UNDER THE RULES OF RACING

Cartmel Steeplechases, Cartmel Racecourse, Cartmel, Grange-Over-Sands, Cumbria, LA11 6QF Tel: 015395 36340

WELCOME

A very warm welcome and sincere thanks to everyone visiting Cartmel this afternoon

Whether you are an Owner or Trainer with horses entered today, a regular visitor, or a first-time guest here to enjoy the music after racing, your presence adds colour, character and magic to our event.

I am always pleased to welcome the wide variety of traders that join us at Cartmel together with the on-course bookmakers, some of whom we have been coming to us for years (and long may that continue).

At the heart of our racing activity are our Annual Members whose loyal support of Cartmel is hugely appreciated.

I must mention today’s Charity – Carer Support South Lakes; a local organisation who provide a range of services to support and enhance the lives of unpaid Carers throughout South Lakeland This is their first year with us and I do hope you are able to visit their stand on the course side if you would like to learn more about what they do

Our Sponsors today are Louis Roederer Champagne, The Traffic Management Company, MKM Building Supplies and Rathbones. Without the continuing support of our sponsors, we would not be able to maintain our executive contribution to prize money

The survival of jumps racing should not be taken for granted; many challenges face us in the years ahead One such is the heavy-handedness and scale of the blanket affordability checks which impacts heavily on racing income derived from betting While we support measures to address problem gambling, current plans are likely to have unintended consequences such as driving gamblers into the growing unregulated black market A responsible ‘flutter’ at the races should be freely available to our race-goers

All that remains, is for me to wish you the very best of luck and a hope that you enjoy the day.

CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE

Each of the winners have been held up with pace judged to perfection

Sharing the lead is James Bowen. Despite not having any winners James still had placings to keep the scoreboard ticking over. He will be in the front rank all season

It is hotting up at the top of the Jockeys Challenge with in form Jonathan England’s double pushing him up the table. A brilliant 4 winners and a third from 5 rides in the opening 3 days is a strike rate rarely seen. Riding for wife Sam, the yard have been firing winners, starting with Haraar in the Bay Search and Rescue Novices Hurdle in a power packed finish He landed the double with Kilta in the Annual Members Handicap Chase under typically patient ride

Both William Maggs and Joe Williamson rode their first winners ever at Cartmel with very different rides. William rode a powerful finish on Iolani in the Campbell and Rowley Handicap Hurdle after being headed, and getting back up close home

Joe’s ride on Melvich Bay in the Racing TV Members Chase was perfectly timed with his charge being delivered at the last to win

CARTMEL TRAINERS CHALLENGE

It was all change at the top of the Trainer Challenge after a great last day for Sam England.

Her first success with Haarar was popular with the evening racing crowd Not content with that Sam doubled up with Kilta to send the yards followers home happy As with most of Sam’s runners, he was ridden expertly by husband

Jonathan In the opening 3 days at Cartmel Sam has saddled 6 runners producing a superb 4 winners and a third.

In second place is Warren Greatrex who despite not many runners has been getting most in the frame. He is certainly one to watch out for when making the long journey here.

Rebecca Menzies got her first winner here this season when Imperial Data came with a strong late finish in the Hales of Cartmel Handicap Hurdle under Sean Quinlan. Rebecca is a great supporter of Cartmel sending plenty of runners, and is likely to be in contention at the top of the table all season Congratulations go to Danny Brooke who saddled his first Cartmel winner when Melvich Bay was the easiest winner of the night in the Racing TV Members Handicap Chase Danny’s family have had plenty of success here but this was the first under his own name with hopefully many more to follow

HOW TO PLACE A BET

PLACE YOUR BETS....

Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.

BET IN TWO WAYS -

1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides

HOW TO READ

2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

Race Description The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles, six furlongs race and 31 yards race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

Owners Prize Money. 1st £2484, 2nd £1242, 3rd £621, 4th £311, 5th £155. (Penalty Value £3247.81) Weights raised 4lb and paragraph 34 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable 2 Eliminated Under Rules (I)9 and (I)10.

Race Description This is a two miles, six furlongs and 31 yards handicap hurdle race for mares aged four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

The combinations of first-time cheekpieces and a step back up in trip may help ASA travel with a bit more purpose, and if that is the case, she’s capable of winning from her basement mark. Ragosina is fit from the Flat and receives a handy age allowance, so she’s in the mix, along with Lady Hamilton.

BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE

Race Description This is a two miles, six furlongs and 31 yards handicap hurdle race for mares aged four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

BETTING ADVICE - HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, by naming the horse and horse’s number Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct the bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

for five yrs old and upwards ¨ Total prize fund £9749

Owners Prize Money. 1st £3938, 2nd £1968, 3rd £985, 4th £492, 5th £246. (Penalty Value £5148.45)

Race Description This is a three miles, one furlong and 107 yards handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

ELLEON found his clumsiness costing him the hat-trick at Hexham last time but Cartmel poses an easier jumping test and he’s fancied to resume winning ways at the chief expense of the similarly in-form Do No Wrong Ilikedwayurthinkin has slipped a long way in the weights and caught the eye to a degree over hurdles last time, so is just preferred to Leading Force to complete the placings

Race Description This two miles, five furlongs and 34 yards handicap steeple chase has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100 In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

PLAY SMARTER

MERMAIDS CAVE wasn’t seen to best effect at Newton Abbot last time and might be worth another chance back at the scene of her win at the end of last month. Last year’s winner Calevade arrives on the back of a respectable effort on the Flat 3 weeks ago and could make a bold bid to defend his crown under John Dawson. Phil Kirby handicap newcomer Bathgate and recent Hexham scorer Allbetsoff complete the shortlist.
