WELCOME A very warm welcome; how wonderful to see you all in this beautiful valley today; thank you for being with us. You help us to create such a special atmosphere at Cartmel and I wish you a very enjoyable and memorable afternoon. To all of the Owners, who continue to support our race programme, please accept our sincere thanks. If you have any suggestions or feedback on our programme, please do let us know; we are always interested to understand how we can improve what we do. Today is the annual William Hill day; William Hill are great supporters of horseracing and of Cartmel, and we thank them for their continued support of our track. A great favourite in our racing calendar is the Female Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle, which I am delighted to say, continues to be sponsored by Banks Lyon; this year the prize to the winning jockey is a Cartier watch, which has been generously gifted by Maxine Banks Lyon and her family Thank you also to McGuinness Feeds and their guests today – the continued support of Anthony McGuinness and his family business is warmly appreciated by us. We are also grateful for the continued generosity of Hadwins, as they continue their sponsorship season with us. Today marks our first DJ performance after racing, with Ricky Wilson appearing from 6pm. I do hope you stay and enjoy the event. We also welcome a new charity to the course today – Growing Well join us from their site just outside Kendal, please, if you can, take a moment to look at what they do for the local community. Please do make contact with any member of the Cartmel team if you have any suggestions or need help with anything at all.

JOCKEYS’ & TRAINERS CHALLENGES 2022 CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE
Charlotte Jones The remarkable Charlotte Jones may only have ridden the one winner at Cartmel’s Sunday meeting on June 26, but it was enough to send her into the second half of the campaign with a commanding lead in her bid to retain the Cartmel Jockeys Challenge. Charlotte was at her brilliant best on Rapid Flight as the gelding continued his remarkable progress by defying the welter burden on 12st 4lbs to win the Cumbria

Grand Handicap Chase. It was a third win from four starts at the track for the partnership this season, with them beaten a nose in the other. Charlotte has now ridden eight winners at Cartmel this season and with four meetings left is well on her way to beating the track record of 11 winners in a season which she managed last season to match Brian Hughes, who set the record in 2018. With Hughes away at Uttoxeter, Sean Quinlan took the opportunity to take second outright once again by collecting four points on the day including a win on Benito in the PSR Marquees Handicap Hurdle, but he will have to more than double the 15 points he has amassed this season to have any hope of challenging for the title. The same comment applies to conditional Kevin Brogan, who has shown his budding talent on several occasions from his 11 rides at the track this season and did so again when partnering Dr Sanderson to win the big prize of the day, the Oakmere Homes Handicap Chase. He now lies third on 13 points.

CARTMEL TRAINERS CHALLENGE The double took Haslam into second place in this season’s Cartmel Trainers’ Challenge, but the irrepressible James Moffatt impressed again with his seventh winner of the season through the improving Rapid Flight to put one hand firmly on the Andrea Robinson Trophy. Gary Hanmer held on to third place thanks to the two points from Dee Star, who chased home Rapid Flight in the Cumbria Grand Handicap Chase, while George Bewley joined a posse of trainers locked on eight points after recording his fourth second place from just five runners at the track this season. That dubious honour went to Hungry Tiger, who started the 7-2 favourite for the PSR Marquees Handicap Hurdle. He looked like being left behind running down to the last, but picked up brilliantly in the straight and rallied to great effect only to fail by a short head to peg back Barbara Butterworth’s 14-1 shot Benito. .
James Moffatt Ben Haslam had quite a day when he completed a Cartmel double at the meeting on June 26 to go with Jerrysback in the valuable Summer Plate at Uttoxeter and land a 934-1 across-the-card treble in less than an hour. At Cartmel, the Middleham trainer was on the mark with Brelan D’As, who followed up an impressive run at the May meeting with a win in the Molson Coors Handicap Chase and Dr Sanderson, who dismissed the trainer’s fears about the softening ground with an easy win in the featured Oakmere Homes Handicap Chase. 3
HADWINS MARES SERIES
Gordon Elliott Gordon Elliott became the fourth trainer to have a winner in the Hadwins Mares Series when Hophornbeam gave the rising star Jordan Gainford a winning boost on his first ever ride at Cartmel on Sunday, June 26. Race Description Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles, six furlong, 31 yard hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two steeple chases.

Race Description This is a two-miles and one-furlong 46 yard handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rivals. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. This race is also confined to female riders. Race Description This is a two miles, 6 furlong and 31 yards handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 120 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 115. Race Description This two miles, one furlong, 61 yard steeple chase has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage. TIMEFORM VIEW Hasn’t looked the force she was last year but her mark reflects that and she arrives having gone with more zest when 5.5 lengths third of 10 over C&D 3 weeks ago (Redwood Queen second). PLAY SMARTER
Plenty arrive with claims in the finale and it may just pay to side with recent Stratford maiden scorer FIRE LAKE. Milton Harris’ mare was value for extra over the bare result on that occasion and, now handicapping, it would come as no surprise to see her firmly in the mix once more. 4-y-o Simply Red similarly arrives in good heart and is feared, along with Redwood Queen.
