WELCOME

Thank you for joining us today – we very much appreciate your support.

A special welcome today to guests of Racing TV – if this is your first time at Cartmel, I hope you enjoy the racing and the very special sights and sounds of a day with us here in South Lakeland

I cannot go any further without letting you know that our wonderful grounds team are to be presented with their ‘Ground Staff of the Year’ Award. A truly amazing achievement by what must be one of the smallest teams in the UK, made even more of an achievement when you consider the other finalists were York and Ascot!

Please join me in congratulating them

We have some wonderful sponsors with us today – their much appreciated contribution goes directly to support our race programme through our Prize Money

Campbell & Rowley

Hales of Cartmel

Champagne Louis Roederer

Strathmore Hotels

Sponsors are very important to us, as they contribute directly to our on-going race programme through our prize money.

I must say that Strathmore Hotels have been a long-standing supporter of the racecourse, for which we remain very grateful.

To all Owners who have declared their horses to run with us – thank you from us all

Our selected Charity today is Racing Welfare, our Industry charity. What I find remarkable is that they can help anyone and everyone who works in the racing industry with a wide range of support. Please do help if you can.

I do hope we see you again this season and whilst you are with us, if you have any queries or questions, please do ask a member of the Cartmel Team

HOW TO PLACE A BET

PLACE YOUR BETS....

Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.

BET IN TWO WAYS -

1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides

2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

HADWINS MARES SERIES

Donald McCain is a perennial winner at Cartmel and the Cheshire trainer is well on course to claim the £1,000 bonus prize attached to the Hadwins Mares series at the track with two rounds now completed.

Titanium Moon, in the hands of three-time champion jockey Brian Hughes, ran out a convincing winner of the Hadwins Mares Novices Hurdle on Monday, storming past favourite Come On Du Berlais after jumping the last to win going away by 11 lengths

A decent performer on the Flat for David Loughnane last year, Titanium Moon only joined the McCain yard earlier this month and produced this

cracking performance on the heels of a highly promising second to All The Glory at Hexham

The win takes McCain on to 15 points already, three points clear of Alastair Ralph, who won the first round on Saturday and nine ahead of John McConnell and Fergal O’Brien, who share third place

McCain won the bonus last season without a winner, but by virtue of having runners in all six legs and collecting points for placed runs which eventually took him to the top of the leader board, so he is already setting a mighty challenge for all the other yards.

JOCKEYS’ & TRAINERS CHALLENGES 2023

CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE

of the race to take the title this season. Bowen had his first-ever winner at Cartmel and more than 700 winners later is firmly established among the elite of jump jockeys as he showed when bringing Dee Star from what seemed an impossible position at the last to win the Alan Bolt Memorial Veterans Handicap Chase by more than 12 lengths

It was not quite all change in the Cartmel Jockeys Challenge after the second day of competition on Monday, but Ben Harvey’s clear lead in the table has quickly evaporated to just one point

And the jockeys on his tail are two of the very best in Sean Bowen and Brian Hughes, second and first in last season’s Jockeys Championship and currently the top two at this early stage

With two second places as well from his five rides, Bowen’s seven-point haul was the best performance of the day, edging out Richie McLernon, whose four rides garnered him six points with a first, second and a third all for trainer

Meanwhile triple Champion Jockey Hughes got off the mark for the season with a win on Titanium Moon in the opening Hadwins Mares Novices Hurdle, while Henry Brooke’s fine ride on Ubetya in the Molson Coors Handicap Chase took him on to five points and a share of fifth place with Jonathan England.

CARTMEL TRAINERS CHALLENGE

Middleham trainer Ben Haslam was the big mover at Cartmel on Monday when his four-horse raid produced a winner, a second and a third to catapult him into joint third place and serious contention for the Cartmel Trainers Challenge

The feature was Aramax, who ran out an impressive winner of the Tony Connell Memorial Handicap Hurdle after cruising to the front half-afurlong from the finish to beat Scrum Diddly, who had jumped into the lead at the last and looked set to give Oliver Sherwood a second winner at the meeting

George Bewley did follow up Saturday’s win with Lights Are Green when Strike Of Lighting took the closing Well Handicap Hurdle to give jockey Conor Rabbitt his first Cartmel winner The win takes Bewley on to seven points and second place behind John McConnell, who did not have any runners on Monday. Only two trainers have ever won the Challenge since it began 11 years ago, James Moffatt, who remains pointless after the first two days of competition and Donald McCain, who has a share of third place after Titanium Moon’s win in the opener.

Peter Bowen’s first visit to Cartmel this season produced a four-point haul with two second places from Lermoos Legend, whose late charge in the Andy Autin Happy 64th Birthday Handicap Chase failed to peg back Rebecca Menzies’ impressive topweight Return Ticket and Karavomylos, whose similar tactics were thwarted by Strike Of Lighting

Race Description This is a two miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. Horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

BATTLE OF TORO was a wide-margin winner on this card 12 months ago and with his Wetherby effort back in November easy to put a line through (lost his action), Jimmy Moffatt’s 7-y-o gets the verdict to double his tally in this sphere Elham Valley has hit the crossbar on his last couple of starts and he may have to settle for silver once again, with the selection’s stablemate Yukon rounding off the shortlist.

Clean Getaway hasn’t often convinced with his finishing effort but he’s a player down in grade nevertheless True Romance and Edinburgh Rock are others worth a look.

Race Description This is a two miles, one and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100.

Race Description This is a two miles and five furlongs handicap steeple chase for novice five-yearolds and upwards The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.
