WELCOME

I am delighted to welcome you here today. We are all very grateful you have chosen to join us at Cartmel, whether you are a regular visitor or if this is your first time, many thanks indeed for your support.

I am always amazed at how this site transforms from a beautiful park, set in the Cartmel valley, much enjoyed year-round by local residents, into the scene of vibrant activity you see today. This is in no small part thanks to the legion of team members who work so hard to create this event. Other crucial contributors include local hotels, restaurants and other accommodation providers, medical teams, vets, farriers and many more; there are too many to mention individually, but all are important to us

A special thanks to all Owners and Trainers who support our race programme today – your keeping faith in a sport whose future must never be taken for granted, is hugely appreciated.

Today’s Charity are Cartmel Peninsula Holiday Boxes – a very local enterprise offering food boxes to those in need during school holidays If you can, please visit their stand situated on the Course side; they will be happy to tell you more about the services they provide and how you may be able to help.

Today’s Sponsors are our very regular partners Hadwins, Kendal Caravans, the Connell Family, PSR Marquee Hire and FGH Security We are extremely grateful for their continued support, allowing us to enhance our prize money contribution.

As many of you know, another annual Cartmel tradition will be followed tomorrow, as we enjoy the Blessing of the Racehorse Service at Cartmel Priory I know that our Racecourse Chaplin, Reverend Nick Devenish, looks forward to welcoming anyone wishing to attend

All that’s left for me, is to wish you a pleasant day and good fortune.

CARTMEL JOCKEYS’ CHALLENGE

red letter day for Charlotte, riding a double Her first success on Secret Secret in the opening Henry Cavendish 10th Birthday Handicap was comfortable, then her strength was shown when Cuzco Du Mathan came from off the pace to land the Weatherbys Hamilton Novices Handicap for crowd pleasing victories Charlottes wins mean she has now ridden out her claim, and all at Cartmel give our congratulations

As we go into the final weekend of Cartmel’s season, there is still everything to play for in the Jockeys’ Challenge. Sean Bowen is still in top spot after an easy success on Cavern Club in the Womens Community Matters Maiden Hurdle, but the ever popular Sean Quinlan is just a single point behind Out of the 23 points Sean Quinlan has accrued, 11 have come from the consistent City Derby His 3 wins and second is a feat rarely matched, with his latest a wide margin victory in the Champagne Louis Roederer Handicap Hurdle

The biggest paddock cheers were reserved for the Queen Of Cartmel Charlotte Jones This was a

TRAINER PTS

CARTMEL TRAINERS’ CHALLENGE

Ben Haslam strengthened his position at the top of the leaderboard with a win and a second at our last meeting. Previous Cartmel winner Ilikedwayurthinkin won the Strathmore Hotels Handicap Chase under a power-packed Richie McLernon drive. Ben has always been a great supporter of racing here and will be trying to land the Trainers’ title for first time after going close last year

Hot on Ben’s heels is local favourite and multiple Cartmel Champion Trainer Jimmy Moffatt. Both of Charlotte Jones’s winners were trained by Jimmy, and his double has seen him jump 3 places up into second. With both yards among the winners it may come down to the points accrued for placings, and will be fascinating to see who comes out on top

As well as Jimmy Moffatt’s double it was great day for Cumbrian Trainers, with popular yards Lizzie Quinlan and Dianne Sayer sending out winners to please their local supporters

HOW TO PLACE A BET

PLACE YOUR BETS....

Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.

BET IN TWO WAYS -

1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides

HOW TO READ

2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE

Race Description This is a two miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 125. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

CELEBRATING 3 DECADES OF PUDDING MAKING

The Connell family have been visiting Cartmel for over 40 years and are very pleased to be supporting Cartmel Races today.

Sue Connell remembers first meeting her fatherinlaw, Tony Connell, at Cartmel Races in August 1993 Tony was by the Paddock RunninginRail on his hands and knees, rummaging though the grass, trying to piece together his torn up, winning bet slip after a Stewards Enquiry. There was never a dull moment with Tony and Johnny and they are both very sadly missed

Tony Connell ~ 06/01/1949 – 01/07/2013 ~

Johnny Connell ~15/02/1969 – 27/09/2023 ~

Race Description This three miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

Race Description This is a two miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 115 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 110.

BETTING ADVICE - HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, by naming the horse and horse’s number Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct the bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms, Place Betting, not all on-course bookmakers accept each way bets, i.e. for a win or place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the punter to his rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes e.g. £1, £5 or £10, but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet

If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

THE FGH CENGIZ SADIK MEMORIAL HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE

(CLASS 5) (For the Cengiz Sadik Memorial Trophy) for four yrs old and upwards ¨ Total prize fund £8650 Owners Prize Money. 1st £3494, 2nd £1746, 3rd £874, 4th £437, 5th £218. (Penalty Value £4568.06)

Race Description This is a two miles and five furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

Race Description This two miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for To avoid horses being denied a run, which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority allows the race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.
