WELCOME A warm welcome to all of you joining us for our much-awaited afternoon of summer jumps races, followed by a live concert with David Gray. I know that some of you have travelled a great distance today to see David and his band, for which very many thanks. Sincere thanks to all of our Owners today – without whom, it should hardly need saying, there would not be horseracing at Cartmel. I am looking forward to some competitive racing this afternoon; it is so gratifying to welcome Owners and Trainers from all over the country. Our sponsors and partners are so important to us, and we thank all of our partners for their on-going support – Hadwins, Oakmere Homes, Molson Coors, Banks Lyon and William Hill. We are always proud to be able to offer an opportunity to local Cumbrian charitable organisations, in order that they may be able to promote their cause and raise much-needed funds. Today we welcome the Cumbria Community Foundation – let them speak for themselves. “It will be a wonderful opportunity to engage with thousands of racegoers at a really special event, for them to learn more about our work. We will be fundraising for the Cumbria Fund on the day, which provides grants to around 50 community projects each year and helps a wide range of people, including youngsters, vulnerable adults, the disabled, those recovering from illness, the unemployed and low-income families”. Please do enjoy your day with us. Thank you once again for your support; if you need help during your time with us, please do not hesitate to make contact with a member of the team.

Lord Cavendish, Chairman Cartmel Steeplechases (Holker) Ltd

JOCKEYS’ & TRAINERS CHALLENGES 2022 CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE

Charlotte Jones After her opening day treble, Barrow-born conditional jockey Charlotte Jones was at it again on day three of the late May meeting with another tremendous three-timer to cement her lead at the top of the Jockeys’ Challenge table. But despite her successes on Jelski in the Remembering Nicholas Hooton Handicap Hurdle, Battle Of Toro in the Burlington Stone Novices Hurdle and Vocal Duke in the

Campbell & Rowley Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle, she might be wondering how a four-timer slipped away. Rapid Flight, who was bidding to follow up his win from the Saturday in the Lakes Luxury Loos Novices Limited Handicap Chase, looked all over the winner when taking the lead on the run in, but Derek Fox conjured a great run out of 33-1 shot All About Joe to win by a nose. Sean Quinlan had a second and a third from his three rides to maintain his prominent position in second place, but his 11 points are exactly half the score of the leader, so he still has to find a few winners to start closing the gap. Another conditional jockey Kevin Brogan lies third with eight points to his name ahead of Jonathan Bewley, Richie McLernon and Adam Wedge. Wedge is a rare visitor to Cartmel, but has a 100% strike rate with two winners from two rides this season, so would be a real threat with more rides. Multiple Jockeys’ Challenge winner Brian Hughes is some way off the pace on five points.

CARTMEL TRAINERS CHALLENGE To underline the point, Moffatt has already got three times as many points as his nearest pursuers Gary Hanmer and Laura Morgan and 16 points in the Trainers Challenge equates to five winners and a third place finish – a massive gap at this stage. Hanmer moved into joint second place courtesy of Malina Ocarina taking second place in the Campbell & Rowley Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle, but even then the mare was playing second fiddle to another Moffatt winner Vocal Duke. George Bewley, who has been unfortunate enough to have a second place with each of his three runners at Cartmel so far this season, shares fourth place with Ben Haslam, just ahead of Gillian Boanas, Peter Bowen and Simon Waugh.

James Moffatt With one third of Cartmel’s 2022 season completed, local trainer James Moffatt is already looking to be close to an unassailable lead as he bids to retain the Andrea Robinson Trophy and win another Cartmel Trainers’ Challenge. After a first day treble, Moffatt repeated the feat on the third and final day of the late May meeting and has already amassed 24 points, a score which has been good enough to take the title on occasions in the past. 3

BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE

Race Description This is a two miles, six furlong, 31 yard handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards who have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rivals. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. Race Stats:

Race Description The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles, six furlong, 31 yard race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today. Race Description This two miles, five furlong, 34 yard steeple chase has been designed for five year olds and upwards who are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage. Race Stats:

Race Description This is a two miles, 1 furlong and 46 yard handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards who have been rated from 0 to 110. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 110 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 105. Race Stats:

PLAY SMARTER

BATTLE OF TORO didn’t beat much when scoring by a wide margin over C&D earlier in the month, but his Flat form provides hope for better still, so he’s fancied to defy a penalty. Ted Hastings was unsuited by how the race developed at Kelso last time and retains potential.
