CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE

The West to finish the day on eight points, three ahead of Jonathan England, whose two rides on the day were a winner and second. Just behind the leading pair are Jonathan Bewley and Brian Hughes. Bewley was a winner on Lights Are Green in the Black and Amber Handicap Chase before adding another point with Follow Your Arrow in the John Warner Tribute Handicap Chase
Ben Harvey made a flying start to the season at Cartmel on Saturday when he completed a near 10-1 double for trainer John McConnell on Moon
D’Orange and Go Another One to take an early lead in this season’s Cartmel Jockeys Challenge
Having his first rides at Cartmel since turning professional, Harvey also picked up a second place on Pearl Of

Champion Jockey Hughes is a serial winner of this title and took his points without a winner so once they start to flow, it seems likely that last season’s runner-up in the Challenge will prove very difficult to beat
In contrast, the opening day proved one to forget for Charlotte Jones as her four rides failed to produce so much as a placed horse, but no doubt better things lie ahead as the season

other runners, the Irish trainer has established a four-point lead over Sam England, whose two runners produced a win for the highly-impressive Alzaraqaan in the Gerald Emery Novices Handicap Chase and a close second for Emily Wade behind Jersey Lady in the Oakmere Homes Mares Handicap Hurdle, both ridden by her husband Jonathan
There is a new name at the top of the leader board after the first round of competition in this season’s Cartmel Trainers Challenge with Irish trainer John McConnell leading the way with a tidy nine points haul.
McConnell has been a familiar name around the Northern jumping circuit and his four-horse raid at Cartmel on Saturday netted two wins through Moon D’Orange in the opening Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding Maiden Hurdle and Go Another One in the Kendal’s Coming Up The Hill Handicap Chase.
With a second and a third place from his

George Bewley, who finished joint fifth in last season’s Challenge despite running only a handful of horses, is promising a stronger hand this time round and kicked off the Cartmel season with a winner through Lights Are Green in the Black & Amber Handicap Chase, one of two races to celebrate Kendal RUFC’s under-18’s winning the Lancashire Cup.
Local trainer James Moffatt, runaway winner of this competition in the last two seasons, had a muted start to the campaign Although most of his runners proved competitive, they were unable to keep it going with only Zumbi, who was fourth to Do No Wrong in the John Warner Tribute Handicap Chase making the frame.

Race Description This is a three miles and one and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE
Race Description This is a three miles and five and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for ten-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.
