A very warm welcome to the Fitzdares Cartmel Cup Day; many thanks indeed for your support.

I am particularly pleased that we are able to support the British Thoroughbred Retraining Centre as our Charity today; the work the Centre does in caring for horses is second-to-none and is so important to our industry I recommend a visit to the Paddock side to see their Stand today. May I reminder you that our Race Day Presenter, John Sexton, is Chairman of this remarkable organisation My thanks go to the Owners who have brought horses to Cartmel today. Owners who make money out of jump racing are rare indeed; they do it for the love of the sport; I for one, feel hugely grateful to them for the pleasure they give us. Our partners and sponsors also contribute to the success of our programme, and we extend our gratitude to them all; and especially today to Hadwins Group, Fitzdares and Molson Coors. Anthea Leigh is remembering her late father, Peter Beaumont, as many of us do with enduring affection Touchingly, once again, the Sadik family are remembering Cengiz Sadik.

As many of you know, another annual Cartmel tradition will be followed tomorrow, as we enjoy the Blessing of the Racehorse Service at the Cartmel Priory I know that our Racecourse Chaplin, Reverend Nick Devenish, looks forward to welcoming anyone wishing to attend I need hardly say we will be racing again on Monday; it is a well-loved fixture and I hope we will be able to see you again Thank you again for your support; the relaxed and good-natured crowd at Cartmel make for the joyful atmosphere we all enjoy

WELCOME

Brian Hughes was the big mover on the second day of the July meeting with his eight-point haul moving the champion jockey into third place in this season’s Cartmel Jockeys Challenge, but he needs to do even better over the August Bank Holiday fixtures if he is to reclaim his crown A multi-winner of the Jockeys’ Challenge in the past, he lost the title to Charlotte Jones last season and, as things stand, it seems more than likely that the Barrow-born rider will retain her title this time around. It may have been something of a surprise when she became the first female jockey and the first conditional to carry off the Challenge 12 months ago, but there is nothing surprising about her defence, as the queen of Cartmel has shown repeatedly how well she rides the track. Despite the Hughes’ move, Sean Quinlan collected five points to hold on to second place but, like Hughes, he needs six more winners to overhaul Charlotte’s current score and she is likely to add to her tally before the season ends on Monday

The front three have now opened up a big lead on the rest, though condition al Kevin Brogan, back in fourth place on 13 points, should be proud of his efforts at Cartmel this season He looks to be a star of the future

CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE

Mathematically Moffatt can still be caught, but in reality, he could put on his slippers and have his feet up as for nearest challenger Ben Haslam the simple truth is he needs to have eight winners and one other placed horse to overhaul Moffatt’s tally of 40 points. With 14 races left, that is a near impossible ask. Nor is Moffatt likely to rest on his laurels. He loves nothing better than winners on his local course and it looks a great deal more likely that he will increase his lead before the last race on Monday rather than have it cut!

With just 14 races to go until the end of Cartmel’s 2022 season, James Moffatt can already celebrate another runaway success in the Cartmel Trainers’ Challenge and the retention of the Andrea Robinson Memorial Trophy.

The real tussle is for runner-up spot Haslam has had a terrific season at Cartmel, amassing his 16 points from just 12 runners and he must keep it going to hold off third placed Gary Hanmer, who is just one point behind from his 14 runners at the track this summer. Just behind them both is perennial champion Donald McCain, who has had a quiet time by his own high standards, but it would be no great surprise if he were to finish strongly to grab second place.

When it comes to winning a racing series consistency is the key and that has certainly proved the case so far for Donald McCain in his pursuit of the £1,000 bonus attached to the Hadwins Mares Only Hurdle Series this season

The Cheshire trainer may not have had a winner in the series so far, but he has always had runners and they have all been thereabouts so that he has collected enough points to be leading the competition with just one round to go Simply Red was the latest points scorer for McCain as she came within less than 100 yards of winning round five only to be collared by Redwood Queen, whose trainer Noel Kelly is now within striking distance of the top McCain

This is a two miles and six furlongs handicap hurdle race chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Born on August 2nd 1934, Peter was brought up in Ripley near Harrogate by Father Alfie and Mother Vera, brother of Pat and the late John Beaumont. Having grown up as a child during wartime, he remembered his father’s beloved hunters being taken away to war, and the hardships that were felt throughout the land, and of course in the farming, hunting and point to point community in which they lived. The qualities of hard work, honesty, and a certain Yorkshire stoicism were learnt then, and were to mark Peter out throughout his lifetime.

Happy days in the Bramham Moor Pony Club, along with an impressive trophy haul at Ripley Show among many other shows and hunter trials were then inevitably followed by hunting and point to pointing. Horses such as Rastus and The White Horse were to provide some great wins for the father/son, trainer/jockey partnership, until a bad fall in his early twenties put an early end to Peters aspirations to be a top amateur jockey.

Peter Beaumont

However he had, by this time, met his sweetheart and soon to be wife, Margaret Rose Revill. They met through Knaresborough Young Farmers Club, and friends such as Willie and Frances Houseman, John and Judy Elliot, sister Pat and her late husband John, were just a few of the many friendships which lasted through their lifetimes.

August 2nd 1934 to March 30th 2020

In 1968, another wonderful friend, Miss Joyce Hey, who had been taught to ride by Alfie at Ripley, bought Foulrice Farm at Brandsby in 1968 and asked Peter and Margaret to move in as tenants.

Sadly, just 11 days into the first lockdown of the Covid19 pandemic, Gold Cup winning trainer and supporter of Cartmel, Peter Beaumont, passed away in his sleep aged 85years.

A small dairy farm was quickly established, with hunter liveries, point to pointers and young horses sent for Peters’ kind and sympathetic handling and expert horsemanship. Long hours and hard work by both Peter and Margaret, whilst bringing up their young family, paid off with increasing success in the Point to Point field, with Sporting Luck being the first of several star horses to put Peters name on the map. More boxes were built, and more horses arrived, until, at the behest of owners Josie Knowles and Judy Plummer, a trainers licence was taken out in 1986. Their homebred horse, JJHenry, was the first horse to make Peter’s name under NH rules winning 6 Novice ‘Chases and 11 Chases in total, including the 1991 John Hughes Memorial Trophy (now the Topham Trophy) at Aintree. He was ridden to all his victories by Peter’s daughter Anthea, the Clerk of the Course here at Cartmel. Peter soon became known for sourcing and training a wonderful stamp of staying chaser The best of these was the 1993 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Jodami, a horse who also won three successive Irish Gold Cups. There were winners of other illustrious races such as Young Kenny who won a Scottish Grand National, and Hussard Collonges who won the RSA Chase at Cheltenham for the Bannister family, along with lovely chasers such as Island Chief, Niki Dee, Bobby Grant, to name but a few, who placed Peters name on the role of honour for such as the Midlands Grand National, Tommy Whittle ‘Chase, Peter Marsh ‘Chase, Mandarin etc. With just a handful of select horses that he purchased astutely and brought along with a special brand of patience and kindness, he established himself in the top rung of NH trainers, and remains the last Northern trainer to have trained both a Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, and the winner of the RSA Peter was a farmer and trainer, stockman and horseman. He truly was the kindest of men, a gentleman in the true sense of the word. Decent, modest and mindful of others he was a wonderful father to Stuart and Anthea, and a fantastic Grandfather to Henry. He gathered friends everywhere he went, and had time for everyone. Sadly his genial smile and infectious twinkle is no longer with us, but the numerous happy tales of time spent with Peter ensures his legacy will last for many years to come.

Race Description Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October This particular two miles and five furlongs novices’ steeple chase is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two steeple chases.

Cartmel has become a place of pilgrimage for me with so many memories of the past and present I feel always welcomed here and thank Cartmel for keeping my son’s race going for so many years.

This year is the 15th anniversary of my son Cengiz’s passing. Cengiz was the king pin of my small family racing operation.

CENGIZ SADIK 22.2.70 – 25.6.06

As history will show Green Go won again on Monday by 25 lengths. I sponsored the race in his memory the year he died in 2006 I have had a runner in the race for the last 14 years and won it myself in 2008 with Desert Tommy, by 25 lengths amid floods of tears from myself and my wife. I hope to have a runner this year, all being well.

During 26 years of training in Ireland and England we had our share of winners. Cengiz loved Cartmel and rarely missed a meeting, usually coming over from our base in Worcestershire and staying overnight with our horses at the racecourse. Our most famous horse to win there was Green Go, which he purchased for me from the Czech Republic in 2002 I was dubious whether the horse being a maiden sprinter would stay 2 miles over hurdles, he assured me he would stay He brought Green Go to Cartmel for the bank holiday meeting in 2003 and won the 2 mile 5 Beginners Chase on Saturday by 25 lengths. Against my wishes, he twisted my arm to run him again on Monday in the 3 mile 2 Handicap Chase. I said to him “you are pushing your luck running him over a marathon distance” he said “not only will he stay the distance Dad, he will win!” So he stayed over and run Green Go on Monday. After a night out on Sunday night, Cengiz was found in Green Go’s stable feeding him by hand at 1am. He told his mystified friends that Green Go was off his food and he would not win unless he ate his food

Race Description This is a three miles and one furlong handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regular ly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty usually 7lb.

This two miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 110. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ usually a distinct disadvantage.
