY
A day at Cartmel Racecourse should be great fun for everyone; nobody wants an injury or an incident to spoil their day. So, when push comes to shove, we need to make sure that there isn’t any pushing or shoving
The racecourse team prepares carefully for each event and we take every precaution to ensure that the site is as safe as is practical. However, we also need some help from you – to take responsibility for your own safety and to respect the safety and comfort of those around you. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a brief list of precautions that we’d like all visitors to consider:
ALCOHOL & SUBSTANCE ABUSE
Fortunately very few accidents occur at Cartmel Racecourse, but those that do are most likely to be relatively minor incidents involving someone who has had too much to drink Quite simply: you’ll be safer if you drink less alcohol
On the rare occasion that we receive a customer complaint, it’s quite likely to be linked to the behaviour of someone who’s had one too many So please drink responsibly and encourage your friends to stay within their limits
Any incident involving substance abuse will be dealt with by Cumbria Police.
SLIPS, TRIPS, FALLS
parkland, that forms the racecourse, includes many uneven surfaces which may become slippery in wet conditions. Please take care of yourselves and mind where you walk. Don’t try to run faster than your legs can go, even if you think your bookmaker might be packing away for the day.
The most common cause for a visit to our medical tent is sunstroke… Okay, that’s only on hot days The most common cause, on a normal day, is a grazed knee Many of these incidents involve children aged under five years old or adults that have had one drink too many (see previous point about alcohol). Customers are reminded that the natural
FENCES, WALLS & BARRIERS
The fences, walls and temporary barriers located on the racecourse are intended to segregate people into specific areas. This may include segregating people from horses or people from sensitive or hazardous equipment Please do not attempt to climb over, sit on or stand on any barriers – regardless of whether they appear to be permanent or temporary features – they are not designed to take a person’s weight.
ENCLOSURES
We remain very happy that our visitors can travel between enclosures to experience all that Cartmel Racecourse has to offer However, these routes use the racing surface and we must always make sure that the
horses have fully left the track, before we open the gates to humans. Whilst we are sorry you may need to wait – please understand that any delays are due to us keeping you safe
RECYCLING
All of our waste is recycled at the waste depot so please feel free to use any bin.
TREES
The scenery at the racecourse is enhanced by beautiful trees, including some very old oaks However, despite clichés such as ‘strong as an oak’ it should be noted that all trees are capable of shedding branches with little warning While we inspect all the trees on the racecourse annually, we recommend that you do not sit beneath the branches. We especially ask that neither children, nor adults, swing or climb on the branches of trees within the parkland
PARKING
areas) and do not sit on or lean over barriers near to the horses. The running rails are designed to encourage the horses to stay on the track – but they will not withstand a horse’s weight if they hit them, nor a jockey’s if he is thrown over them – so be prepared to move if a horse is behaving erratically
VEHICLE MOVEMENT
Be aware of moving vehicles at all times. If you are driving a vehicle, please pay special attention to pedestrians.
BARBECUES
Every year the first aid team will treat at least one person with burnt fingers and we will be required to extinguish at least one fire in a wheelie bin. If you intend to bring a barbecue, please ensure that you handle it safely, take care not to scorch the grass and dispose of it in a metal bin – only when it is fully extinguished
Why do I need to pre-book parking now? This is a decision taken by the authorities out-with our control and what they are looking for is a record in advance of everyone who is driving a car on-site. Why is there less car parking on site now? Again, this has been mandated by the external authorities in order to maintain a safe distance between vehicles and pedestrians.
WATER
No gas barbecues or gas canisters are permitted on the racecourse
Please extinguish all BBQs 20 minutes before racing starts
CHILDREN
Children are naturally attracted by the water in the beck that meanders through the Paddock Enclosure For reasons that should be obvious, we recommend that children are supervised at all times. We also recommend that anyone paddling in the beck wears shoes or boots to protect their feet Animals use the beck upstream (and downstream), so please do not use the beck for washing up your picnic utensils, for drinking or for cleaning your hands.
HORSES
Whilst its brilliant to be up close to the racing action, we would appreciate you not allowing children to sit on the racetrack perimeter fence. Also – if you see any damage to racecourse fences, temporary structures or furniture we would appreciate you reporting this damage as soon as possible to a member of our stewarding team
ABANDONMENT
Horses are big and run very fast; hopefully yours will run fastest of all. Please pay attention when in close proximity to the horses: stay on the public side of any barriers (close to the track or horse walk
Abandonment refunds: Full refunds for general admission tickets will be given if racing is abandoned before the first race A 50% refund will be given if racing is abandoned before the third or featured race No cash refunds will be given on the day, but will be administered by post after the meeting Please retain your tickets as they will be required for your refund application Applications for refunds should be sent within one month of the fixture.
CARTMEL JOCKEYS’ CHALLENGE
an Equine Science Degree, joining the Moffatt yard on work experience in 2015
The skills in the saddle soon became clear, with race rides and winners following soon after.
Charlotte quickly became popular with the crowds, with her victories always having the biggest numbers around the Winners
What drama we had to conclude our Whit Wednesday meeting No sooner had Zumbi crossed the line in front to finish the 3 day meeting, winning rider Charlotte Jones announced her retirement
It goes without saying that Charlotte has been a favourite here, striking up a formidable partnership with Cartmel Trainer Jimmy Moffatt. Charlotte is from Barrow, and despite not having a racing background, has
Enclosure Not many of our days racing went by without a success. In total Charlotte rode 86 winners, including 38 here, and has had multiple Top Season Jockey Challenge wins
Highlights have included riding a Double at Aintree and riding 5 consecutive winners in 2024 Her association with favourites like Jelski, Native Fighter and Secret Secret will always be fondly remembered
Charlotte had her first ride, first winner, rode out her claim, and of course final ride at Cartmel It is fair to say that Cartmel won’t be the same without her, and we wish Charlotte the very best for the future

CARTMEL TRAINERS’ CHALLENGE
The lead changed hands again in the Trainer Challenge with Jimmy Moffatt regsining top spot Jimmy had a number of placed runners throughout the evening, then in the concluding JJ Sundowners Handicap Chase the Charlotte Jones ridden Zumbi came home for a comfortable win.
In second place Mickey Bowen is 3 points behind His victory came in the Birchall Trust Novices Trust Handicap, when the favourite Off The Jury got up close home under a strong James Bowen drive. These two Trainers have put a bit of distance between themselves the others It will fascinating to see who stays ahead throughout the season. We had another tight finish in the Join Rebecca Menzies Racing Club Handicap when Kingofthegame landed the spoils with a fine Ryan Mania ride Winning Trainer Martin Todhunter has long been a supporter of Cartmel and this was the Penrith handlers 22nd course win.
The jennie Candlish/Alan O’Keefe yard are always to be respected when sending runners here. They didn’t leave empty handed when Dickens landed the Traffic Management Handicap The winner was successful here last Summer, and was victorious despite a long time off the track. Their runners are worth noing for the rest of the season

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager.
2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, by naming the horse and horse’s number Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct the bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.
3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.
4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms, Place Betting, not all on-course bookmakers accept each way bets, i.e. for a win or place
5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the punter to his rights
6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes e.g. £1, £5 or £10, but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

Race Description This is a two miles, six furlongs and 31 yards handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Race Description This is a three miles, one furlong and 107 yards handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 120 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 115.

Race Description This is a two miles, five furlongs and 34 yards handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

PLAY SMARTER
ZUMBI had something up his sleeve when gaining a first win over fences here last time and with that form having been franked, he is fancied to make light of an 8lb rise in the weights given he’s still well treated on old form. Out On Her Own appeals as the main danger, especially if more positive tactics are readopted, while Irish raider Blue Reed is another to consider

BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE
Race Description This two miles, one furlong and 46 yards handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 110. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

GOODWIN FACE is a rare Cartmel runner for the Chris Gordon yard and looks the type to relish the idiosyncrasies of the track. He’s preferred to the James Moffatt pair, with Book of Secrets particularly interesting if recapturing last summer’s course form.
PARKING
Why do I need to pre-book parking now? This is a decision taken by the authorities out-with our control and what they are looking for is a record in advance of everyone who is driving a car on-site. Why is there less car parking on site now? Again, this has been mandated by the external authorities in order to maintain a safe distance between vehicles and pedestrians.
