Welcome to Wednesday racing – a day that is all about the racing
It is our opportunity today to enjoy a full card of Summer Jumps with real racing afficionados, and so it is my pleasure to see :
Racing TV guests enjoying one of their ‘Club’ days Annual Members – as always Cartmel Village Neighbours
Not to mention those of you who have made a real effort to join us – if this is your first visit, I do hope you enjoy it
Owners are, of course, an essential part of the industry and very important to us – declaring your horses to run here is very much appreciated.
If you are of a mind to have a “flutter”, please consider approaching our on-course Bookmakers, which in itself is something of an experience; even if you feel you know nothing about betting, I believe you will find them friendly and helpful
Our much-valued sponsors today are:
William Hill
The Traffic Management Company
The Family of Jimmy Latham
JJ Crossfield’s
Today the Charity is The Birchall Trust, a local and entirely volunteer based organisation offering counselling and support for victims of abuse I regard them as being a highly deserving organisation
May I please take this opportunity to remind you of our racing and music night, coming up next on Friday 26th June The Kaiser Chiefs are playing after racing, and I am looking forward to hearing their music echoing down this beautiful valley
Enjoy your race day!

HOW TO PLACE A BET
PLACE YOUR BETS....
Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.
BET IN TWO WAYS -
1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides
HOW TO READ
2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

Cartmel Racecourse
ENJOY THE RACES IN SAFETY
A day at Cartmel Racecourse should be great fun for everyone; nobody wants an injury or an incident to spoil their day. So, when push comes to shove, we need to make sure that there isn’t any pushing or shoving
The racecourse team prepares carefully for each event and we take every precaution to ensure that the site is as safe as is practical. However, we also need some help from you – to take responsibility for your own safety and to respect the safety and comfort of those around you. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a brief list of precautions that we’d like all visitors to consider:
ALCOHOL & SUBSTANCE ABUSE
Fortunately very few accidents occur at Cartmel Racecourse, but those that do are most likely to be relatively minor incidents involving someone who has had too much to drink Quite simply: you’ll be safer if you drink less alcohol
On the rare occasion that we receive a customer complaint, it’s quite likely to be linked to the behaviour of someone who’s had one too many So please drink responsibly and encourage your friends to stay within their limits
Any incident involving substance abuse will be dealt with by Cumbria Police.
SLIPS, TRIPS, FALLS
parkland, that forms the racecourse, includes many uneven surfaces which may become slippery in wet conditions. Please take care of yourselves and mind where you walk. Don’t try to run faster than your legs can go, even if you think your bookmaker might be packing away for the day.
The most common cause for a visit to our medical tent is sunstroke… Okay, that’s only on hot days The most common cause, on a normal day, is a grazed knee Many of these incidents involve children aged under five years old or adults that have had one drink too many (see previous point about alcohol). Customers are reminded that the natural
FENCES, WALLS & BARRIERS
The fences, walls and temporary barriers located on the racecourse are intended to segregate people into specific areas. This may include segregating people from horses or people from sensitive or hazardous equipment Please do not attempt to climb over, sit on or stand on any barriers – regardless of whether they appear to be permanent or temporary features – they are not designed to take a person’s weight.
ENCLOSURES
We remain very happy that our visitors can travel between enclosures to experience all that Cartmel Racecourse has to offer However, these routes use the racing surface and we must always make sure that the
horses have fully left the track, before we open the gates to humans. Whilst we are sorry you may need to wait – please understand that any delays are due to us keeping you safe
RECYCLING
All of our waste is recycled at the waste depot so please feel free to use any bin.
TREES
The scenery at the racecourse is enhanced by beautiful trees, including some very old oaks However, despite clichés such as ‘strong as an oak’ it should be noted that all trees are capable of shedding branches with little warning While we inspect all the trees on the racecourse annually, we recommend that you do not sit beneath the branches. We especially ask that neither children, nor adults, swing or climb on the branches of trees within the parkland
PARKING
areas) and do not sit on or lean over barriers near to the horses. The running rails are designed to encourage the horses to stay on the track – but they will not withstand a horse’s weight if they hit them, nor a jockey’s if he is thrown over them – so be prepared to move if a horse is behaving erratically
VEHICLE MOVEMENT
Be aware of moving vehicles at all times. If you are driving a vehicle, please pay special attention to pedestrians.
BARBECUES
Every year the first aid team will treat at least one person with burnt fingers and we will be required to extinguish at least one fire in a wheelie bin. If you intend to bring a barbecue, please ensure that you handle it safely, take care not to scorch the grass and dispose of it in a metal bin – only when it is fully extinguished
Why do I need to pre-book parking now? This is a decision taken by the authorities out-with our control and what they are looking for is a record in advance of everyone who is driving a car on-site. Why is there less car parking on site now? Again, this has been mandated by the external authorities in order to maintain a safe distance between vehicles and pedestrians.
WATER
No gas barbecues or gas canisters are permitted on the racecourse
Please extinguish all BBQs 20 minutes before racing starts
CHILDREN
Children are naturally attracted by the water in the beck that meanders through the Paddock Enclosure For reasons that should be obvious, we recommend that children are supervised at all times. We also recommend that anyone paddling in the beck wears shoes or boots to protect their feet Animals use the beck upstream (and downstream), so please do not use the beck for washing up your picnic utensils, for drinking or for cleaning your hands.
HORSES
Whilst its brilliant to be up close to the racing action, we would appreciate you not allowing children to sit on the racetrack perimeter fence. Also – if you see any damage to racecourse fences, temporary structures or furniture we would appreciate you reporting this damage as soon as possible to a member of our stewarding team
ABANDONMENT
Horses are big and run very fast; hopefully yours will run fastest of all. Please pay attention when in close proximity to the horses: stay on the public side of any barriers (close to the track or horse walk
Abandonment refunds: Full refunds for general admission tickets will be given if racing is abandoned before the first race A 50% refund will be given if racing is abandoned before the third or featured race No cash refunds will be given on the day, but will be administered by post after the meeting Please retain your tickets as they will be required for your refund application Applications for refunds should be sent within one month of the fixture.
CARTMEL JOCKEYS’ CHALLENGE
Sean Bowen and Mighty Fleur
We have the current Champion and former Champion sharing the lead in the Cartmel Jockeys Challenge after Mondays racing Sean Bowen had his usual busy afternoon with 6 rides, and rarely leaves Cartmel without a winner which came in our opening Hadwins Mares Novices Hurdle on Mighty Fleur. Plenty of other placed horses saw Sean climb from 5th up to the top.
had 3 winners and a second from these His winner yesterday was on Tranquil Sea in the valuable RF Miller Handicap trained by brother Dan After looking to be challenged turning for home, enough was kept in reserve to kick on and win by 6 lengths.
Sharing the lead is Harry Skelton, who has had only 5 rides over the 2 meetings, but has
Sean Quinlan was the big mover. Sean rode a double firstly on Evenwood Sonofagun for wife Lizzie in the Johnny and Tony Connell Handicap and then an equally popular success on Sean Og in the concluding Warrior Down Handicap Sean rides Cartmel so well and will be challenging for the top spot come the end of the season
James Murray made his first visit here a successful one when partnering Stratagem to victory in the historic Hugh Cavendish Veterans Chase This was only his 4th ride in the UK and after 1 winner in Ireland was his first here Congratulations to James with many more sure to follow judging by the stylish victory.

CARTMEL TRAINERS’ CHALLENGE
The lead has changed hands after a bumper day for Haverfordwest Trainer Mickey Bowen. The 9 point haul was started in the opening Hadwins Mares Hurdle with Mighty Fleur, and a double landed with Stratagem in the Hugh Cavendish Veterans Chase A number of places added to the score to finish the day with a slender one point advantage from Jimmy Moffatt. Jimmy had a quiet day in number of runners, but has many entered this evening to look to regain top spot
There were 2 popular successes for Cumbrian Trainers Lizzie Quinlan’s Evenwood Sonofagun landed the Johnny and Tony Connell Handicap for the second year in succession in comfortable fashion That is 3 winners from Lizzie’s last 5 runners to the delight of her followers
There are always happy scenes in the Winners Enclosure when Dianne Sayer has a winner We witnessed these when the ever popular Sean Og landed the concluding Warrior Down Handicap This was his 4th win here, and finished the hot afternoon off on a high note for followers
Micky Hammond has made a good start to the current Jumps season Coup De Coeur was his 5th winner in the last few weeks, and never looked in danger of not landing the Molson Coors Handicap under a lovely Connor O’Farrell ride He will likely be back for more spoils during the summer here.

Race Description The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles and one furlong race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

Race Description This is a two miles and one furlong handicap hurdle selling race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. Selling races exist as an outlet for connections to sell their horses Any horse that wins a ‘seller’ such as this is automatically put up for public auction in the Winners’ Enclosure at the end of the race and goes to the highest bidder The auction is often well worth seeing, so make sure to head that way after the race

BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE
Race Description This is a two miles and six furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

Race Description This is a three miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

PLAY SMARTER
EVENWOOD SONOFAGUN landed a gamble with the minimum of fuss here on Monday and while this trip is a slight unknown, he’s taken to repeat last spring’s exploits with a quick Cartmel double. Ebselysees is an in-form rival, while it will be interesting to see whether Jack Sprat is backed starting out for Jimmy Moffatt.
CHILDREN
Whilst its brilliant to be up close to the racing action, we would appreciate you not allowing children to sit on the racetrack perimeter fence. Also – if you see any damage to racecourse fences, temporary structures or furniture we would appreciate you reporting this damage as soon as possible to a member of our stewarding team
ENCLOSURES
We remain very happy that our visitors can travel between enclosures to experience all that Cartmel Racecourse has to offer. However, these routes use the racing surface and we must always make sure that the horses have fully left the track, before we open the gates to humans. Whilst we are sorry you may need to wait – please understand that any delays are due to us keeping you safe.
Race Description Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October This particular two miles and five furlongs novices’ steeple chase is for horses aged five-years-old and upwards.

CAUGHTINYOURTRANCE highlighted a race of this nature is well within reach when second here on Saturday and with the drop back in trip holding no fears, he’s expected to make a bold bid with his yard going well. Off The Jury was expensive to follow over hurdles but tasted success on his only start in points and looks a bigger danger than Hostile Hotelier.
It is a condition of entry to this Racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets in the course of their business. Any individual found contravening these conditions will be evicted.

BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE
Race Description This is a two miles and one furlong handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100.

PARKING
Why do I need to pre-book parking now? This is a decision taken by the authorities out-with our control and what they are looking for is a record in advance of everyone who is driving a car on-site. Why is there less car parking on site now? Again, this has been mandated by the external authorities in order to maintain a safe distance between vehicles and pedestrians.
