WELCOME

The warmest of welcomes to you all on this Cartmel Cup Saturday, the biggest day in our calendar – we are all very grateful you have chosen to join us today. It’s no secret that we have experienced some extreme weather conditions this year and I must thank the small Cartmel team for working so hard to ensure our racing surface remains in tip top condition

To all of the Owners who have declared runners today, thank you for your continued support. This season, we have made available additional race day tickets to all Owners, to include more groups and syndicate members.

I am delighted to welcome back our main sponsor today, Fitzdares; this is their third season with us and their contribution goes directly to our Prize Money fund We greatly appreciate the Fitzdare support of Cartmel

Today, Hadwins host their last Mares race for the 2023 season – regular sponsors such as Hadwins are so crucial to our continued success and we thank them

Bowness Bay Brewing are sponsoring a race today – it has been very good to work with Richard Husbands and his team – I know many people enjoy their local ales and beers and I feel they have really added something special to our race day offering with their very local range of products

Today’s charity is Womens Community Matters

I would recommend you take a moment to visit their stall and learn a bit more about the services and help they offer in the area I know that many of you are planning to race with us again on Monday (the last fixture of 2023) and we look forward to welcoming you. It will be the last day for our long- standing race presenter, John Sexton, retiring after 16 years. I will not be alone in missing John sorely and wishing him a happy retirement

All that now remains is for me to wish you very good luck

Lord Cavendish, Chairman Cartmel Steeplechases (Holker) Ltd

CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE

the chance to make some ground, but two rides on the day yielded no points and so the top three remained unchanged

And with the Monday card abandoned, it is as you were heading into the final two days of competition with the only change seeing Bowen joined in fourth place by Jonathan England, whose three rides for wife Sam all made the frame to give him four points and move on to 13 points for the campaign

Just behind the top five is Irish jockey Ben Harvey, who has a near impeccable record at Cartmel this season He has had just four rides and come out with three winners and a second, a strike rate which would make him a major threat should he have more rides at the track this season

Brian Hughes’s decision to miss the July Saturday meeting at Cartmel in favour of riding at Market Rasen did him no harm at all in his quest to regain the Cartmel Jockeys Challenge title

Hughes, second-placed Richie McLernon and fourth-placed Sean Bowen were all in action at Market Rasen leaving third-placed Sean Quinlan

Defending champion Charlotte Jones showed the flair which gave her the crown in the last two seasons when she brought Jelski with a perfectly-timed run between Croagh Patrick and Kellyiscool to win the William Hill Epic Value Handicap Chase Amazingly, it was Charlotte’s first winner of the season and doubled her tally for the campaign to six points.

CARTMEL TRAINERS CHALLENGE

Fern O’Brien in the Banks Lyon Jewellers

Female Jockeys Handicap Hurdle, a race won by Tom Lacey’s Luttrell Lad and Izzie Marshall

Despite having a decent lead – six points equates to two wins – Haslam cannot relax just yet as local trainer James Moffatt has the wind in his sails and another winner through Jelski, who came with a strong late run to win the William Hill Epic Value Handicap Chase

The win took Moffatt clear second ahead of George Bewley and Donald McCain, neither of whom were able to add to their scores and so they were joined by Sam England, who didn’t have a winner, but notched four points with a second and two third places from her four runners.

Middleham trainer Ben Haslam’s gallop towards his first ever Cartmel Trainers Challenge title has turned into a bit of a crawl, but he still maintains a six points advantage over defending champion James Moffatt with just two days left in the season after the July Monday was abandoned.

Calevade, who had a won a seller at the May meeting and then a conditional jockeys’ race in June, was back again to add another point to Haslam’s tally with third place under

Just behind the leading five are two trainers who have only had 12 runners between them all season Milton Harris has amassed his points from just seven runners and had another winner when Pyramid Place took the featured William Hill Cumbria Crystal Trophy, while Irish trainer John McConnell’s five runners have included three winners, the latest being Kinbara in the opening William Hill Keep Your Raceday Positive Novices

HOW TO PLACE A BET

PLACE YOUR BETS....

Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.

BET IN TWO WAYS -

1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides

2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles, one furlong, 46 yard race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

Race Description This is a two miles, 1 furlong and 61 yard novices’ handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb

BLESSING OF THE HORSE

Do join us on Sunday 27th August at 10.30am in The Priory for Steeplechase Sunday. This is a short service that celebrates jump racing and the beauty of the landscape that is the back drop to Cartmel Races. The exercising of horses dates back to when The Priory was a monastery and we celebrate that continuing today. We also welcome our local trainer Jimmy Moffat who will bring one of his race horses to the driveway as we conclude our service outside. It is a truly blessed spectacle. You are most welcome.

Cengiz Sadik Memorial Race 26th August 2023

This year is the 17th anniversary of my son Cengiz’s passing.

Cengiz was the king pin of my small family racing operation. During 26 years of training in Ireland and England we had our share of winners.

Cengiz loved Cartmel and rarely missed a meeting, usually coming over from our base in Worcestershire and staying overnight with our horses at the racecourse.

Our most famous horse to win there was Green Go, which he purchased for me from the Czech Republic in 2002. I was dubious whether the horse being a maiden sprinter would stay 2 miles over hurdles, he assured me he would stay.

He brought Green Go to Cartmel for the bank holiday meeting in 2003 and won the 2 mile 5 Beginners Chase on Saturday by 25 lengths. Against my wishes, he twisted my arm to run him again on Monday in the 3 mile 2 Handicap Chase. I said to him “you are pushing your luck running him over a marathon distance” he said “not only will he stay the distance Dad, he will win!” So he stayed over and run Green Go on Monday.

After a night out on Sunday night, Cengiz was found in Green Go’s stable feeding him by hand at 1am. He told his mystified friends that Green Go was off his food and he would not win unless he ate his food.

As history will show Green Go won again on Monday by 25 lengths.

I sponsored the race in his memory the year he died in 2006.

I have had a runner in the race for the last 14 years and won it myself in 2008 with Desert Tommy, by 25 lengths amid floods of tears from myself and my wife. I hope to have a runner this year, all being well.

Cartmel has become a place of pilgrimage for me with so many memories of the past and present. I feel always welcomed here and thank Cartmel for keeping my son’s race going for so many years.

The enclosed picture of Cengiz with a horse called My True Romance was taken at Cartmel Racecourse stables on 27th May 2006 the day the horse won. This was Cengiz’s very last photo, his very last runner and his very last winner. Sadly, he took his own life the following month due to the breakdown of his marriage and inability to see his 2 young sons who are now aged 20 and 21.

Race Description This is a three miles one furlong 107 yard handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

HADWINS MARES SERIES

Donald McCain is firmly in line to claim the bonus prize for the second successive season as they go into the final round this afternoon Not only does McCain currently have a 15-point lead but is double-handed today and that should be enough to clinch it McCain owes his strong position to Titanium Moon, who joined the McCain yard from David Loughnane earlier this year and has shown herself to be very much a mare on the upgrade by winning a couple of the Hadwins’ races in the hands of three-times champion jockey

Brian Hughes

Hadwins, the Lindale-based Lake District Audi and Volkswagen dealer, are major supporters of racing at Cartmel and they are putting up a £1,000 bonus for the trainer who collects the most points in their five races across the season.

The only other trainer with a runner today who has already notched a win in the series is Stella Barclay, who had her first ever Cartmel winner when Ensel Du Perche proved too good for the opposition in the Hadwins Handicap Chase at the last race day in July

2m 1f 46y

Race Description This is a two miles, one furlong, 46 yard handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 130 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 125.

Race Stats

Leading course trainer (17-22): J Moffatt (32 wins from 180 runners, 18%) runs VOCAL DUKE

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): Fergal O’Brien (5 wins from 14 runners, 36%) runs GLORIOUS ZOFF

Weightwatcher: CALUM GILHOOLEY won off a handicap mark of 117, his rating is now down 9lb to 108.

Race Description This two miles, one furlong, 46 yard handicap hurdle race has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

Race Description This is the second division of Race 5. Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for To avoid horses being denied a run, which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority allows the race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.

MR RUMBALICIOUS: Following its run on 12/5/2023 it was reported that the trainer could not explain the poor run.

Probable S.P’s: 2-1 Nadim (IRE), 4-1 Ambassador (IRE), 8-1 Iolani (GER), 11-1 Chancer Dancer (IRE), Mr Rumbalicious (IRE), 14-1 Bentham (IRE), Fathers Advice (IRE), 18-1 African Sun (IRE), 22-1 Torbellino (GB), 28-1 Solway Staree (GB)

A winner on his final start for Martin Keighley in July, AMBASSADOR picked up where he left off to make a winning debut for his present yard back at Uttoxeter 4 weeks ago, despite seemingly doing the bare minimum when hitting the front. Up only 2lb for that success, he gets the nod to complete the hat-trick, with Nadim, who arrives in search of the 4-timer, rating the chief threat. Mr Rumbalicious, on debut for the Moffatt team, and Iolani are others to consider

PLAY SMARTER

HOGANVILLE is pretty reliable on the whole, so it’s probably safe to assume that his latest display at Stratford was simply a case of a ‘bad day at the office’. He remains on a fair mark, 3lb higher than for his Kelso success during the spring, and is taken to regain the winning thread here Judicial Law and Mr Yeats are both in good form and merit respect, while the hat-trick seeking Aramax is another to consider.
