UNDER THE RULES OF RACING

Cartmel Steeplechases, Cartmel Racecourse, Cartmel, Grange-Over-Sands, Cumbria, LA11 6QF Tel: 015395 36340

WELCOME

May I extend a very warm welcome to you and thank you for joining us.

This race day is traditionally the day we host many local businesses – but of course in a Cartmel style! Thank you to everyone who has taken places in our restaurants and other hospitality areas

Partnerships and sponsorships help us to develop and maintain our race programme, and we remain very grateful for this continuing support. Today’s sponsors are

Furness Building Society

Cumbria Grand Hotel

Molson Coors

Weatherby’s Design & Print

Thanks also to our regular sponsors this year

RF Miller & Co

Hadwins

We are also delighted to welcome members of Racing TV to the course, a benefit of the annual subscription is visits to racecourses and this is the second day here at Cartmel for the members.

All that remains is for me to wish you ‘Good Luck’

HOW TO PLACE A BET

PLACE YOUR BETS....

Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.

BET IN TWO WAYS -

1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides

HOW TO READ

2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

ENJOY THE RACES IN SAFETY

A day at Cartmel Racecourse should be great fun for everyone; nobody wants an injury or an incident to spoil their day. So, when push comes to shove, we need to make sure that there isn’t any pushing or shoving

The racecourse team prepares carefully for each event and we take every precaution to ensure that the site is as safe as is practical. However, we also need some help from you – to take responsibility for your own safety and to respect the safety and comfort of those around you. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a brief list of precautions that we’d like all visitors to consider:

ALCOHOL & SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Fortunately very few accidents occur at Cartmel Racecourse, but those that do are most likely to be relatively minor incidents involving someone who has had too much to drink. Quite simply: you’ll be safer if you drink less alcohol

On the rare occasion that we receive a customer complaint, it’s quite likely to be linked to the behaviour of someone who’s had one too many So please drink responsibly and encourage your friends to stay within their limits. Any incident involving substance abuse will be dealt with by Cumbria Police

SLIPS, TRIPS, FALLS

parkland, that forms the racecourse, includes many uneven surfaces which may become slippery in wet conditions. Please take care of yourselves and mind where you walk. Don’t try to run faster than your legs can go, even if you think your bookmaker might be packing away for the day.

The most common cause for a visit to our medical tent is sunstroke… Okay, that’s only on hot days. The most common cause, on a normal day, is a grazed knee Many of these incidents involve children aged under five years old or adults that have had one drink too many (see previous point about alcohol). Customers are reminded that the natural

FENCES, WALLS & BARRIERS

The fences, walls and temporary barriers located on the racecourse are intended to segregate people into specific areas This may include segregating people from horses or people from sensitive or hazardous equipment Please do not attempt to climb over, sit on or stand on any barriers – regardless of whether they appear to be permanent or temporary features – they are not designed to take a person’s weight.

ENCLOSURES

We remain very happy that our visitors can travel between enclosures to experience all that Cartmel Racecourse has to offer. However, these routes use the racing surface and we must always make sure that the

horses have fully left thetrack, before we openthe gates to humans. Whilst we are sorry you may need to wait– please understandthat any delays are due to us keeping you safe.

RECYCLING

All of our wasteis recycledat the waste depot sopleasefeel free to use any bin.

TREES

The sceneryatthe racecourseis enhanced by beautifultrees, includingsome very old oaks However, despite clichés such as ‘strong asan oak’ it shouldbenotedthat all treesare capable ofshedding branches with little warning. While we inspect all thetrees on the racecourse annually, we recommend that you do not sit beneaththe branches. We especially ask that neither children, nor adults, swing or climb on the branchesof trees within the parkland.

PARKING

areas) and do not sit onorlean over barriers near to the horses. The running rails are designed to encourage the horses to stayon thetrack– butthey will not withstanda horse’s weight if they hitthem, nor a jockey’s if he isthrown overthem – sobe prepared to move if a horseis behavingerratically.

VEHICLE MOVEMENT

Be aware of moving vehicles at alltimes. If you are driving a vehicle, please pay special attention to pedestrians.

BARBECUES

Every year the firstaid team will treatat least one person with burnt fingers and we will be required to extinguish at least one fire in a wheelie bin. If you intend to bringa barbecue, pleaseensurethat you handle it safely, take care not to scorch the grass and dispose of it in a metal bin– only when itis fully extinguished.

Why do I need to pre-book parking now? Thisisa decision taken by the authorities out-with our control and whatthey are looking forisa record in advance of everyone who is driving a car on-site. Whyis there less car parking on site now? Again, this has been mandated by the external authoritiesin order to maintain a safe distance between vehicles and pedestrians.

WATER

Childrenare naturally attracted by the water in the beck that meandersthrough the Paddock Enclosure For reasonsthat should be obvious, we recommend that childrenare supervisedat all times. We also recommend that anyonepaddlinginthe beck wears shoes or boots to protecttheir feet. Animalsuse the beck upstream (and downstream), so please donot use the beck for washing up your picnic utensils, for drinking or for cleaning yourhands.

HORSES

No gas barbecues or gas canisters are permitted on the racecourse. Please extinguishall BBQs 20 minutes before racingstarts.

CHILDREN

Whilst its brilliant to be up close to the racing action, wewould appreciate you not allowing children to sit on the racetrack perimeter fence. Also – if you seeany damage to racecourse fences, temporary structures or furniture we would appreciate you reporting this damage as soon as possible to a member of our stewarding team.

ABANDONMENT

Horses are big andrun very fast; hopefully yours willrun fastest of all. Please pay attentionwhen in close proximity to the horses: stay on the publicside of any barriers (close to thetrack or horse walk

Abandonmentrefunds: Full refundsfor general admission tickets will be given if racing is abandoned before the first race.A 50% refund will begiven if racingis abandoned before thethird or featured race. No cash refunds will be given on the day, but will be administered by post after the meeting Please retain your tickets as they will be required for your refund application Applicationsfor refunds should be sent within one month of the fixture.

JOCKEYS’ & TRAINERS’ CHALLENGES 2026

CARTMEL JOCKEYS’ CHALLENGE

Prestigious Cartmel Cup. Brian missed the first part of the season through injury but is back riding as well as ever, and closing in on 2000 career winners

The big mover in the Jockeys Challenge on Saturday was Brian Hughes The 3 time National Hunt Champion Jockey was in fine form with a Double and move up to 3rd position The first of Brians successes came on the Jimmy Moffatt trained Alvesta in the Cartmel Novices Handicap Hurdle There was sense of Deja Vu for Brians second win when he won for same Owner/Trainer/Jockey combination an hour later on the ever popular Caughtinyourtrance in the

The RF Miller and Co Female Jockeys Handicap is always a highlight in our calander. We witnessed a tremendous finish with Isabelle Ryder driving home Secret Force to get up close home As well as the valuable prize money for the race, the winning Jockey also receives some jewellery courtesy of Cartmel Isabelle was given a Tiffany Necklace, which was very well received

Popular rider Sean Quinlan moved up to share of second place when landing the concluding Charnleys Home and Garden Centre Handicap on the equally popular Sean Og This was another close finish with the local winner sending his supporters home happy

CARTMEL TRAINERS’ CHALLENGE

Cartmel Trainer Jimmy Moffatt extended his lead at the top off the table to a massive 17 points on Saturday with 2 winners other placed runners The winners for both same ownership of Tyson Furys manager Spencer Brown and Stephen Sankey The first Alvesta, was smooth winner of the Cartmel Novices Handicap, and followed soon after when Caughtinyourtrance showed switching between Hurdling and Chasing was no problem with a popular victory in the Crystal Cup. Jimmy has won the Challenge a record 7 times and long odds on the make it an 8th success.

Cumbria Trainer Dianne Sayers winners are always well received, and after some near misses landed the Charnleys Home and Garden Centre Handicap with Sean Og The victor was winning his 5th race at Cartmel and on his way to try and emulate the great Tontos Spirit who holds the record for course victories

Sam England is in fine form and her Jeteye won the Sun Racing Summer Jumping Championship Handicap under an inspired ride from husband Jonathan There were 4 runners with chances close home and Jeteyes finish was timed just right to be in front where it mattered Sam is enjoying a good season and is always one to follow with her runners here

Race Description The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two mile and one furlong race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

Race Description This is a two mile and six furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

A Cherished Friend of Cartmel

Everyone at Cartmel Racecourse extends their warmest congratulations to John Calvert on his 90th birthday, celebrating his rich history with the track and his enduring passion for racing.

John is fondly remembered for owning— alongside Margaret Faragher—the legendary, five-time Cartmel winner Debs Ball, brilliantly trained by Dudley Moffatt and ridden by Jimmy Moffatt. In addition to this local racing great, John also enjoyed success as the owner of multiple-race winner Priceoflove.

Beyond his colours, John was a tremendous advocate and sponsor of the racecourse during the 1990s, even hosting a dedicated “John Calvert Race Day.” Though he stepped away from the sport for a time to focus on his family, the former insurance broker is now a staple at the track once again.

John can frequently be seen enjoying the racedays at Cartmel alongside his good friend Darren Naylor Darren, along with all of John’s friends in the racing community, joins Cartmel Racecourse in wishing him the absolute best on this truly special milestone.

Race Description This is the second division of Race 2. Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for To avoid horses being denied a run, which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority allows the race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.

HORSERACE BETTING LEVY BOARD

The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has allocated £77.1m in prize money for 2026.

Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry

for three yrs old and upwards Total prize fund £6550

Owners Prize Money. 1st £2646, 2nd £1322, 3rd £662, 4th £331, 5th £165. (Penalty Value £3459.05)

Race Description This is a two mile and one furlong handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

Race Description This is a three mile, one and a half furlong handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

BETTING ADVICE - HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager.

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, by naming the horse and horse’s number. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct the bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms, Place Betting, not all on-course bookmakers accept each way bets, i.e. for a win or place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the punter to his rights

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes e.g. £1, £5 or £10, but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

Race preview from Weatherbys

It is an absolute pleasure to be sponsoring the WeatherbysDesign & Print Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase at Cartmel this afternoon, a Class3eventwithatightlymatched fieldoffiveheadingtopost.

The Danish-bred Dunkerque tops the weights for Jennie Candlish, a winner on the Flat for Soren Jensen andlastsummerwinningamaiden hurdle at Ballinrobe for Gavin Cromwell. The six-year-old has proven mightily progressive for his newtrainer, winninghislastfourina row and in the form of his life as he chases the five-timer here. Raised just 3lbs for a comfortable success at Newton Abbot last time, he is triedinfirst-timecheekpiecesashe dropsbackintrip.

Krak was below par when well beaten on his last run at Newton Abbot, however that was his stable debutandfirstrunafterwindsurgery so improvement can be expected here by Dan Skelton’s new recruit. The yard remains in tremendous form and the Muhtathir six-yearoldisbeginningtolookwell-treated fromaslidinghandicapmark.

Kientzheim is the sole mare in the field and should step forward from her chasing debut at Hexham last

time. Ben Haslam’s six-year-old is a useful hurdler, winning nicely at Musselburgh in November from a mark of 115, and has more to come over the larger obstacles. She is a half-sister to William Hill Hurdle winner Joyeuse whilst the dam is a half-sister to Champion Hurdler Epatante, so the pedigree suggests she can continue developing into a smartmare.

Both Heart Above and Passing Diamond make their chasing debut here and they sneak in right at the foot of the weights and carry a featherweight. The former, trained by Dianne Sayer, has been below form the last twice here at Cartmel but has won three times at Kelso in handicap hurdles in the past year. He must run from 3lbs out of the handicap but does appeal as the type to make a better chaser. Passing Diamond is 4lbs out of the handicap for Ben Haslam, with Richie McLernon taking the ride. The six-year-oldhasprovenprogressive sincearrivingattheyardinFebruary, winning twice at Hexham in May before a third at the same track last time. Twice a winner between the flags for David O’Brien, that experiencecouldprovevaluableon chasingbow.

RaceDescription Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October This particular two mile, one and a half furlongs novices’ steeple chase is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two steeple chases.

Race Description This two mile and five furlongs handicap steeple chase has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.
