WELCOME
A warm welcome to you all, on the opening day of Cartmel’s 2023 season; and our sincere thanks once again for your loyal support.
Two events will remain in our memories since we last met in August 2022 On September 8th, after a glorious reign lasting seventy years, we received the sad news of Her late Majesty’s death Today especially, Her love of horses and British Horseracing will be gratefully remembered
More recently, the Nation and the Commonwealth celebrated the brilliant Coronation of our new King and we look forward to His Majesty and Queen Camilla continuing to support racing
With so much competition in this ever-changing world, all of us here at Cartmel appreciate your choosing us as a destination today.
It is wonderful to reflect on the performances of last season, with Jimmy Moffatt and Charlotte Jones reigning supreme in our Annual Cartmel Challenge
Thanks also must go to today’s sponsors – their support contributes directly to our race programme through Prize Money : Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding

Our Charity of the day is Cancer Care – there is an opportunity for you to learn more about their work by visiting them on their stand. It is our great privilege to support the fundraising efforts of a different Charity on each race day.
I do hope you will enjoy your day – if you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to make contact with a member of the Cartmel Team

JOCKEYS’ & TRAINERS CHALLENGES 2022
CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE
jockey who has proved time and time again what a talent she is by rattling off the winners on her local course
Charlotte Jones, the first female rider and the first conditional jockey to win the Cartmel Jockeys Challenge, confirmed her position as the Queen of Cartmel when she won the crown for a second time. It remains one of racing’s great mysteries why more trainers don’t make use of the Barrow-born
And don’t anyone try to say she has won by weight of numbers. Charlotte’s 47-point haul has come from just 32 rides, one more than champion jockey Brian Hughes has taken to amass his 30 points. After a quiet spell in the early part of the year, Hughes hit his stride with a vengeance adding 19 points to his score on the last three days of action at Cartmel, a run which took him into second place, but still too far behind, to make it an impossible task of overtaking Jones.

CARTMEL TRAINERS CHALLENGE
of second placed Donald McCain, himself a multiple winner of the Challenge.
Indeed, since its inception in 2012 only McCain and Moffatt have claimed the crown and there would be few people willing to bet that the 2023 competition, which gets underway today, doesn’t turn out to be another duel between these two Cartmel heavyweights
Following his record-breaking season in 2021, when he became the first trainer ever to saddle 12 winners at Cartmel in a season, James Moffatt was at it again last season as he successfully defended his Trainers Challenge title.
This time, he had a mere 11 winners, which is the second-best score ever recorded in a Cartmel season, as he romped to victory with a massive 52 points on the board, more than double the score
If the usual order of things is to be disrupted, Dianne Sayer may be the one to do it With 27 runners at the course in 2022, she was second only to Moffatt in terms of representation and with 20 points came in a highly creditable third. Others to note this year are Gary Hanmer, whose stable goes from strength to strength and who was fourth last year, Sam England, another whose star is rising and Peter Bowen, whose long distance raids from West Wales continue to prove extremely effective.

THE CARTMEL STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING MAIDEN HURDLE RACE
(CLASS 4) (GBB RACE)
for maiden four yrs old and upwards ¨ Total prize fund £9099 Owners Prize Money. 1st £3797, 2nd £1899, 3rd £949, 4th £475. (Penalty Value £4955.32)

Race Description The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles and six furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.
Race Stats Leading course trainer (17-22): J Moffatt (30 wins from 197 runners, 15%) runs CUZCO DU MATHAN
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): M Hammond (4 wins from 34 runners, 12%) runs BANNOCKBURN

PLAY SMARTER
This is likely to boil down to a straight fight between Irish raiders MOON D’ORANGE and Artiste d’Ainay. The latter hasn’t done much wrong since switched to hurdles and ought to pick up a race at some point, but he doesn’t appear to be progressing and Moon d’Orange is preferred having shaped with promise on his Rules debut at Leopardstown. Race Description This is a two miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race chase for four-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares only which have been rated from 0 to 135. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

HADWINS MARES SERIES
He didn’t saddle any of the winners in six rounds of last season’s Hadwins Mares
Only Hurdle Series, but Cheshire trainer
Donald McCain still walked away with the £1,000 bonus after collecting points in every race
And that could be a lesson for other trainers when this season’s race for the £1,000 bonus begins with today’s opening round. It’s always best to have winners, but, if not, consistently having runners is a strong second option
McCain owed his eventual success to
Simply Red, who collected 12 points in the final two rounds of the competition by finishing second to Redwood Queen in July and then taking the same spot behind impressive winner Bon Retour in the final round on August Baknk Holiday Saturday
The six points for Simply Red took McCain’s total to 26 points, eight ahead of Nicky Richards, who saddled Bon Retour and Mel Rowley, who shared second place. Irish trainer Noel Kelly had gone into the final round with a winning chance, but his runner Light Heidi’s third place meant he had to settle for fourth overall

Race Description This is a three mile and one and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

In Loving Memory of Gerald Emery
Marie Emery and family are sponsoring one of today’s races to make a very fitting tribute to the life of Gerald Emery, fondly known as Ged, who passed away age 76 on the 18th Feb 2023. Gerald and Marie first came to Cartmel races over 30 years ago and have been Hill & Stream members since 2005. They both fell in love with the atmosphere, the racing and have made many life-long friends. Always a fan of horse racing, Ged loved the sport with a passion with the highlight of each year being attending Cartmel, bringing everyone together to cheer on the horses they chose.
Ged’s infectious personality brought such excitement and enthusiasm to the races, where very fond memories have been created over many years. It is these memories that his friends and family hold close to their heart. Gerald would have loved to have sponsored a race at Cartmel, nevertheless, we know he will be watching down on us from above.

Race Description This is a two miles and one and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 95. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty

Race Description This is a two miles and five furlongs handicap hurdle race/steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110.

Race Description This is a three miles and one and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

On behalf of Kendal Rugby Club, and particularly the Senior Colt squad, we are grateful to be attending Cartmel Racecourse today and sponsoring two races, to celebrate not only what has been a remarkable season for our U18 squad but to mark the end of a tenyear rugby journey. The core of the current U18 Colts squad was formed when the players were just 8 years old, when Mini and Youth Rugby first started at Kendal RUFC back in 2013.
Their consistent hard work and dedication over the last 10 years has paid dividends and seen them win the U17 County Cup in 2022, the U18 Lancashire County Cup in 2023 and also finishing second in the 2022/2023 North West Halbro Conference League A.
It’s been a pleasure watching this group of players develop their skills and become strong, resilient rugby players over the last ten years. The friendships that have been made and the steps that the club has taken in providing future players for the senior teams has to be commended. It is their consistent hard work and dedication that is now paying dividends and the future of the club is looking very bright. We wish all the players well with their next steps, as they move on to university, apprenticeships, jobs and senior rugby. If we’ve done our jobs correctly, they’ll all still be playing rugby for some time to come!!
Thank you to our Sponsors this year Lowther Forestry Group, PSR Marquee Hire, Happy Hounds, No 16 The Salon, Frydays Fish and Chip Shop and Jewsons. Finally, thank you to Paul and Sarah Richardson for their help sponsoring our ‘day at the races’. We’re grateful to be here and are looking forward to the day!

PARIS DIXIE: Following its run on 15/11/2022 it was reported that the horse would appreciate quicker ground. ON WE GO: Following its run on 17/4/2023 it was reported that the horse suffered interference in running.
Probable S.P’s: 10-3 Mary Cassatt (FR), 4-1 Emily Wade (IRE), 9-2 Bright Sunbird (IRE), 11-2 Jersey Lady (FR), 7-1 Could Be Trouble (IRE), 12-1 On We Go (IRE) PLAY
The vote goes to COULD BE TROUBLE, who returned to form when fifth in a Class 2 Cheltenham handicap and this step back up in trip looks a good move. Bright Sunbird produced her best effort for a while when hitting the crossbar at Ludlow recently and she is feared most, albeit only marginally as a pretty strong case can also be made for Emily Wade
