WELCOME

May I take this opportunity to offer my warmest thanks for joining us here today, at our first Meeting of 2024, and for your continued support of Cartmel Racecourse, our racing programme and the festival-type events we offer you today.

You may be aware that because of some of the broader Industry initiatives introduced this year, aimed at attracting new support for horseracing by showcasing some ‘Premier’ fixtures, we have been allocated a later start time today. As always, please make known your thoughts about this or any other aspect of our programme

Cartmel serves not only to introduce our sport to those who wish to visit and enjoy racing, but we also lend significant support to the wider rural economy. Delivering as we do, approaching 100,000 visitors to the annual British race day attendance statistics, we believe you, our loyal supporters are owed certainty as we look to the future.

I offer very warm thanks to the Owners who have supported our race programme today by entering their runners and joining us in person

We also have our race sponsors to thank and acknowledge – Sticky Toffee Pudding, Hadwins, Molson Coors and Armstrong Watson Their contribution goes to further support our race programme

I must also thank the Cartmel Agricultural Society for bringing their ‘Mini Show’ here today and I hope you have the opportunity to see them in their marquee on the Course side.

Our Charity today is The Well – their third year with us; if you are not familiar with this outstanding organisation, I invite you to visit them at their stand on the Course side, to learn more about their work in the field of addiction

Love Summer Jumps, Love Cartmel

All that is left for me to say is, please enjoy your day with us and have fun.

CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE

Regulars will know of our Season long competition for the Top Jockey and Trainer here at Cartmel 3 points are awarded for the winner of each race, with 2 for the runner up and 1 for third. The prize for each is an overnight stay at the beautiful Swan Hotel and Spa in nearby Newby Bridge

Last season saw Sean Bowen land the top prize. Sean rode his first ever winner here and his career has been on an upward curve ever since. He went agonisingly close to becoming Champion Jockey for the first time last season, only missing out by a handful of winners and had a long period of time out through injury. He is regular here and will be looking to get a number of winners of on the board for both his father Peter’s stable and other supporters

Multiple time Champion Jockey Brian Hughes is another regular backed by powerful yards including Donald McCain

Others to look out for are Richie McLernon, who had multiple winners last season with a fine record here, and of course fan favourite Charlotte Jones.

Riding for local Trainer Jimmy Moffatt, Charlotte is sure to have a number of winners through the year, and usually gets the biggest cheers when successful.

CARTMEL TRAINERS CHALLENGE

All changed in the second half of the season with plenty of winners to ensure the top spot once again went to Pit Farm Stables.

The early pace setter last year was Ben Haslam, who held the lead until the final weekend after a flying start with plenty of winners and places. Ben and his team are great supporters of racing here and are ones to watch.

Cartmel’s own Jimmy Moffatt once again landed the 2023 Season Top Trainer Challenge and picked up the Angela Robinson Trophy for an incredible sixth time Jimmy had, by his own high standards, a slow start to the campaign and was not on the leaderboard after the first few meetings.

Irish Trainers have been sending increasing numbers of runners across the water recently with much success. Cian Collins, Emmet Mullins and in particular John O’Connell all tasted victory in 2023 The latter in particular has a fine strike rate in Novice Hurdles and his raiders are always to be respected.

HOW TO PLACE A BET

PLACE YOUR BETS....

Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.

BET IN TWO WAYS -

1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides

HOW TO READ

2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

Race Description

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race

Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles and five furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

Race Description

BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE

This is a two miles, one furlong and forty-six yard handicap hurdle race/steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares which have been rated from 0 to 125. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Race Description

This is a three miles, one furlong and eighty-three yards handicap hurdle race/steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares which have been rated from 0 to 125. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 125 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 120.

Race Description

This is a three miles, one furlong and one hundred and seven yards handicap hurdle race/steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

Race Description

This three miles, one-and-a-half furlongs handicap hurdle race/steeple chase has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.
