WELCOME

Welcome to our Spring Bank Holiday race meeting – a day where families and friends can join to enjoy a wonderful afternoon of Summer Jumps racing in this beautiful valley

With seven competitive races this afternoon, we aim to hear the unmistakable Cartmel ‘roar’ as our athletes, both equine and human, battle it out on the home straight; one of the unique offers at Cartmel is how close we can get to the action on the track.

My thanks to all the Owners who have entered horses today, your support makes a direct contribution to our race programme We aim to maintain our field sizes over this Season, the very best endorsement of Summer Jumping in the North.

Our sponsors today also deserve a special mention – the family of Tony and Jonny Connell, Hadwins, PSR Marquee Hire and Lakes Luxury Loos Without the continued support of our valued sponsors, we could not continue to invest in our race programme, which is an essential requirement on our part.

Our Charity today is St Mary’s Hospice, who do such valuable work around the Peninsula I, along with so many of you who are local to this area, know just how important a part the Hospice plays in our community. I wish them well with their fundraising today.

While we are proud to endorse developments in racing that seek to enhance the whole sport, I think we are owed more recognition both as a key Summer jumping track in the North and a significant economic contributer to the local economy. We are ever grateful for the support we get from you, our loyal customers; in return, we will strive to protect the sport and your enjoyment of racing

Love Summer Jumps, Love Cartmel

May I wish you good luck and a wonderful Whit Bank Holiday.

CARTMEL JOCKEYS’ CHALLENGE

His one previous winner at Cartmel was in 2014, and hopefully he will be back more often to be a contender in the Challenge.

We witnessed special performances from Jockeys having their first winner at Cartmel:

James Bowen made a superb start in Cartmel’s opening fixture on Saturday with 2 winners. James landed our first race in terrific style on Shantwopointfive in the Sticky Toffee Pudding Maiden Hurdle having looked booked for minor honours for most of the race

His second success in the Visit Holker Hall and Gardens Handicap Hurdle was on Village Master, completing a 20/1 double, both horses winning for trainer Warren Greatrex Not content with that, he then also had a second place to lead the standings on 8 points

Close behind on 7 points is Harry Skelton. Also from just three mounts Harry had one winner in the Armstrong Watson Novices Handicap Chase and two close seconds.

Ciaran O’Shea’s debut winner here on Mermaids Cave in the Hadwins Mares Handicap Hurdle was timed to perfection to lead near the finish after being patiently ridden

JOCKEY

Lucy Turner’s ride on Fautinette in the Cartmel Show Handicap Hurdle was a terrific front-running performance seeing off all challengers.

Micheal Nolan’s win in the Molson Coors Handicap on the ever popular Tommie Beau was our biggest winning distance of the meeting.

Congratulations to all 3 on their first wins here.

CARTMEL TRAINERS’ CHALLENGE

Warren Greatrex is the leader in the Trainer Challenge on 8 points. The Upper Lambourn based Trainer was off to a flying start with Shantwopointfive winning our opening event, the Sticky Toffee Pudding Maiden Hurdle.

Not content with that success, the yard bookended the meeting with Village Master successful in the Visit Holker Hall Handicap Hurdle, represented by Olly Cozak and her enthusiastic owners.

A second place for the yard’s other runner ensures Warren is at the top of the table after our opening day.

Close behind is the powerful Dan Skelton team on 7 points.

Dan has not had many runners here in the past, however having the impressive winner of the Armstrong Watson Novices Chase in Playful Saint and two second places may lead to further visits.

The up and coming James Owen stable is in third place with 5 points from just two runners. After Mermaid’s Cave’s victory in the Hadwins Mares Handicap Hurdle, a further runner-up position gave an impressive strike rate James is a Trainer to keep a close eye on throughout the season

Close behind are Cartmel regulars Sam England and Ben Haslam. They have strong teams and are great supporters of racing at Cartmel Sam had one winner on Saturday and both will have plenty of winners through the Summer

HOW TO PLACE A BET

PLACE YOUR BETS....

Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.

BET IN TWO WAYS -

1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides

HOW TO READ

2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

Race Description This is a three miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Race Description As the race title suggests, a Veterans’ steeple chase is designed specifically for those in the later stages of their National Hunt careers. These types of races often attract some past stars of the sport and provide a perfect opportunity for fans to catch a final glimpse of their equine heroes before they are retired. In order to qualify for this three miles and five furlongs handicap, horses must be ten-years-old or older and be officially rated between 0 and 135.

BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE

Race Description This is a two miles and one furlong handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

Race Description This is a two miles and five furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

Race Description This two miles, six furlongs handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ –usually a distinct disadvantage.
