WELCOME

May I take this opportunity to thank the Owners and Trainers who have travelled from far and wide to participate today.

This is our highest-value race day, and I extend sincerest thanks to Oakmere Homes for their continued support as Headline Sponsors. It is vitally important that our race programme includes prize money at the levels we have today; without such partners as Oakmere Homes that would not be possible

If you are joining us today for the first time, I do hope you enjoy the racing, but also the rather older animals; the Dinosaurs who are paying us a visit. Please enjoy!

Thanks also to Hadwins, our other sponsors today, who are regular supporters of Cartmel Races and are always very welcome on site

Our nominated Charity today is Beep Doctors and I would ask that, if you can, you visit their stand on the course side to learn more about their services. They are volunteer pre-hospital Emergency Care Doctors offering a fast response to incidents. It is their first year with us and I hope we are able to show them our support.

The survival of jumps racing should not be taken for granted; many challenges face us in the years ahead. One such is the heavy-handedness and scale of the blanket affordability checks which impacts heavily on racing income derived from betting While we support measures to address problem gambling, current plans are likely to have unintended consequences such as driving gamblers into the growing unregulated black market A responsible ‘flutter’ at the races should be freely available to our race-goers

I do hope you have a wonderful day with us and you are inspired to join us again.

CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE

Each of the winners have been held up with pace judged to perfection

Sharing the lead is James Bowen. Despite not having any winners James still had placings to keep the scoreboard ticking over. He will be in the front rank all season

It is hotting up at the top of the Jockeys Challenge with in form Jonathan England’s double pushing him up the table. A brilliant 4 winners and a third from 5 rides in the opening 3 days is a strike rate rarely seen. Riding for wife Sam, the yard have been firing winners, starting with Haraar in the Bay Search and Rescue Novices Hurdle in a power packed finish He landed the double with Kilta in the Annual Members Handicap Chase under typically patient ride

Both William Maggs and Joe Williamson rode their first winners ever at Cartmel with very different rides. William rode a powerful finish on Iolani in the Campbell and Rowley Handicap Hurdle after being headed, and getting back up close home

Joe’s ride on Melvich Bay in the Racing TV Members Chase was perfectly timed with his charge being delivered at the last to win

Jonathan England
James Bowen
William Maggs

OLIVER GREENALL AND JOSH GUERRIERO

CARTMEL TRAINERS CHALLENGE

Rebecca Menzies got her first winner here this season when Imperial Data came with a strong late finish in the Hales of Cartmel Handicap Hurdle under Sean Quinlan. Rebecca is a great supporter of Cartmel sending plenty of runners, and is likely to be in contention at the top of the table all season

It was all change at the top of the Trainer Challenge after a great last day for Sam England.

Her first success with Haarar was popular with the evening racing crowd Not content with that Sam doubled up with Kilta to send the yards followers home happy As with most of Sam’s runners, he was ridden expertly by husband

Jonathan In the opening 3 days at Cartmel Sam has saddled 6 runners producing a superb 4 winners and a third.

In second place is Warren Greatrex who despite not many runners has been getting most in the frame. He is certainly one to watch out for when making the long journey here.

Congratulations go to Danny Brooke who saddled his first Cartmel winner when Melvich Bay was the easiest winner of the night in the Racing TV Members Handicap Chase Danny’s family have had plenty of success here but this was the first under his own name with hopefully many more to follow

HOW TO PLACE A BET

PLACE YOUR BETS....

Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.

BET IN TWO WAYS -

1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides

HOW TO READ

2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

Race Description This is a two miles, six furlongs and 31 yards handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE

Race Description This is a three miles, one furlong and 83 yards handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100.

Race Description This is a two miles, five furlongs and 34 yards handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

Race Description This two miles, one furlong and 61 yards handicap steeple chase has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 110. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

Perhaps former C&D scorer LIGHTS ARE GREEN will prove the answer to a trappy finale as his 2 Hexham efforts this month have been creditable and he’s only 1lb above the mark he defied here last summer Last month’s Kelso scorer Baron Briggs will be a threat if his jumping holds up, while Roll With It could also play a part if reacting well to first-time cheekpieces
