WELCOME

A very Happy Bank Holiday to you and thanks from the whole team for joining us today. It is always with some small sense of sadness that I write my final welcome of the season

So we gather for the season’s six final races, including the Weatherby’s Cavendish Cup. The small Cartmel grounds team have worked wonders recently to repair and make safe our track after weeks of dreadful weather

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the whole Cartmel Raceday Team for their work on all of our race days this year; work often carried out in challenging circumstances and with great good humour. A very special mention must go to Richard Repton, one of our race day team, who has given us 58 years of service and retires today – our very warm thanks

Our race day presenter John Sexton also retires today after 16 years’ service with us. Although John’s reassuring voice will be lost to us after today, we will remember with great fondness and gratitude all he has done for Cartmel and we wish him and his family all the very best

We have a full card of sponsors today and our thanks go to them all for their support of our Race Programme

I cannot thank enough all the Owners who have declared runners with us today; their loyalty to Cartmel is sincerely appreciated. Our final charity of the 2023 season is Growing Well

a local South Lakeland enterprise offering support throughout the County, to adults suffering mental health challenges A very interesting proposition and one I would urge you to assist if you can.

It’s been a wonderful, if not somewhat challenging, season (in terms of weather) and I do hope we will be welcoming you once again in 2024 With my best wishes for the coming seasons

CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE

lead overall with two winners and a second in the first three races on Saturday

Duleek Street got things moving in the right direction when taking the opening Hadwins

Maiden Hurdle and after Post No Bills had been collared on the run in by Glory And Honour in the Fitzdares Novices Handicap Chase, he was back on the winning path with Fairlawn Flyer in the Molson Coors Cengiz Sadik Memorial Handicap Chase

His success means he goes into the final day with a four point advantage over Brian Hughes, who couldn’t manage a place from his two rides and Richie McLernon, whose third on Lightening Company behind Duleek Street was as good as it got.

Sean Bowen is not only the clear leader in the early stages of this season’s Jockeys Championship, he is also the one to catch in this season’s Cartmel Jockeys Challenge with just one more day of action to go

Bowen, who had the first of his 775 career wins over jumps in Britain at Cartmel, continues to ride the track as well as anyone and he leapt into the

Jonathan England, a winner on Glory And Honour, his only ride of the day, is a close fourth with Sean Quinlan still a handy fifth despite drawing a blank again Danny McMenamin’s six points included a win on Our Sam in the last while it was a red-letter day for local jockey Leah Noreci, who opened her win account on Cuzco Du Mathan from only her sixth ride in public.

Handicap Hurdle and topped off by Our Sam. With another two points added by City Vaults, runner-up to Duleek Street in the opening Hadwins Maiden Hurdle, it was an 11-points haul for Moffatt which swept him past the long-time leader Ben Haslam, whose three runners netted a single point through Lightening Company in the opener.

It looks to have been a decisive move by Moffatt and means that in the course of the afternoon the battle for this year’s Challenge comes down to two possible winners with Moffatt needing just one winner from his runners this afternoon to clinch the title yet again

Rather like his gelding Our Sam, who came fast and late to win the Fitzdares Handicap Hurdle on Saturday, Cartmel trainer James Moffatt seems to have timed his challenge to perfection in his bid to retain the Andrea Robinson Trophy by winning the Cartmel Trainers Challenge. His May-time struggles look like a distant memory for Moffatt, who took the lead in the Challenge for the first time this season after

Another big battle is on for third place, currently occupied by Sam England, but with George Bewley, Milton Harris and John McConnell just one point behind, there is still the opportunity for all that to change

HOW TO PLACE A BET

PLACE YOUR BETS....

Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.

BET IN TWO WAYS -

1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides

2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

Race Description This is a two miles, one furlong and 61 yard handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rivals As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Raceday preview from Weatherbys

Nine go to post in what looks set to be a competitive renewal of the Weatherbys HamiltonCavendishCupHandicapChase,a Class3eventforthestayingchasers.

The weights are headed by Landofsmiles for Peter and Sean Bowen, who arrives here on the back of a good win at Uttoxeter. He jumped well throughout the contest that day, putting a couple of poor efforts prior behind him, and should remain competitive if jumping with the same fluency just 3lbs higher. The stable are in flying form too and had an impressive winner at the track

The weights are headed by Landofsmiles for Peter and Sean Bowen, who arrives here on the back of a good win at Uttoxeter

here on Saturday. Seamus Mullins’ Tommie Beauhadaquietrunoverhurdleswhenlast seen, but did win his last two starts over the bigger obstacles. The-eight-year-old is a strong travelling type and can bounce right backtoformrevertedtofences, althoughhe probably wouldn’t want too much cut in the ground. Jony Max and Dee Star met here over course and distance in June with the formerninelengthsaheadofthatreopposing rival.ChristianWilliams’eight-year-oldwent downbyjustaneckthatday, withthewinner boosting the form with another victory back at the track since, and he ran a respectable raceinthirdatNewtonAbbotwhenlastseen.

DeeStar gets a 5lb weight swing here in his attempt to reverse the form. He has already notched five victories at the track, but must bounce back from his last start when pulled upatMarketRasen.

The other two course and distance winners in the field are Breaking The Ice and Eagle Terrace The former returned after 208 days off the track with a course and distance fourth, perhaps the lack of a recent run showing as he weakened in the closing stages. He has been dropped 3lbs for that effort and will likely come on for the run. Eagle Terrace is the youngest in the field at just five-years-old but already has eight chase starts under his belt, so doesn’t lack for experience. Noel Kelly’s gelding won on stable debut here on his penultimate start and will handle the underfoot conditions betterthanmostinthisfield.

Powerful Position landed an impressive hattrickforChristianWilliamsin2022buthas proved difficult to keep on the track since, with just three starts since last October. He was well beaten on his first start following wind surgery at Newton Abbot last time but can give a better account of himself with that under his belt now. Dallas Des Pictons was once rated as high as 148 over hurdles whenwithGordonElliottbuthasyettoscore since switching stables to Dianne Sayer. He didn’t travel with any sort of fluency at the track back in May but has now dropped down to a tempting career-low mark of just 120. Bodhisattva was also in the Gordon Elliott stable but has since switched to John McConnell.HesignedoffhistimeintheElliott yardwithanimpressivenovicechasevictory at Perth and was last seen finishing a solid fifth in a competitive handicap chase at Galway for his new stable. The six-year-old has had just the four starts over fences and looks the most unexposed contender in the field;thebestisyettocome, andheisabig playerhereunderBrianHayes.

THIS RACE

Race Description This is a three miles, one furlong and 107 yard handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 140 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 135.

In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

HADWINS SERIES

Although his two runners failed to add to his tally in the final leg on Saturday, McCain had already done enough thanks to a couple of victories by the progressive hurdler Titanium Moon, who joined the McCain yard from David Loughnane earlier this year

Second place, but no cigar went to Irish trainer John McConnell, who took his score to 18 points with Duleek Street, who proved too classy for the opposition and cantered to an easy win in Saturday’s fifth and final round.

For the second successive season, Donald McCain picked up the £1,000 bonus as the most successful trainer in the five race series sponsored by Hadwins, the Lindale-based Lake District Audi and Volkswagen dealer

The only other trainers to notch a win in the series were Stella Barclay, who had her first ever Cartmel winner with Ensel Du Perche in July and Alastair Ralph, who briefly led the way after Magical Maggie won the first round race on the opening day of the season in May.

Aword about Kevin O’Toole, aka Sel in case you didn’t know him!

There will not be many people in the Cartmel and Grange areathat donot knowor have not encountered Sel. Once seen, never forgotten; there was always laughter wherever he went.

Sel was passionate about horse racing from an early age, he was caught AWOL fromclass in 1978 when he was 15 years old, listening toThe Derby on his portable transistor radio. Shirley Heights was thewinner and years later he was part of a syndicate that owned a descendant of Shirley Heights!

Always at his beloved Cartmel with his friends, over all the years of his life, either in the Paddock attending the races or on the course side supporting thefootball.

Sadly, Kev was taken ill in May 2022 with brain cancer and wasn’t able to attend theraces in his final weeks and months. He passed in July 2022 aged 59.

Kev’s family and friends are grateful to Cartmel Racecoursefor this opportunity to celebrate Kev/Sel in themost appropriate way possible, with a race in his name He would be humbled and amazed.

So when the race begins, please join his family and friends and raise a glass to Sel and remember him with the joy he brought to everyone who knew him!

Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for To avoid horses being denied a run, which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority allows the race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.
