WELCOME Welcome to the second day of Cartmel’s July Race Meeting, Jumping July Monday. My thanks for joining us today; your support of our race days is never taken for granted; my colleagues join me in wishing you a happy experience at Cartmel. If this is your first visit to the track, please do take some time to look around the site and I hope you feel some of our special magic. To all of the Owners who have supported us today by sending horses to run, thank you; we are very grateful of your continued support of our race programme. In these days of change for us all, please do not hesitate to share your feedback with us, it is important for us to know your thoughts. Our sponsors and partners remain a key part of our operation. Special thanks today to Weatherby’s, Bowness Bay Brewing Company, Champagne Louis Roederer and, of course, our regular partners, Molson Coors. Through their continued support, it has helped us to offer increased prize money leading to continued improvements in the quality of our race programme, which is something that we are very grateful for. Our charity today is ABF, The Soldiers Charity – I am sure that all of us understand the importance of supporting those who have put themselves in harm’s way to protect our nation and it is our pleasure to help them raise much-needed funds. For your diary, our final meeting of the 2022 Season takes place on Saturday 27th and Monday 29th August. Please enjoy your day with us and, if we can help at all, please do not hesitate to make contact with a member of the Cartmel team.

JOCKEYS’ & TRAINERS CHALLENGES 2022 CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE
Charlotte Jones Charlotte Jones may only have collected one point for riding Zumbi to finish third in the opener at Cartmel on Saturday, but she still finished the day with an even stronger lead in her bid to retain the Cartmel Jockeys Challenge title. With nearest challengers Sean Quinlan, Kevin Brogan and Brian Hughes all missing the meeting, even one point was likely to improve her lead and so it proved. A 16 points lead at this stage of the season is a massive buffer to have.
JOCKEY CHARLOTTE JONES SEAN QUINLAN KEVIN BROGAN BRIAN HUGHES JONATHAN BEWLEY WILLIAM SHANAHAN SEAN BOWEN JONATHAN ENGLAND JONJO O'NEILL JNR DEREK FOX DARYL JACOB RICHIE MCLERNON TABITHA WORSLEY CONOR O'FARRELL ADAM WEDGE
For once, Charlotte was overshadowed by another female jockey as Tabitha Worsley opened her Cartmel win account with a double on the day, being awarded the opening race on Bright Sunbird in the stewards room before bringing up the double with a strong ride on Glan Y Gors, who reversed recent form with Post No Bills in the McGuinness Feeds Handicap Chase. It was a good day for the ladies with amateur Izzie Marshall collecting a superb Cartier watch from Maxine Banks Lyon as her prize for winning the Banks Lyon Jewellers Female Jockeys Handicap Hurdle on Snookered for Malton trainer Brian Ellison. It was also a memorable day for Daryl Jacob, who had ridden at least one winner on every British jumps course except Cartmel. Two second places earlier this summer had been frustrating, but Jacob was clearly thrilled to complete the set when getting a great run out of Redwood Queen to pull back Simply Red in the home straight to win the Hadwins Mares Handicap Hurdle.

CARTMEL TRAINERS CHALLENGE
Your Odds Novices Hurdle as the seven-year-old had failed to peg back Donald McCain’s Kerosine Light only to be awarded the race in the stewards’ room. But then he was a shade unlucky with Dee Star, who finished like the proverbial train in the William Hill Racing Radio Handicap Chase but just failed to peg back Mah Mate Bob, who finally ended George Bewley’s bout of seconditis at Cartmel this season and took his trainer clear fourth. Mark Walford saddled only his second Cartmel winner on Saturday, but it was a big one as Johnson’s Blue made all the running to take the William Hill Cumbria Crystal Cup Handicap Hurdle.
James Moffatt
It was a disappointing day for James Moffatt on Saturday when his six runners at his local track produced a solitary third place, but that was still enough to leave him with a 19 points lead in the Cartmel Trainers Challenge. In contrast, Gary Hanmer had a good day with his two runners bringing him five points to slip into second place overall. There was a touch of fortune when Bright Sunbird collected the maximum three points in the opening William Hill Lengthen 3
HADWINS MARES SERIES
Donald McCain
When it comes to winning a racing series consistency is the key and that has certainly proved the case so far for Donald McCain in his pursuit of the £1,000 bonus attached to the Hadwins Mares Only Hurdle Series this season. The Cheshire trainer may not have had a winner in the series so far, but he has always had runners and they have all been thereabouts so that he TRAINER
has collected enough points to be leading the competition with just one round to go. Simply Red was the latest points scorer for McCain as she came within less than 100 yards of winning round five only to be collared by Redwood Queen, whose trainer Noel Kelly is now within striking distance of the top TOTAL

Race Description This three miles, one furlong, 83 yard hurdle race has been designed for four-yearolds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 120. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage. Race Description This two miles, one furlong, 46 yard hurdle race has been designed for four-yearolds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage. Leading course trainer (17-22): D McCain (23 wins from 139 runners, 17%) runs SIMPLY RED and ZAMOND Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): R Menzies (5 wins from 23 runners, 22%) runs CHECK MY PULSE Weightwatcher: CALLIOPE won off a handicap mark of 100, her rating is now down 18lb to 82. FI RST RAC E
Race Description This three miles, one furlong, 83 yard hurdle race has been designed for four-yearolds and upwards which are still novices. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.
