WELCOME
Welcome to the return of our May Bank Holiday Monday – the whole extended team and myself are so grateful for your support today.
My particular thanks today to all of those Owners who have supported us by running their horses with us.
If I may, I would also like to take the opportunity to thank all of our Annual Members for joining us – your commitment from season to season is very welcome. I am grateful also when I hear that you act as ‘Cartmel Ambassadors’ when out and about on other racecourses. Of course, we are always looking to welcome new customers to our race days, but I would stress our Annual Guests are, and will remain, central to our business.
I always think it’s rather fun to look out over all of the activities on site, we are proud of the varied day out we offer here at Cartmel, but at the heart of what we do remains our programme of Summer Jumps races – it is a true privilege to continue this tradition at the grassroots of the sport.
We have some wonderful sponsors with us today – their much appreciated contribution goes directly to support our race programme through our Prize Money

The family of Tony Connell
The family of Alan Bolt
Andy Austin and his family
Today’s Charity is The Well – it gives us all a great sense of gratitude and pride to be able to help local organisations with their fundraising and I would urge you to visit their stand and learn more about the important work they do
You may notice today that we are joined by Steve Cram and his team, talking about their weekend event taking place at Holker Hall later this year It would be wonderful if some of you were able to join that event too, it is promising to be a weekend of competitive and fun sports with music and other entertainment at my Family home.
As you enjoy your day with us, feel free to ask a member of the Cartmel Team any questions you may have and they will give you their best attention
I hope we may see you again before this season is over

HADWINS MARES SERIES
Shropshire trainer Alastair Ralph’s first ever runner at Cartmel turned out to be a winner and put him in pole position for the £1,000 bonus prize attached to the Hadwins Mares Only Hurdle Series, sponsored annually by the Lindale-based Audi and Volkswagen dealership.
Having made his first visit a winning one, it remains to be seen whether Bridgnorth-based Ralph will be tempted to return and capitalise on the excellent start given him to him by Magical Maggie, who battled home from Irish raider Pearl Of The West in Saturday’s Hadwins EBF Mares Handicap Hurdle
Given an excellent ride by seven pounds claimer Jay Tidball, Magical Maggie came through strongly in the closing stages to pick off the long-time leader Pearl Of The West
and win with quite a bit in hand She will be a threat if returning for future races in the series.
Pearl Of The West puts Trainers Challenge leader John McConnell second in this table with last year’s bonus winner Donald McCain back in third after Merry Poppins, who had led early in the race took the minor honours from Blue Hawaii
It was an encouraging start for McCain, who took the £1,000 bonus despite not have saddled a single winner in the six rounds of last season’s Series. Instead, he collected points in every leg of the competition with his star performer being Simply Red, who finished runner-up in the final two rounds to seal the prize.

CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE
The West to finish the day on eight points, three ahead of Jonathan England, whose two rides on the day were a winner and second. Just behind the leading pair are Jonathan Bewley and Brian Hughes. Bewley was a winner on Lights Are Green in the Black and Amber Handicap Chase before adding another point with Follow Your Arrow in the John Warner Tribute Handicap Chase
Ben Harvey made a flying start to the season at Cartmel on Saturday when he completed a near 10-1 double for trainer John McConnell on Moon
D’Orange and Go Another One to take an early lead in this season’s Cartmel Jockeys Challenge
Having his first rides at Cartmel since turning professional, Harvey also picked up a second place on Pearl Of
Champion Jockey Hughes is a serial winner of this title and took his points without a winner so once they start to flow, it seems likely that last season’s runner-up in the Challenge will prove very difficult to beat
In contrast, the opening day proved one to forget for Charlotte Jones as her four rides failed to produce so much as a placed horse, but no doubt better things lie ahead as the season

other runners, the Irish trainer has established a four-point lead over Sam England, whose two runners produced a win for the highly-impressive Alzaraqaan in the Gerald Emery Novices Handicap Chase and a close second for Emily Wade behind Jersey Lady in the Oakmere Homes Mares Handicap Hurdle, both ridden by her husband Jonathan
There is a new name at the top of the leader board after the first round of competition in this season’s Cartmel Trainers Challenge with Irish trainer John McConnell leading the way with a tidy nine points haul.
McConnell has been a familiar name around the Northern jumping circuit and his four-horse raid at Cartmel on Saturday netted two wins through Moon D’Orange in the opening Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding Maiden Hurdle and Go Another One in the Kendal’s Coming Up The Hill Handicap Chase.
With a second and a third place from his
George Bewley, who finished joint fifth in last season’s Challenge despite running only a handful of horses, is promising a stronger hand this time round and kicked off the Cartmel season with a winner through Lights Are Green in the Black & Amber Handicap Chase, one of two races to celebrate Kendal RUFC’s under-18’s winning the Lancashire Cup.
Local trainer James Moffatt, runaway winner of this competition in the last two seasons, had a muted start to the campaign Although most of his runners proved competitive, they were unable to keep it going with only Zumbi, who was fourth to Do No Wrong in the John Warner Tribute Handicap Chase making the frame.

Race Description This is a three miles and one and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Race Description This is a three miles and five and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for ten-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

Race Description This is a two miles and one and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty
usually 7lb.

BETTING ADVICE - HOW TO BET
1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager.
2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, by naming the horse and horse’s number Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct the bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.
3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.
4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms, Place Betting, not all on-course bookmakers accept each way bets, i.e. for a win or place
5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the punter to his rights
6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes e.g. £1, £5 or £10, but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

Race Description This is a two miles and five furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Karavomylos looks a big threat following an improved display on his recent handicap debut, while it’s possible that Bells Express will also raise his game now making the switch to handicap company
