May I welcome you to the fabulous 2024 Season Finale – how quickly the Summer passes each year Given that the Cumbrian weather has not been kind to racegoers this year, all of us at the Racecourse are especially grateful for your continuing loyal support.
My thanks go to those Owners and Trainers who have declared runners today – your participation is so much appreciated and contributes directly to our race programme I am looking forward to seeing the final rankings on the Cartmel Challenges this year
Our Sponsors today are Sticky Toffee Pudding, EWGA, Richard Fleming & Family, Molson Coors and Wicks Some of them are regular supporters and we count ourselves very lucky to work each year with such wonderful sponsors.
Our final Charity of the 2024 Season are the British Racehorse Retraining Centre – a very important organisation looking after many equine stars after their time on the track comes to an end. Please do visit their stand if you can on the Paddock side
After today, we lose no time in laying plans for next year, when I hope we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back to Cartmel once more. If you have any feedback at all you would like to share, then please complete one of the surveys which will be distributed over the next few weeks.
I wish you all a wonderful day and, on behalf of the whole team, thank you.
Until May 2025,
Lord Cavendish, Chairman
Cartmel Steeplechases (Holker) Ltd
Close behind is Sean Bowen. After winning our opening Hadwins Mares’ Novices Hurdle Sean was unable to add any more winners, but has 5 booked rides today and will be hoping to regain top spot
As we enter the final day’s racing in our season everything is still to play for in the Jockeys’ Challenge We have a new name in first place after a superb double and a third place last Saturday saw Sean Quinlan go to the top of the leaderboard
His first win on City Derby in the AF Connell Handicap Hurdle was the horse’s fourth success at Cartmel this season, with this association contributing 14 points to his tally. There may be more to come with City Derby declared to run this afternoon A quick double was landed when Sean won our next race on Restandbethankful, again trained by wife Lizzie, in the PSR Marquees Handicap This was a perfectly judged ride seeing off all challengers.
It was big day for Oscar Palmer His win on Miss Fedora in the Cartmel Peninsula Holiday Food Boxes Hurdle was only the second of his young career, and on his first ride at Cartmel This was a beautifully timed run to lead close home, and will be many more to come Sean Quinlan holds a 3 point lead going into our final day, but with many fancied rides for our leaders there could be plenty of change throughout the afternoon

Sean Quinlan
TRAINER
CARTMEL TRAINERS’ CHALLENGE
It is tight at the top of the Trainers Challenge with just 4 points separating the leaders. Ben Haslam holds the lead going into the final afternoon’s racing, but the gap has narrowed after Saturday Ben strengthened his position with an early success in our feature race, the Kendal Caravans Cartmel Cup. Calavade showed tremendous spirit and was given a superb ride by Richie McClernon to get back up on the line There were no further successes for Ben, but 2 third places kept the points tally going
Hot on Ben’s heels is local Trainer Jimmy Moffatt. Jimmy has won the Challenge multiple times and also had just one winner, but more places narrowed the gap to keep within striking distance Judicial Review was the yards victor in the FGH Cengiz Sadik Memorial Handicap This was a great front running performance under a well judged Danny McMenamin ride, holding off all rivals to keep Jimmy’s total adding up
Lizzie Quinlan had great afternoon, landing a double with City Derby and Restandbethankful. It was a busy day as not only did Lizzie train the winners, she lead them up, and both won Best Turned Out prizes too.
Good luck to each of the above Trainers. They all have a number of fancied runners today and it could well go down to last race to see who comes out on top.

HOW TO PLACE A BET
PLACE YOUR BETS....
Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.
BET IN TWO WAYS -
1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides
HOW TO READ
2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (CLASS 5)
for four yrs old and upwards ¨ Total prize fund £7150
Race Description This is a three miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

BETTING ADVICE - HOW TO BET
1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager
2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, by naming the horse and horse’s number Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct the bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.
3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.
4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms, Place Betting, not all on-course bookmakers accept each way bets, i.e. for a win or place.
5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the punter to his rights.
6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes e.g. £1, £5 or £10, but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

Race Description This is the second division of Race 1. Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for To avoid horses being denied a run, which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority allows the race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.

BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE
Race Description This is a two miles and six furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 115 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 110.

Race Description This is a three miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

for four yrs old and upwards ¨ Total prize fund £12650 Owners Prize Money. 1st £5109, 2nd £2554, 3rd £1278, 4th £639, 5th £319. (Penalty Value £6680.46) Weights raised 5lb and paragraph 34 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable
Race Description This two miles, five furlongs handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 125. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.
