Cartmel Steeplechases, Cartmel Racecourse, Cartmel, Grange-Over-Sands, Cumbria, LA11 6QF Tel: 015395 36340

WELCOME

It is exactly 170 years since racing started at Cartmel! Did you know, those initial races were run on the flat? – I am sure our Course Inspector would have something to say about that now!

Welcome to you all and thank you for choosing to spend your Bank Holiday with us. Your support is always appreciated by the Cartmel team, myself and my family.

You may notice that we are hosting a special race today: The Veterans Race I have long considered that Veterans races are part of the roadmap of Cartmel I am touched that the Team have named the Race in my honour from this year, maybe I shall be allowed to ring the bell today!

Heartfelt thanks to the Owners who are supporting our race programme today, and to the Trainers who target races in our programme each Season

Our very welcome Sponsors today are :

Hadwins Motor Group

RF Miller & Co

Molson Coors

And the family of Johnny and Tony Connell

Our Charity today is Warrior Down – a local organisation doing great things for those in need “Harnessing the strength of lived experience to promote healing, resilience and recovery by fostering compassionate communities.”

All that remains for me to say is ‘Good Luck!

HOW TO PLACE A BET

PLACE YOUR BETS....

Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.

BET IN TWO WAYS -

1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides

HOW TO READ

2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

Cartmel Racecourse

ENJOY THE RACES IN SAFETY

A day at Cartmel Racecourse should be great fun for everyone; nobody wants an injury or an incident to spoil their day. So, when push comes to shove, we need to make sure that there isn’t any pushing or shoving

The racecourse team prepares carefully for each event and we take every precaution to ensure that the site is as safe as is practical. However, we also need some help from you – to take responsibility for your own safety and to respect the safety and comfort of those around you. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a brief list of precautions that we’d like all visitors to consider:

ALCOHOL & SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Fortunately very few accidents occur at Cartmel Racecourse, but those that do are most likely to be relatively minor incidents involving someone who has had too much to drink Quite simply: you’ll be safer if you drink less alcohol

On the rare occasion that we receive a customer complaint, it’s quite likely to be linked to the behaviour of someone who’s had one too many So please drink responsibly and encourage your friends to stay within their limits

Any incident involving substance abuse will be dealt with by Cumbria Police.

SLIPS, TRIPS, FALLS

parkland, that forms the racecourse, includes many uneven surfaces which may become slippery in wet conditions. Please take care of yourselves and mind where you walk. Don’t try to run faster than your legs can go, even if you think your bookmaker might be packing away for the day.

The most common cause for a visit to our medical tent is sunstroke… Okay, that’s only on hot days The most common cause, on a normal day, is a grazed knee Many of these incidents involve children aged under five years old or adults that have had one drink too many (see previous point about alcohol). Customers are reminded that the natural

FENCES, WALLS & BARRIERS

The fences, walls and temporary barriers located on the racecourse are intended to segregate people into specific areas. This may include segregating people from horses or people from sensitive or hazardous equipment Please do not attempt to climb over, sit on or stand on any barriers – regardless of whether they appear to be permanent or temporary features – they are not designed to take a person’s weight.

ENCLOSURES

We remain very happy that our visitors can travel between enclosures to experience all that Cartmel Racecourse has to offer However, these routes use the racing surface and we must always make sure that the

horses have fully left the track, before we open the gates to humans. Whilst we are sorry you may need to wait – please understand that any delays are due to us keeping you safe

RECYCLING

All of our waste is recycled at the waste depot so please feel free to use any bin.

TREES

The scenery at the racecourse is enhanced by beautiful trees, including some very old oaks However, despite clichés such as ‘strong as an oak’ it should be noted that all trees are capable of shedding branches with little warning While we inspect all the trees on the racecourse annually, we recommend that you do not sit beneath the branches. We especially ask that neither children, nor adults, swing or climb on the branches of trees within the parkland

PARKING

areas) and do not sit on or lean over barriers near to the horses. The running rails are designed to encourage the horses to stay on the track – but they will not withstand a horse’s weight if they hit them, nor a jockey’s if he is thrown over them – so be prepared to move if a horse is behaving erratically

VEHICLE MOVEMENT

Be aware of moving vehicles at all times. If you are driving a vehicle, please pay special attention to pedestrians.

BARBECUES

Every year the first aid team will treat at least one person with burnt fingers and we will be required to extinguish at least one fire in a wheelie bin. If you intend to bring a barbecue, please ensure that you handle it safely, take care not to scorch the grass and dispose of it in a metal bin – only when it is fully extinguished

Why do I need to pre-book parking now? This is a decision taken by the authorities out-with our control and what they are looking for is a record in advance of everyone who is driving a car on-site. Why is there less car parking on site now? Again, this has been mandated by the external authorities in order to maintain a safe distance between vehicles and pedestrians.

WATER

No gas barbecues or gas canisters are permitted on the racecourse

Please extinguish all BBQs 20 minutes before racing starts

CHILDREN

Children are naturally attracted by the water in the beck that meanders through the Paddock Enclosure For reasons that should be obvious, we recommend that children are supervised at all times. We also recommend that anyone paddling in the beck wears shoes or boots to protect their feet Animals use the beck upstream (and downstream), so please do not use the beck for washing up your picnic utensils, for drinking or for cleaning your hands.

HORSES

Whilst its brilliant to be up close to the racing action, we would appreciate you not allowing children to sit on the racetrack perimeter fence. Also – if you see any damage to racecourse fences, temporary structures or furniture we would appreciate you reporting this damage as soon as possible to a member of our stewarding team

ABANDONMENT

Horses are big and run very fast; hopefully yours will run fastest of all. Please pay attention when in close proximity to the horses: stay on the public side of any barriers (close to the track or horse walk

Abandonment refunds: Full refunds for general admission tickets will be given if racing is abandoned before the first race A 50% refund will be given if racing is abandoned before the third or featured race No cash refunds will be given on the day, but will be administered by post after the meeting Please retain your tickets as they will be required for your refund application Applications for refunds should be sent within one month of the fixture.

number of strong looking rides today, and likely to collect more Sticky Toffee pudding.

Our season long Jockeys Challenge started with some familiar names heading the leaderboard

Top spot goes to Harry Skelton, who rode 2 winners from his 3 rides, firstly as the only finisher in the William Hill Handicap Hurdle for brother Dan, then quickly following up on the Olly Greenall and Josh Guerriero trained Ki Woo in the RF Miller Handicap Steeplechase Harry has a

We were pleased that Cartmel regular Leah Noreci was on the scoresheet with 5 points to share second place. Leah rode her first winner at Cartmel, and rode as superbly timed race to land the Hadwins Mares Handicap Hurdle on the well backed My Chiquita A double was almost landed later in the card, with Leah showing she is well worth her claim and a Jockey to follow

Sharing second is Charlotte Jones, who also rode a winner for Jimmy Moffatt in the Molson Coors Handicap on Halfway House Last years Cartmel Champion Jockey will be out to retain her title, with her wins here always popular.

CARTMEL TRAINERS’ CHALLENGE

Cartmel Trainer Jimmy Moffatt made a flying start to this years Challenge, surging into a clear lead with a 10 point haul. The 7 time winner had a Double and 2 places to see him in a familiar position at the top of the leaderboard Jimmys first winner was in the Hadwins Mares Handicap Hurdle with My Chiquita, then Halfway House Lad continued his winning form when holding on in the Molson Coors Handicap to the delight of the local stables followers

Ayrshire Trainer Ian Duncan has decent record at Cartmel from a small number of runners. His Tread Softly Now was an impressive winner of the PSR Marquees Handicap under a fine Ryan Mania ride, staying on well to land the spoils on Ians only runner on the card

The concluding St Marys Hospice Handicap saw the most exciting finish of the day when Imperial Rule won on the line for Cumbria Trainer Lizzie Quinlan Husband Sean was in the saddle, with a power packed drive to get up in the shadows of the post Lizzie is a Trainer to follow with plenty of success in the last few years here

This particular two mile and one furlong novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races

IAMYOUARE left previous efforts behind when a dominant winner of a Hereford handicap just under 6 weeks ago and now switched to novice company, Donald McCain’s 6-y-o may prove tough to stop if the drop in trip doesn’t catch her out. Heading up the list of dangers is Hidden Fortune, who represents the powerful Skelton team and was impressive in making a winning hurdling debut at Fontwell earlier in the month. Mighty Fleur can fill out third.

Race Description This is a two mile and six furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Race Description This is a three mile, one and a half furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races

Race Description This is a three mile, five and a half handicap steeple chase for ten-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

He can add a fourth course victory to his tally at the expense of My Bobby Dazzler, who refused to line up at Aintree recently but would be a danger to all provided he keeps his quirks in check.

BETTING ADVICE - HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, by naming the horse and horse’s number. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct the bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms, Place Betting, not all on-course bookmakers accept each way bets, i.e. for a win or place

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the punter to his rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes e.g £1, £5 or £10, but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

Race Description This is a two mile, one and a half furlong handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb

RACE

Race Description This two miles and five furlongs handicap steeple chase has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 135. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

Leading course trainer (20-25): B Haslam (21 wins from 115 runners, 18%) runs ARTHUR’S QUAY

CHILDREN

Whilst its brilliant to be up close to the racing action, we would appreciate you not allowing children to sit on the racetrack perimeter fence. Also – if you see any damage to racecourse fences, temporary structures or furniture we would appreciate you reporting this damage as soon as possible to a member of our stewarding team

BROKEN GLASSES AND BOTTLES

In the interest of safety and for the comfort of others, we’d be grateful if all customers could refrain from carrying drinks through the enclosures where they may spill or cause injury to other racegoers. No drinks should be brought across the track at the crossing points between the Course and Paddock Enclosures and no drinks should be taken on to the steps or viewing areas of the Grandstand Thank you for your cooperation.
